Im inexperienced with the gimp and have only touched photo shop like twice in my life. So how much better is photo shop then the gimp if at all?

PS Also inkscape compared to illustrator/photo shop?

On the splash screen there is (clearly) printed the word "the" in front of the word gimp, I have also seen some references to THE gimp around the web. Also what dose gimp stand for?

Photoshop is infinitely better than GIMP, in my opinion. The interface is so much better and although it can be difficult to use at first, it offers almost unlimited options for any kind of image work possible in a way that a free program can never emulate. For someone who is serious about managing images I would highly recommend getting PS, but if you're just goofing around and doctoring photos, GIMP should be sufficient.

GIMP is free and I use it at work, where the IS department won't pay for graphics programs without a major budgetary hassle.
Adobe photoshop can do more than GIMP , but it's bloatware , IMO.
I prefer Micrografx picture publisher as a streamlined , extremely fast, and intuitive graphics program.
All of the before mentioned programs have a decent learning curve ahead of user proficiency.
Depending on your needs, GIMP probably will allow you to edit photos as well as you need.
