the nitrous is bubbled through the lye solution, carbon filter and distilled water in order to remove those impurities. the only real danger here is the ammonium nitrate, but by refluxing it in hcl INSTEAD of just heating it up and waiting for it to decompose, the risk of explosion is decreased dramatically.
