from what i understand and from what my friend said who is VERY experienced with pot (been smoking daily for like 6 years LOL) what happens is that when you cough with smoke in you, the THC crystals put microscoptic cuts in the back of your throat, making the THC absorb into youre blood stream much faster and better.

Coughing fits decrease blood flow to the brain, compounding the mild hypotension already induced by cannabis. So yeah, it will increased the head rush, but only for a moment. I've seen no evidence that coughing would have an appreciable effect on the overall high.

I don't think it's true. Probably just a little light headedness (?) from a coughing fit.

But I've heard enough people talk about it and it pisses me off.

I feel like this could have some truth to it. Thc can absorb through open pores (exp: Try smoking by holding the hits in your mouth, you will notice a slight high.) Though this doesnt mean you should cough your balls off just get get a little more high, the amount absorbed would be very minimal and would have little to no effect on someone who is already stoned.

The more you cough, the thicker the smoke. So I guess you can make a crappy guess on how potent your bud is based on how much you cough, as higher THC levels might make you cough more.

The guy is new and so far I haven't seen him making a bunch of threads with noob type questions. I haven't seen him make threads that, while not noob questions and actually have some thought put into them, are still none the less pointless questions for the most part and so are still troll threads . In other words I have seen nothing to indicate that the OP is anything but what hew says at this point.

i think on reason the coughing myth gets around is because when you are first starting to smoke, coughing is a sign of actually inhaling and getting a lungful of smoke.

but having crystals cut mircotares in you throat sounds soo much cooler when you tell people.

Actually, I think it has more to do with the fact that heavy coughing can cause one to hyperventilate, thus causing a rush which a noob can mistake for a pot high.

If you cough when you still have the smoke inside your lungs, you will have a coughing fit; if you have asthma or similair breathing problems you could choke.

if your just starting to smoke and you cough its a good sighn and means you are in fact inhaling but if you have been smoking for a while you shouldn't cough at unless you try to or your laughing or something scares the piss out of you

when u smoke u try not to cough so u can hold in the smoke for longer. if anything, coughing would reduce your high:)
