Lying about bartending experience
Since it seems it's impossible to get a bartending job without experience, I think I'm going to lie about it.
The plan is to claim I worked for 2 months in a European bar (I've lived there, just didn't work in a bar). Beer is what was mainly served there, so that should give me leeway with being inexperienced with serving liquor. And any other things, I can just chalk up to being cultural differences.
What do you guys think? Also, what are some things that one would expect a guy with bartending experience to know/do? I took a 30-hour course, so I'm not completely inexperienced, but...alas, I haven't ever been behind a real bar taking orders.

Do it, its not like its a job that matters anyway, right? Make sure you do your homework though.

Re: Lying about bartending experience
Just go to a dive bar or a little sports bar, their standards aren't that high anyway. Experience only starts to really matter once you break into high volume night clubs or restaurants. That's when they start checking your references. They do HAVE beer/wine bars that are good for starting off. You wouldn't want to lie about working in a beer only bar then flooding the new bar with the tap because you don't know how to work it properly.
Oh, an everyone either lies to get their first gig, or knows someone. The entire business is run through these two notions.

Re: Lying about bartending experience
I worked in bar industry for years and I know it's a white mans job.
So that's you out.
Only messin', man just lie. They won't check your references. If you have any clue how to pull a beer you're grand (suprisingly, alot of people don't. I've trained in some fucking retards in my time). Shit, I miss bar work. The anti-social hours. The full-time alcoholism. Lol.

Re: Lying about bartending experience
I did the same for a coffee shop job, told them I'd worked in a bar in Italy.
It kind of backfired though, the coffee machines they had were different from those we have in Italy, which although I never used I've seen people use them throughout the years so I coud have probably worked my way around them.
Anyway I quit after 3 days, I only lasted that long because the other employees were cool and covered for my inexperience showing me how to do stuff and making things that I was supposed to be doing.
I really had no choice but to quit after the manager saw I wasn't able to make a cappuccino, an "experienced" Italian barista who can't make a cappuccino doesn't really make too much sense now does it?

Yeah in Italy coffee and cappuccinos are usually served in small cups, as in really small cups, here in the uk they drink everything by the pint and only if it's watered down, same thing with lager.

Re: Lying about bartending experience
to the OP, if you are gonna claim you worked in a beer-only bar, get really acquainted with a lot of different varieties of beer. There's books all over about that sort of thing, that way you'll seem educated about tasty beers and might even be able to whip out a random fact for your employer that would give ya a little credibility.

Re: Lying about bartending experience
theres a trick to it. get a job at a shit bar, pretend to have experience. hang around for a while then quit. apply for a job at a nice bar, using the first bar as a reference.
if they won't give you a ref, at least you have real experience so you won't get caught out on the first day.
people do it all the time, especially in IT.
