Well, mastering distributions based on the linux kernel (fuck you, prome.) takes into consideration programming and understanding the linux kernel. That's a deeper level than usual, and that requires a serious interest in computer science. If you wish to better understand some essentials, then take up shell scripting and network administration. Those are some basic things.
There are a lot of topics that revolve around distros, such as x.org and xfree86. I think if you want to better control various OSs, then that's what you would do. You would study the similar things that are found in each of those operating systems.
I mean, just do Linux From Scratch if you're serious about shit.
