turns out, its just uber high proof alcohol concentrate, usually blended with water or liquers. and the special ingredient is thujone, which actually has no effect, bc by the time you have imbibed enough to feel effects you are like 8x dead from alc. poisoning. repopularized in france and elsewherre in europe, with each nation having different legal requisites for wormwood concentrates etc.

there are some really great paintings with the subject of absinthe, as a side note.
