In the past few weeks we've lost a lot of moderators. Instead of making 5+ threads for discussion on each one of these forums, why don't we do it all here.

First things first, these are all of the people who have told me that have quit or would like to be removed from one or more forums:

Kelsokid18 - announced resignation on IRC (#mods)
kAtE- - mentioned that she would like to be removed from all forums but Art and Design (Moving Pictures, SG, and Noah's Ark - speaking of which, how'd you get 4 forums in the first place?).
lifejunkie - quit just the other day
robinhoody - quit the other week
yoyobeck - quit just before robinhoody
panthrax - nobody has been able to get ahold of him to figure out whether or not he can stick around - I'm starting to think not.
Jackketch - wants to be removed from Cunning Linguists

This leaves a lot of vacancies. These include:
Radio Free Amerika - Has 0 mods - needs 1 more
Moving Pictures - Has 2 mods - needs 3 or is it ok?
Noah's Ark - Has 1 mod - needs 2 or is it ok? iSoap seems to be doing ok
T&T and it's subforums Hello World and Cellular Mods - Has 1 mod - needs at least 1 more
BLTC - has 3 mods - might not need another
S&A - has 4 - probably won't need another
Oral Indulgences - has 1 - jack, does it need another?
Cunning Linguists - has 0 - needs at least 1

I think that's all.

If any of the mods who wanted to be removed from a forum have had second thoughts, I'll take you and the forum off the list.

I would like to say one thing up front: I would really like to get some new faces on the moderation staff. We have 55 (or 54) moderators and 56 forums (discounting the above people) - when we removed mlor we had 92 moderators and fewer than 50 forums. As you can see, we're stretched thinner than normal. We're at a ratio of one moderator per forum. We seriously need outside help - we can't just keep modding people who are already moderators. With that said, when I say "admin approval" in the following paragraph, that may involve your candidate being denied because he/she is already a mod.

Normally when someone leaves I let the moderator who's leaving and the remaining mods (if there are any) choose who will be replacing them. If the admins have no problem with it then the person will be added. In the event that all of the suggested users are denied by the admins OR the remaining moderators can not come up with a good replacement OR there are no remaining mods and the leaving mod suggested nobody, we'll talk and/or vote on it here. If still nobody can be chosen we'll just make a poll in the forum.

If the remaining moderators and leaving moderator are ok with doing a forum poll right off the bat, that's also fine - but it will still have to go through admin approval.

I reckon S&A is just fine as it is. I think it looks like there are alot of vacancies, but there doesn't appear to be, when you read it.

Agreed about some new people though. Regulars from those forums (assuming they're okay to be modded) would probably love a spot looking after their favourite place on totse. That's how I feel anyway.

12 months ago we had approx 90 mods and 9,500 active users (maybe slightly more) or roughly 1 mod per 106 users. Today we have 55 mods per 4353 active users, or 1 mod per 83 users. I think it's safe to say that the regular userbase has decreased at a greater rate than the mod population, which, I assume, means the average workload per mod is actually less than it was 12 months ago. Then again the relevance of these numbers is entirely dependent on what you think consitutes "normal".

But weren't there complaints whilst TS and Sambob where still here that we had an excessive number of mods, and a cull ensued shortly thereafter? At that point, or at any other time during the last 12 months, the mod/reg ratio would have been higher than it is today.

We've also had an explosion of new forums without much time to acclimate the userbase or staff to such changes. I'm not saying there hasn't been acclimation, I'm just saying there wasn't much time for it.

And what forum you're talking about. One mod per forum is not bad if all forums were like Hello World - but when you consider forums like SG or S&A...

Either way, Jeff never planned to keep registration closed so I don't think we should make decisions for the forum under the assumption that registration will remain closed.

I don't think we need a significant number of new mods. The traffic around this place has come to a screaming halt. Basically what SotB said. Good stuff.

As I was gonna ask on IRC...

Can I swap GP/CT for T&T? Then find someone new for GP/CT?

If nobody has any objections, that is.

Finally, after all these years of waiting they're going to be mine, MINE!!

Well if Deus is OK for T&T, S&G gets properly rota'd, S&A and BLTC have highly active and competent mods like Jack and Meta, then unless somebody actually says they need help or a forum is clearly going to shit, I'm just surprised at the possible need for the positive discrimination of a "lot" of new faces.

Neither do I, given that no-one knows what the future holds I'm simply commenting on the current situation.

I thought we had the BLTC issue solved. I had talked to you and Acid and you both were ok with not adding anymore Mods to BLTC - whether or not Panny leaves or not.

Though a very active forum, BLTC is not hard to to moderate. It was originally a 2 Mod forum anyway.


But that aside I thought you [Zok] had been ok with reinstating Thetareactor. When he left it was with the understanding that it was only until he got his life together again and he asked me the other day if he could be reinstated. I do not mind adding him back since it was supposed to be a leave of absence only anyway. Otherwise I would still be going with just having the two of us - and Panny if he sticks around.



Also, neither Social Junker nor I can think of any users who stand out as Mod material, which is kinda sad actually.

Moving Pictures definitely needs another mod, I just haven't found any suitable posters yet.

Just throwing this out there -- Meta, I know you are effectively the only active mod of BLTC, and that is working fine, but if you ever need help, I'd be more than happy to help out. I don't post there much... but.. you know I used to be a great poster there .

I second Eudas suggestion of Fza for some sort of moderating position, he's great. Perhaps for CL? I know he speaks at least two or three languages and has a sufficient knowledge of linguistics.

I'd be willing to fill a spot if needed. I'd like to stay around the technical part of the forum, but I can do any where else if needed. Even just as a temp.

I suggest Gus for moderating the new Chocolate subsubforum of Flesh Art.

I think warweed and I go to RFA more than other mods -- maybe we should look among the regulars to see if anyone stands out? Offhand, I'd say Halvy101 if he was more active, but then again... We all know Halvy.

I really don't have many suggestions for moderation, I simply haven't been around enough recently. However, a few quick searches in the necessary forums can bring up quality names.

That was a jab about him being considered, umm, crazy by some people. Mostly this is because he posted Jewish Mafia conspiracy theories in RFA in response to people's questions, and in new threads all their own.

To think: He and MLoR modded the same forum. I wonder if it's RFA that makes people go insane?

SG = favour.
MP = I replaced Sambob in there quite some time before he was demodded.
NA = my idea, I was intended as a babysitter and I ended up being kept on. If you are to replace me in there, I recommend SHARP.


It's not that I'm not around, I just don't contribute like a mod should to those 3 forums. I can think of better places I'd be useful.

Two would be enough but I don't think Mandy visit it that often, at least I don't see him post there regularly.
