Default My one and only problem with linux.

Its so damn disorganized. There is no real separation between OS and add-on. This can lead to functionality overlapping problems sometimes and certain compatibility (or even stability) issues.

Otherwise linux is great. My list of problems with windows is WAY longer.

Cool Re: My one and only problem with linux.

I actually agree with this. And for this reason, a lot of people manipulate /etc/fstab and organize certain filesystem folders into their own HDD partitions.

/dev/hda1 /
/dev/hda2 /home
/dev/hda5 /var
/dev/hda6 /usr
/dev/hda7 /tmp

I think the best thing to do is have /var on a seperate partition and a backup stable OS on /dev/hda8 that can use the packages in /var incase things to to hell in /dev/hda1. That works pretty well. But I do think using clonezilla to backup/restore /dev/hda1 from/to /dev/hda8 is a much better idea.

Once the filesystem is understood, all those things make sense. But yeah, I still think the /etc folder is disorganized.

Linux is just a kernel. It has no knowledge of filesystem hierarchies or programs or anything like that. What are you talking about?

However, I'd like to say that if you're using a good Gnu distribution with a decent package manager, you'll always be fine. You will never know better than the package manager. If you're trying to install programs the Windows way you're doing it wrong.

When I say Linux, then I mean Linux OS. I'm sure people that are educated enough can tell the difference. There is no real need to state it, is there? Enthymatic language at best.

What Linux OS? There isn't any such thing as a Linux OS. The Linux project puts out a kernel, which is hardly an OS.

There is an OS, Gnu, that is about ten years older than the Linux project. It frequently uses the Linux kernel. But that doesn't make the OS Linux any more than OS X using the Darwin kernel makes OS X Darwin.

If that's your only problem using a linux based system, you're obviously technologically illiterate.

Your argument still makes no fucking sense. At its most BASIC level an operating system's primary function is to manage task(s). N-O-N-E, NONE of the GNU utilities do this. 90% of the binutils and coreutils are just POSIX required abstractions for lower level filesystem functionality that is implemented in the kernel itself. And anyone who says a compiler and glibc are essential parts to an operating system, doesn't know what the fuck they're talking about. Hardware support, VFS, virtual memory, sockets, all the things that MAKE AN OPERATING SYSTEM WORK are implemented in the kernel.
