Default racemization

So I was reading around on the internet and came across a tidbit that said the combination of heat and pressure on a solution of L-phenylalanine would, after a short period of time produce a solution of DL-Phenylalanine. Someone then suggested that a similar procedure might be possible on L-meth, which, as most of us know, is purchasable at you local drugstore location and completely unrestricted. Now, I can't imagine that with all the more-than-capable clandestine chemists around that no one would have figured it out if it were possible, but I can't help but wonder.

So, can it be done?

No one has taken the time to do an experiment.

You know the procedure. So why not try it and let us all know?

Though I have the means, I have not the knowledge to properly perform the experiment or test the final product. Thus, I released the idea to totse.

Scanned and uploaded Three pages from Fester's new 2nd edition of "Advanced Techniques" for you. This details the step-by-step procedure of converting L-Phenylalanine into D,L-Phenylalanine. Simply replace L-Phenylalanine with L-Meth.

Once complete, testing should be self-explanatory.

You now have the means, and the knowledge.

This is a bummer but I'm running on a shitty old mac, so the file isn't opening. I'm currently looking into another means of acquiring a copy of the literature.

Wow nope you are the 1st to think that!!! And MA has been around for lotsa years.
So hows it work? buy a bunch of inhalers and extract the l-meth and then just change it to D-meth
Sounds easy too. post how to change it mmmmmkay.

The first time I heard anyone say "change L meth to D meth" was from Fester. I think it's bullshit.

But experimentation is always nice to see. . . Even if it is a complete and total waste.

Your sarcasm is understood, but my viewpoint on it was that it's possible some well-(self)educated person figured out how to do it, but neglected to mention it to the rest of us for the obvious reason. That does seem the smart thing to do with the information at hand.

I concur.

man so it just gets dumber and dumber. No one ever said u can go from l-meth to d-meth.

What the original poster said is that l-phenylalanine can be turned into D- AND L- PHENYLALANINE.

I doubt that any of u will ever succeed, but the PROPOSAL is to turn l-meth into a mixture of d- and l-meth. Not pure d-meth which is made from D-pseudoephedrine.

I'm confused. Are you saying I'm dumb or someone else who posted? If your referring to me, I never said I was trying to convert pure l-meth to pure d-meth. What I was hoping to accomplish was to create a racemate, as is done with phenylalanine.

Going from one isomer to a racemate is different than an outright conversion of one to the other. I'm still learning organic chem, but just from what I've read so far, certain isomers actually swing back and for at room temperature, to the extent that at stp, they cannot be resolved. What I was wondering is whether l-meth at elevate t & p would racemize.

Well... enantio-resolution. then re-racemisation ad infintum, might get you somewhere close... ;)

Not pure d-meth which is made from D-pseudoephedrine.

..or you could make it via a million other pathways, should you be that way inclined...

I just did a price check on L-meth. It comes up at $80/gram. So, basically, whether or not it can be done is basically irrelevant at this point.

Why's that?

A couple of posts back you were saying how wonderful pure scientific enquiry is...

Or were you just agreeing for the sake of it...?! ;)

Lmeth is 80 a g?? haha that is EXACTLY the price of dmeth around here!

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm unbelievably lazy. I do like to do stuff just for science, but without monetary incentive someone else'll just have to do it.

But you never know...

Lmeth is 80 a g?? haha that is EXACTLY the price of dmeth around here

So if there's nothing else around and you don't mind L-meth in your D-meth, then maybe here's your fix.
