ADD Meds + The Army
I noticed anyone who's ever been prescribed ritalin or other ADD meds is automatically disqualified from joining the army. I wonder why. Do they just not want people who have ADD or is it about the drugs themselves?

Re: ADD Meds + The Army
Maybe they don't want unstable/reckless soldiers in combat.

Re: ADD Meds + The Army
I would certainly think that it is the risk entailed with combining a mentally unwell person and firearms or at least the means to cause harm.
(Amphetamine inspired rant) If they did accept people that had been prescribed ADD drugs, then that person could have a tenancy to violent behavior, yes? I'm pretty sure that people that are ADD can be prone to violent behavior, or at least irrational when off of medication. And if they stayed on medication throughout boot-camp/military career, they could for one be disqualified from boot-camp for the possible performance enhancing properties of their medications. Also, their prescription would be more readily available to fellow recruits, although that shouldn't pose any additional threat because im sure if one had enough drive, they could get what they wanted.
I know people with ADD though that are now off medication and have their...um... "disability?" under control. The military wont look through this though, because it would be solved in the form of a waiver written by the applicant stating that they have "gotten better". This wouldn't be acceptable, because anyone could write it. If their was some sort of test? I'm not sure though.
So i guess that your parents screwed you over by allowing you to be put on those medications before your will was intact. But if the applicant was on the medications as an adolescent, couldn't a waiver be created stating that you haven't had any trouble with the disorder since childhood? I did this while applying for the Air Force. It was about Asthma. I had attacks as a child but not a shred of it since then. I'm thinking that the consultation of a professional in this area should be considered. Talk to a recruiter about this specific detail (having it as a child). They might give you some BS though just to get you in their office. Different branches may have separate set rules about this. I know for a fact that many rules can be bent in this kind of case.
I had an MIP of marijuana under one ounce in Oregon. this is decriminalized, and since the incident was so close to the date of applying to the Air Force (less than 6 months) I was on the phone with some commanding General or something explaining my situation and why I did it in the first place. It got passed and waived but then I screwed up my knee, so I'm held over a little bit :) Won't go into that though. \
Sorry for the rant, hope some of it is useful though :/
The Stevie Wonder version of Redemption Song by Bob Marley is spectacular by the way. It was like a wave of euphoria to randomly hear a new version of it while on speed. Good stuff. Good times.

Re: ADD Meds + The Army
I don't think thats the real reason hitalus because the ideal soldier is a violent psychopath. Then again they need to be somewhat sane so they don't do crazy shit like blowing up civilians with grenades and friendly firing.
Its a boot camp not the olympics. Its not a competition why would having enhanced abilities be a problem? I read that if someone has ever been prescribed ritalin they're disqualified. I don't think they care if the doctor deems you cured.

They need soldiers who can focus on orders not soldiers who wander off and play with grenades

:) for sure hugh?
yea, but if it was an adolescent thing, for which many mistakes in prognosis have been made, their might be some loophole somewhere a recruiter would try and get you through.

Maybe, I'm not an expert on the military or anything so I wouldn't know.
But think about it if you have ADD and youre ordered by your doc to take medication how are you going to get your meds out in the middle of an afghani dessert?. What if they fall out of your pocket? They want soldiers without any mental illness's, they want soldiers who depend on their weapon not on their medication.

Haha, in a draft, I don't think they would care. They just want as many men as possible.

It is simply because you cannot join if you require daily medication. We do have a military forum you know?

Someone dependent on them to be normal is more of a liability than giving whoever's on nightwatch or whatever them to enhance their capabilities.

You can not have the add meds while in basic and AIT but after that you can have them. I am a soldier currently taking Adderall and they dont give a fuck.
