Stay at home wives
Do guys really like it if a woman is only a pretty little housewife?
I mean like, she is beautiful, really sweet, perfectly dressed, a dynamic cook, a good maid, etc etc, but she doesn't have an actual career.
Be completely honest: is that attractive- every man's dream? Or do guys prefer for a woman to have a job?

I'm pretty old fashioned and I don't believe a woman should have to work, but now-a-days women want to pretend like they're important and independent

To put this as crudely and bluntly as possible... the natural reaction to a professional chef, a maid, and a prostitute on the housekeeping staff for no price higher than occasional couchsurfing rights...
...is to buy more couches.
"Every man's dream?" Not quite. Lots of men want a meaningful, life-transforming relationship... but if you gave someone the option of a meangful relationship on the side coupled with a basement packed with a harem of personal prostitutes, chefs, maids, and housekeeping wenches for free... you might start to have a dream.
'cause, hey.... free hooker. And a maid. 'n you get to ditch them to have something meaningful on the side too, then come back and nail your cellar of hizzoes in an immaculately-kept house before being served a twelve-course dinner by a harem of fine wenches. All for a little space on the couch. What's not to love??
'n if the damn hooker gets pregnant, she does the work to take care of her own damn problem for the next 20 years.
Yeah, the appeal is visible. I'd like to loosen society to where there were other options on the same deal, alongside competing affairs (like, oh, I dunno, meaningful interpersonal bond et al), but... yeah. It's obvious what one sees in it. Free hooker, free servant, no burdens - let the bitch take care of any kids the bitch squats out, so I don't have to.
I wouldn't make it my life, but it's got a crude, simplistic appeal to it.

Re: Stay at home wives
I'm old fashioned. Wives stay at home and are mothers. Hell my wife didn't even have her own bank account for years.
That said, its almost impossible these days for a non-professional man to earn enough to feed a family. Often the wife has to work as well just to pay the bills.
But yeah, I bring home the bacon and I cook it. The wife gets to wash up after (but I bought her a dishwasher!).

Re: Stay at home wives
I've always been a housewife/stay at home mom since I was married over 10 years ago. My husband is fine with it...In fact I suggested getting a part time job when my daughter went to school, but he said he didn't want me to. I think it's a lot more convenient having one person work and the other person take care of the house and bills. At least we don't fight over chores and stuff.:P
The only bad part is that ever since we moved off base I'm the only woman home during the day in my neighborhood! I used to walk around visiting my friends, but now I don't have any because all of the women work during the day. When did this happen?!

Personally would prefer it if she worked doing something she chooses to do, not due to financial need, which is why I would probably end up with a lady in academia.

Re: Stay at home wives
I'd cook, clean and lie ready and naked in bed for any guy who wanted those marriage roles. That'd be sweet.
Or maybe that's just the asian in me talking. I really don't see the issue with letting him pay the bills while I spend 6 hours making a pot roast and tending to the kids, but try finding a guy who's happy with that. Nearly every family these days has both parents working, even when they don't need to be. That's just stressful, and definately no way to enjoy your home and your achievements.

What the fuck is this guy on about? Can someone dicypher his post for me please? I don't understand what the hell he was trying to convey.
Advice to you dude: say what's on your mind and be direct and straightforward about it. That way people might have a chance of understanding you.

Re: Stay at home wives
No fucking way
Personally I like my women (wife) to work. I can make my own dinner, what I really want is fuck-you money. My goal by the time I'm 50 I want to have enough to go up to the chief pilot at the airline and tell him "Fuck you" I quit.
I've seen stay at home wives at Target during my days off, and I'm not impressed. Having the whelp in the cart, spending hours looking at the back of cat food. Get out of the way so I can get my stuff and go home. Plus I have a hard time respecting the attitude of self-importance. If I were to stay at home (a guy), everyone of you would tell me I'm a lazy slacker and get a job. Yet no one is saying that to the stay at homers. That is sexism right there.

Re: Stay at home wives
The only reasons to stay home is kids or a home business. They're both good reasons.
Other than that, it's just a holiday.
If a person can lead a full life on holiday, they should go for it.

I know! I totally respect that. My husband and I were talking about kids and whatnot and I was considering being a stay at home mom. I'm a nurse currently, which is pretty good, I like it, but I like the idea of "just" being a housewife too when I have little kids running around. And I think he is okay with that. I think.
All my friends YELLED at me when I said I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and made me feel like I was taking back feminism 400 years back or something. But I really don't see it that way.

I hate these women too. They're all over my damn town too. Shit, there's a stay-at-home mom who has a babysitter. It just pisses me off how these woman think they're better than me because their husband bought them a Jaguar.
Reminds me of how one of these woman was staring at my autistic brother throughout my cousin's confirmation mass thing. At the end of mass, I went up to her and said, "didn't your mother ever teach you not to stare bitch? Our life is hard enough without Christians making it even harder." Then her husband said something to me, but I asked him if he was going to do anything about it. Pudgy 50 year old professional didn't want to. Second person in the family to almost get into a fight at church. Good Catholic family we are.
I think my mom probably took the right choice by quitting her job though. My dad has the financial capabilities for us all to live comfortably and my brother has autism. And she had made partner at her law firm before quitting.

Trans States Airlines, the regional for TWA in Saint Louis and JFK, before it became American Connection. I'll admit I'm not a fan of AA.

I've had ignorant people say stuff like that about me too. They act like I just sit around all day and eat bon bons or something. It's been even worse since my daughter started school. People act like I should feel ashamed for not wanting to have a job. These same people spend like 100% of their time bitching about how much they hate their jobs and their lives, BTW.
If your husband makes enough money for you to be a stay at home mom...Why pay someone else to raise your baby when you can do it yourself. I can't imagine if I'd had to go to work and leave my daughter in daycare. When she was a baby I carried her around with me all of the time...A babysitter wouldn't have loved her and taken care of her like I did. Some women have no choice but to work, but if you have the choice...Just do what's best for your family and ignore people who make rude comments because they envy your good life.

I'd like her to have been working for some time mind, just so that she gets some appreciation that money doesn't grow on trees.

Good thing I don't consider myself a Christian. My dad and I only go to placate the rest of the family. I just don't like the Christians who are only Christian for an hour every Sunday.

Re: Stay at home wives
The day I ever become a stay at home wife is the day I kill myself.
That being said, it's fine if you're raising kids. Only when they're little though. Once they're in school you're just being lazy. There is no amount of cleaning or cooking or whatever the fuck you're doing that takes ALL DAY EVERY DAY, ok? My mom always worked while I was growing up, and my house was museum clean all the time, and the food was awesome. I don't know how she did it, but if she can do it, I guarantee anyone can.
As for women who never get a job, live off their husbands money their entire lives and stay home all day and do fuck all, I loathe you. You're bloody useless. Ugh, trophy wives.

I agree, I can be on the road 19-20 days a month, and still do all the house work/grocery shopping in the remaining days off. EVen then I only spend half the day doing it.

Re: Stay at home wives
I'm sure your mother would've rather just had a job OR taken care of the house, instead of working all of the time to have a job AND keep a wonderful home. I have a lot of respect for ladies like her, but I also feel bad for them. You only get one life...Why is it somehow bad to do what you enjoy? (if you have that option)
You're right, I don't spend every minute of every day working. I have a lot of time to do the things I like to do, but why does that make me lazy, useless and a "trophy wife"? I keep the house clean, I cook good food and I take care of my daughter and my husband without the stress of having a paying job as well. Why are you so judgemental about it? Just because your mom had to work and do all of that stuff?
My husband and I aren't rich or anything, but he makes enough money that we don't need a second income. Should I just get a job for the sake of having one? We don't need or even want the extra money...Not at the cost of added stress and less time spent together as a family.
Not every person who chooses not to work is just lazy. Why get a job if you don't need the money or the added hassle?

They're either jealous or on some crusade to end sexism.
I'm jealous, because I'm a lazy bitch and get the male side of sexism that I really don't want.
Why is it so bad for me to stay home, sleep all day and then spend all night on the computer just because I'm male? If I was female, found a man to provide for me and had the same daily habits that I have now I wouldn't be judged nearly as harshly.
I say both sexes need to work on ending the social hatred we receive when we're unemployed. That's become a nasty word recently, "unemployed," and it needs to end. So what if we're not contributing much of anything aside from love? We need to be striving toward happiness instead of efficiency.

My situation is hardly on par with dumpster diving. My husband and I each have our role in the family...It's nothing to look down upon.
And really...We have everything we need and we can save up for the things we want. I mean we don't have a mansion with servants and expensive cars, but we have a nice 3 bedroom home in a beautiful neighborhood, a decent car and I take care of the house so we don't need a servant (as much as I might like one.:P) Yeah if we had more money we could have more STUFF, but you see...We don't want more stuff. People spend their lives in the constant persuit of more stuff. They want a bigger TV, a better computer, an ipod, a newer car...The list goes on and on. People actually have to rent STORAGE facilities because they can't fit all of their useless stuff in the house! I don't even have a TV, my computer is 5 years old, my car is 7 years old and I don't care about having an ipod or a blackberry or a cell phone or more knick knacks or more furniture or any of that other garbage.
It's like I said...You only get one life.

Re: Stay at home wives
Let's say your husband loses his job, then what? Before we did anything financially we had 3 months salary saved up. It's not always about stuff, sometimes it about having the buffer built in.
You won't see me on CNN, saying oh noes!!11!! wat am I to doo???.
Basically my lack of respect for housewives goes a follows;
I have trained long and hard to become a Captain on an airlines. I demand respect because I have EARNED it. As part of training/testing I have done everything that can happen in an airliner (such as single engine go-arounds and engine fires). And because of this fact I am certified to do what I do.
There is no certification/interview for housewives. Anyone can do it. Not everyone can be a network admin/programmer/pilot.etc.

I am positive my mom would have not rather had one or the other. She's ranted time and time again about being sick of being at home and being able to go to work for a few hours to get away from it, and vice versa, bitching about not wanting to go to work. I can't imagine being cooped up in a house all day.
And as for the question "why get a job if you don't need to the money or the added hassle?" How about because it makes you a productive, contributing member of society? Or it provides some sense of independence? Being entirely dependent on someone else to provide for me would suck.
Of course I'm judgmental about it. Most people are. Any guy who doesn't want his wife to work and just wants her to sit at home and bake pies all day is an overbearing control freak. Some women like that. Fine. I don't. And I'm entitled to my opinion.

So Demoiselle wants everyone to live up to the standards she's put in place for herself because she thinks it's healthy (it's what mom did) to feel miserable enough to want to complain all the time about wishing you were elsewhere.
And pilotman thinks he's better than most people because he spent x years learning how to do something that's pretty simple (just time-consuming to learn it all). Which clearly explains why he doesn't respect the unemployed.

Well almost anyone fly a plane, 9-11 showed that. But there's a big difference between flying a plane (into a target) and being a pilot.
Same thing goes for housewives, to a lesser degree of course, no one disputes being a pilot is a lot more difficult-not because of the actual flying (your computer does that for you most of the time :P) but from the responsibility. As a captain you are morally and legally responsible for a couple of hundred lives.
Anyone can cook, clean but very few can 'house keep' in the proper sense of the word and even fewer can be housekeepers and good mothers with responsibilty for a handful of lives.

Hah, no, my mother's obsessive cleaning is certainly not healthy, but sitting at home all day waiting for your husband is certainly not healthy either. Who said anything about being miserable?
I live in a place where right now it's basically impossible to be unemployed. If you don't have a job, you're useless. Any idiot around here can get a job, and make a decent living. Yet we still have tons of homeless people, without jobs, setting up tents in the middle of downtown. Lots of them have jobs and still can't afford a place to live, but that's a completely different story. My entire point is that there is no reason to not be a productive member of society.
I don't expect everyone to live up to the standards I've set for myself. They're pretty damn high, and I disappoint myself on a daily basis. But thinking that sitting around at home all day doing "nothing" is stupid? How is that excessive? And I'm not saying Xiao sits around doing nothing all day, but I just strongly disagree with being entirely dependent on one person for your livelihood.

Re: Stay at home wives
I've seen the useless stay at home Mom that feels stressed.
Some people can't handle life, for various reasons. I don't envy these people.
Living life is one of the best things that anybody can do for themself.
It's excellent to do what you want with the day, but doing it in a constructive manner is a plus.
Stay at home doesn't mean you have to stay in bed, but it's not putting yourself out there.
Where are your opportunities for the future? Staying at home as a lifestyle is limiting to anybody.

Re: Stay at home wives
That being said, it's fine if you're raising kids. Only when they're little though. Once they're in school you're just being lazy. There is no amount of cleaning or cooking or whatever the fuck you're doing that takes ALL DAY EVERY DAY, ok? My mom always worked while I was growing up, and my house was museum clean all the time, and the food was awesome. I don't know how she did it, but if she can do it, I guarantee anyone can
My mother was stay-at-home mom but believe me, she did not just clean once in a while, cook dinner, and then call it a day. I'd even argue that it's easier to deal with kids when they are small. At least you have "nap time" and "play time."
When they get older, they have ballet practice, tennis practice, art lessons, after school club meetings, volunteer work, driving lessons, PTA meetings, tutoring sessions, SAT classes, friends to meet up at the mall, movies to see, concerts to go to, play practice, violin lessons, internship across town, part time job at the restaurant, etc. Lord knows that wasn't even half my life during my teen years. And that was just for me. I had a younger brother who was even more involved in school and whatnot than I was. My mother had no time to just sit at home and wait for my father to come home. She had to prepare breakfast and lunch, keep the house clean, go grocery shopping, fix household things, EVERYthing, before we got home, so that she would have time to chauffeur us around with enough time to make dinner. And that starts from age 5 to 18, or whenever you get your first car.
I think that being a mom is totally a full time job. Your mom, having accomplished all that plus maintaining a career, is wow. I can't even imagine my mother being able to do that. But you realize that that is quite rare, and most extraordinary?
I'd like to be available to my children at all times, like my own mom was. I'm not saying mothers who work are incompetent, but being there for their children like stay at home moms are will be difficult.
Maybe I can say all this because I know that my particular career is not exactly a competetive field. I can get a job no matter where I am or how I am. If someday I end up divorced or widowed, I know it won't be that hard to get my job back and support myself. I guess it's different for a woman who quits a job, has no skills, and literally waits for the bacon to get home so she can go shopping.

While your husband works a fulltime job.

"Homemaking" doesn't require all your time.
I have a huge disdain for housewives/trophy wives, you're useless barely productive members of society.

Kids can walk, ride bikes, take the bus, or take the train.
It teaches independence, which is a good thing.
Why people cart their kids around all night is beyond me.
A ride every once in a while is good and going to see your kids games is great.

Not in the suburbs they can't. There are bus stops or trains in Suburbia. My parents didn't cart me around, I got my license as soon as I could, did what I needed to do after that. But before that, it is very difficult. How can you feel safe sending your 12 year old from the middle-class neighborhood in Duluth, through the ghettos of Norcross, and all the way down Buford highway, on a bike? And then back home, at 8 or 9pm?
It's not that easy to just tell your kid, I don't want to/I don't have the time- why don't you just walk over there?

Re: Stay at home wives
I'd want a wife who's "content" with her choices in life, and felt capable, and confident enough to pursue her dreams, and to live out her days in a fulfilling manner.
If that meant working from home, or doing the whole "house wife" thing, with or without kids, then that'd be cool with me. I can't say i'd "prefer" it over someone who felt the desire to go out and make an impact on themselves, and others, through work. I don't get off on the "dominance" thing of me being the bread winner and my poor weak flower flapping her wrists over the idea of using a till or whatever, but then again, I wouldn't "expect" my wife to have a job she didn't enjoy.
Of course, finances are going to be the bottom line.... if you can't afford to pay the bills, you can curse yourself all you like for being "unsuccessful" and not providing adequately for la famme, but two jobs can pay better than one.
Personally, I like cooking, and I don't have any gender based insecurity of cleaning, or looking after potential kids, or anything like that. Maybe it's clichéd and trite in today's western society, but an equal partnership that still respects differences is at the heart of what i'd consider a healthy relationship. If I was sitting around at home, i'd want to be fulfilled, and personally making sure the mantelpiece is spotless doesn't fulfil me, because I don't really give a fuck. Writing books or articles, doing research, working with clients from home.... whatever though, i'd have no problem with, past a certain stage in my life. I don't think that'd make me a stay at home husband though, as such, even if my wife was out in "the big business world".
If you're trying to follow your dreams, and communicating well along with it, then hey, i'd be happy.
edit: both my parents have worked from home for most of my life, so this has probably influenced me somewhat.

I wasn't implying in my question that stay-at-home wives were supposed to be trophy wives, who just look pretty but they are dumb and vacant and bored. I meant women who are capable of creating a beautiful and comfortable homeand keeping up their own appearances, as well as going after their own personal dreams and goals.
I don't really get the dominance thing either, that a man might feel over being the money maker. I'm sure it's because it's the feeling that without them, no one else in the family could survive... but that's not really something you should do, pull finances away from your own family at your whim, if you really loved someone.

You can never have too much money.
No offense, but you are stupid and can't read.
She JUST SAID they didn't need the extra money. That's their philosophy/how they want to govern their finances, which I assume they are happy with. Then you came in with your own personal philosophy, effectively telling them THEIR philosophy is wrong/what kind of view they should hold towards their finances.
It was both stupid and annoying.

Re: Stay at home wives
How can someone be fired from the military..
Dood anything can happen. My husband knows a guy who was chaptered out recently for having asthma. Another guy we knew a couple of years ago developed bone spurs and was chaptered out because he could no longer meet the physical requirements standards. I mean I know it's a rather remote possibility, but given that we have a child...We want to be as prepared as possible for anything.
Thank you BTW for understanding what I was trying to say. Maybe you feel that way too? That life isn't always about having more money and more stuff, but rather about having enough to be happy and secure without working yourself to death. My parents both worked and are very rich...Much more wealthy than I will ever be. They both have told me that they wish they hadn't worked so much when my sister and I were kids...That they had been able to spend more time with us. Unfortunately, whenever they DID spend time with us, they were both tired and stressed and wanted to relax. My daughter might not go to private school and have music lessons, dance lessons, gymnastics and tons of clothes and toys...But she will have good memories of playing cards and monopoly with me and baking cookies with me and reading at the library with me.

Maybe the other mall sucks.
I said need, not want. If a girl is too young to get to the mall by herself, she has no business going by herself in the first place.

You're saying you've never hung out with friends at the mall when you were in middle school? Or high school, for that matter, when you do not have a license or car?
I don't see what is so hard to understand about the fact that most surburban areas do not have well-developed bus systems, or trains, or subways, etc. Most families tend to live in the suburbs and most people have to drive.
And also, it's beyond just getting to the mall. There are other things that a child wants to do besides go shopping (at the same exact place) every Friday.

Not unless my mom was willing to pick up my friends, take us to the mall, wait outside for us, then take my friends home at the end of the night, which she usually wasn't. Being a mom doesn't automatically make you a taxi service for your children.
Yes, there are going to be things that a child wants to do, like going to the mall (who the fuck needs to go shopping every week, though?), going to the movies, etc..., but that doesn't mean that they need to do any of that stuff.

Why would she wait outside for you? She'd go home and wait for you to call, don't exaggerate.
A mother is a chauffeur, personal therapist, cook, maid, nurse, manager, and coach. That's why they say being a stay-at-home mom is a full time job.
No, a child does not NEED to go to the mall. They also do not NEED to be ballerinas or soccer players or Key Club members. They could just sit at home until they wake up for school the next day and then come home again. But being a functional parent doesn't mean you should just fulfill the bare minimum of what is considered "care." There are so many other things you have do in order to enrich your children's lives.

I don't know, why don't you ask her, since you obviously know so much more about my mother's behavior than I do. I don't know about you, but I certainly didn't have a cell phone when I was little, so she would wait there for my friends and I. And since nobody else's parents were willing to drive them to the mall, she would end up picking everyone up and dropping them off, which is why we went maybe two or three times a year, if that often.
Being a functional parent means taking care of your children and being there for them when they need you, not driving them everywhere they want to go or enrolling them in every sport or activity that they show a passing interest in. You can just as easily enrich your childrens' lives by staying at home and watching a movie with them, playing a board game with them, having them help cook dinner, etc... I don't see how you think that acting as a personal taxi service for your kids is doing anything for them but spoiling the shit out of them and teaching them that there's no need to be independent because mommy will always be there to take care of you and do everything for you.

I honestly think the best thing a parent can teach their kids is responsibility. I didn't have a childhood due to some unfortunate circumstances that left me without a mother and a broken family. I had to amn up and teach myself many things and do things I would rathter not do.
Transportation was a major issue with me when I was younger and it still is today. I grew up in a very rural area, and didn't have anyone to take me anywhere. I used an old '82 Specialized HardRock. Ironically that led me to endurance XC racing and later to a ban from that circuit. That is beside the point.
If I ever have kids I want to teach them responsibility by having them make independant choices and dealing with the consequences of them while guiding them in the right direction.

Even working requires you to get from one place to another. In some mode of transportation. I worked my ass off too. But I needed a ride.

Re: Stay at home wives
Wow this thread pisses me off so much. Judgmental bitches on both sides of what has become an argument.
Anyone having no respect for stay at home moms because their mothers were not, obviously do not see the flaw in that their mother spent too much time outside of the home and not enough time at home to raise you right.
Stay at home moms that don't understand why other mothers would spend so much time at work if all they do is complain, don't understand that women in general just complain to complain. Of course they don't hate their jobs. They just want to complain because women are just balloons full of emotions that need to burst once in a while to feel the reality of their situations. There is a reason why chick flicks are made as they are.
People who think they deserve respect because of all the shit they did to obtain their prestigious careers deserve nothing. If you are looking for respect, you don't deserve it. I'll respect you if you came from a third world country with literally nothing or if you had only one limb and are doing more than most in the world ever dream of.
To answer the original question, I would like a stay at home mom. I am one of those cases where I was left to raise myself. I understand how fucked up I am, I do not want my kids to grow up and not realize how fucked up they are until they are full adults like I did. Society is about conforming to join it and changing it once in. It was pretty fucking hard for me to join and sometimes I slip and lose it for a few seconds.

Re: Stay at home wives
My mom supported my brother and I on her own for a few years. I still got to go to the mall, movies and whatever. She'd drop us off at the movie place, and we'd call her from a payphone later.
Why would a parent have to be at the house when everyone else is at school to better take care of us?
She drove us to school, which started at 7:30am, and we got there early enough to hang out with people for a bit before going to class. She started work at 7:30.
In junior high class got out at 2:36pm, and we'd get home around 3pm (walking took a while, but was still good fun because of everyone that lived close to me walking too).
Mom was home about 5pm, took her less than 5 minutes to get home after work. ^^
Those 2 hours were spent with friends usually, even if mom had the day off.
This was our routine from age 10-17.

This is true- my mom didn't work nonstop from 7am when she sent us off for school, until 11 pm, when we went to sleep. But there are still a lot of things to do. Especially when the father is busy/messy/whatever. It's just that I think a job will sort of wear a person out by the end of the day.
BTW- I have not decided officially that I'm going to be a stay-at-home mom and that's that. I'm still just weighing pros and cons. I see both sides of the issue. It's just hard not to be biased by my own childhood.

Re: Stay at home wives
Ugh. This thread is full of really insecure, petty people arguing useless semantics.
My personal stance is that being a full time wife and mother (or a full time husband and father) is a totally legitimate way to spend your time. If there is no financial stress on the family and there is a steady primary income from either spouse, then I don't see why the other partner shouldn't stay home and attend to domestic duties and be responsible for the daily work around the home, and the ins-and-outs, appointments, rides to friends' houses, etc. that come along with raising children. However I do think it is stupid for women to just jump into the role of wife/mother just because they feel that is what their gender dictates, or because that is what their husband wants. Likewise, I don't think that being responsible for domestic duties should be limited to women; if a female lawyer who makes $500,000 a year is married to an auto-mechanic who makes $60,000 a year, and they feel someone should be staying home with their children, why shouldn't it be the husband?
Personally, I wouldn't mind giving up work to raise a family, if and only if I felt like I had achieved my goals in my career and was ready to focus on a different area of life. It' stupid to throw away your ambitions and success because you have a vagina. I also wouldn't mind working if there was no need for me to be at home.
Laziness is unnacceptable. However, there is a huge difference between lazing around watchings soaps all day while your husband slaves away to put food on the table and being a chef, maid, chauffeur, nurse, therapist, and babysitter and the other various jobs a full-time mother performs.

Re: Stay at home wives
not meaning to critisise anyone that does it, but I cannot imagine being a SAHM. I don't like cleaning the house - neither did my mother, we had a cleaner come in once a week. Both of my parents worked full time.
My boss has her own business (it's a small business - we work out of her house). I think her kids suffer because of it. She decided to start her own business because she wanted to be able to work from home. She is a qualified accountant, she could have gotten a perfectly good (and high paying job).
Her kids (15 months and 3.5yrs) are constantly 'getting in the way' and she just ends up yelling at them. She's gotten an au pair now.
My parents both worked full time since I was about a year old. I don't think it's a bad thing - the time we spent together was quality time. Some of my friends' mothers stayed at home and it just resulted in strained relationships between them because they saw way too much of each other and their mothers were too involved in their lives.
Interestingly, about half of my friends' mothers stayed at home, and those girls are the ones that plan to do the same. My friends whose mothers worked plan to do the same when they have kids.
I don't think there's a right or wrong thing to do, but I would be really bored staying home and cleaning and cooking.
Also, I would never legitimately be able to ask my husband for help around the home because that would be 'my job'. I'd have all day to do it.
Also, Xiao, can you give me a typical run down of your day? Just out of curiosity.

What about those of us that HAVE to do all the household duties and work?
There's nothing at all wrong with staying home, but it's really hard to support a family with just one income and 2 is almost always better, even with the advantages of being home.

If both parents have to work to support the family, by all means, they should. I'm not criticizing that. I know plenty of full-time work parents who get all their jobs done. It's just that my own mother never worked and it seemed like her hands were always full, so I don't know that I am confident enough to pull it off either.
And I do support stay-at-home dads too, if that's what it takes. My husbands just happens to make more than me, and with our incomes combined, we are doing great. Taking me out of the equation wouldn't make a huge impact on finances.

I don't see how dropping your kid off at the mall every Friday enriches their life, either. Please, enlighten me. At least if you're at home, spending time with your children, you know where they are and what they're doing, which isn't the case if you drop them off at the mall. They can just as easily be assaulted/harrassed/abducted at the mall as they can on the way to the mall. And there are only so many stores you can shop at and only so much money you can spend. Also, way to ignore the other suggestions that I made as alternatives to acting as a personal taxi service for your children.
Public pay phones don't do any good when your parent doesn't have a cell phone, either.
Those activities were not "passing interests." To get into a decent college, you need extracurricular activities and other interests. I got into every college that I applied to, and the only extracurricular activities that I had were one season of volleyball and one season of swim team. And neither one of those required my mom to do any extra driving. Well, when I was on the swim team, she had to pick me up at the pool 2 miles away from my school rather than actually at school, but that's a negligible difference. The point is, you don't need your parents to drive you every single place that you want to go.
So you're saying that until you turned 16, you weren't able to do anything without the help of your parents?

Sorry, I believe I said a DECENT college. If you're going to get petty and triflin', I will, too. No top tier college is going to accept a kid with one season of volleyball and one season of swim team under their belt into their fine facilities. Especially not nowadays. No, my parents didn't push me to get into a good college- I wanted it, and they supported me.
No, I wasn't really able to get around very many places without my parents. I had some older friends with cars when I was a freshman, but it's not like they are going to take me ballet. Also, did I mention (like 49 times) that living in the fucking suburbs is fucking difficult for the car-less?

Stop trying to reason with her. She's just going to come up with more ridiculous assertions and petty attacks. You don't need to explain or justify yourself to people like her...Or to anyone for that matter. You have good memories of your mother and she sounds like a good role model. Do you really care what an immature bitch like xilikeeggs0 has to say about...Anything? Really, the same goes for demoiselle, what with her strange "mother issues" and all.
I have been a homemaker for over 10 years now and I think it's great. My husband and I spend a lot of time together and are the happiest married couple I know. I don't think I should be forced to stay home or that my role is set in stone because I'm a woman and that's just my "place" or something. I choose to stay home because it's what is best for my family and I like not having to worry about a job.
Being a stay at home wife is no better or worse than being a teacher or a nurse or a lawyer or whatever.

I choose to stay home because it's what is best for my family and I like not having to worry about a job.
Being a stay at home wife is no better or worse than being a teacher or a nurse or a lawyer or whatever.

You're coming off as very hostile, and it's a bad thing.
Instead of rationally approaching the dissent, you're pointing out their issues and saying that you know better because you're in a loving marriage.

Re: Stay at home wives
I don't mean to come off as a jerk or something. I just find it irritating when people are so judgemental about a woman or a man choosing to be a stay at home spouse.
And I don't think I'm better than women who work outside the home. I just don't think they're better than me. And I do think I can give an infomed opinion to the OP on the subject, because I happen to know a lot about being a stay at home mom and that's what the thread is about.

I don't know why I'm picking petty fights. I guess it's cause xilikeeggs talk 'bout ma mama and I have to defend her. Or something equally white trashy like that. Meh.

Re: Stay at home wives
I didn't say every Friday. I'm not talking about just the mall. I'm just saying, kids have shit to do.
And also, it's beyond just getting to the mall. There are other things that a child wants to do besides go shopping (at the same exact place) every Friday.
Orly?
Sorry, I believe I said a DECENT college. If you're going to get petty and triflin', I will, too. No top tier college is going to accept a kid with one season of volleyball and one season of swim team under their belt into their fine facilities. Especially not nowadays. No, my parents didn't push me to get into a good college- I wanted it, and they supported me.
I was accepted to and received a scholarship from Washington University, which is ranked #12 in the country (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php). Don't talk shit unless you're sure that you're right.
By the way, the college that I ended up attending is in the top 10 in Texas when it comes to graduation rates, is listed as a “College that Builds Character” by the John Templeton Foundation, and was listed as one of the "Best Business Schools" and "Best Law Schools" in the country by the Princeton Review in 2007.
Now, what college did you go to again? With all of the activities that your mom had you enrolled in, I can't imagine that you would attend anything less than Harvard or Yale.
No, I wasn't really able to get around very many places without my parents. I had some older friends with cars when I was a freshman, but it's not like they are going to take me ballet. Also, did I mention (like 49 times) that living in the fucking suburbs is fucking difficult for the car-less?
As I've mentioned (like 49 times), you do not need a car when you're a teenager, just like you didn't need to take ballet lessons. But you chose to, and your parents chose to let you and chose to drive you there. That's great, I'm happy for you. But not all of us were that lucky, and I think you'd be surpised to learn how many of us turned out fairly normal, even though we didn't have our parents to drive us around all the time.

You don't have to worry about what she says. Her mother apparantly didn't have much time for her (according to her posts) and I imagine she resents the very IDEA of an attentive mama. You're never going to show her anything, because she doesn't want to be shown.

Re: Stay at home wives
Women shouldn't have to work outside the home if they don't want to.
Feminism was a scam -- like all Jewish created political movements -- now Western women enjoy the "right" to work 9 hour days outside of the home and never see the their illegitimate children who spend all of their waking hours in daycares, meanwhile the children's father is no where to found because they exercised their "independence" and realized that "marriage is slavery".

Sounds like the wife of my dreams. Would make work a lot nicer, when you know someone like that is waiting for you at home.
And I'm not really that interested in living in a villa and driving a fancy german car, so I don't really see a problem with only one person making a living in the family.

Hey, if my wife wants to stay at home, fine, but I would imagine that it would be pretty boring for her.

See that's what I mean- I think a lot of guys like the idea of a beautiful, well-rested woman waiting for them after a long day at work. At least that's what I've been hearing.

Uh, yes really. It clearly says that kids don't want to go to the mall every Friday. They have other things they want to do. I'm not arguing with you anymore. I simply do not care. And no, I don't have to tell you what college I went to in order to prove my intelligence. Since you went to a good college, go get yourself a good job and support your kids so that they may have the opportunity to succeed as you did.

Re: Stay at home wives
Good thread. I've never really thought about it, but I guess it would be nice to come home to a wife and a baby waiting on me. I have no need to work, my finances are exorbitant, thus making my only productivity in beer drinking and internet surfing.
I almost kind of envy people who have normal lives, even the new parents who both work 8-12 hour days. It varies from couple to couple. I know some people who are poor and still only the husband or boyfriend will work.
Also take into consideration the number of children they have. Take a man who has three kids under the age of five. How is it even possible for the mother to work? How insanely expensive would it be for daycare of three children?
What if it's someone like myself? Am I lazy because I don't need to work, because it's ludacris to bust my ass at KFC for a shitty $200 pay check?
I understand, if you're roughing it and are poor, get a damn job and help your SO out, otherwise, what's the point?

I know. Think about the Gosselins. Except it's not 3, it's 8!! That would be so much fun and I would totally be at home with them (but only if it was Collin, Aaden, Joel, Alexis, Leah, Hannah, Cara, and sometimes Mady).
Alright, now who's with me?
Anyone?
