Default How do I add a second monitor/dual screen setup in n00buntu?

I plug the monitor into my laptops port thing and turn it on, then go to system-> admin -> screen resolution and hit the "detect displays" but nothing happens? I cant think of any other way to make it work.

Try installing the nvidia driver from nvidia.com first. Then come back here.
AKA don't use the default driver.

Is there any advantage in using the the drivers from NVIDIA.com over using nvidia-glx-new?

No, there's a disadvantage in that apt won't know of your driver. Use the Driver Manager (System>Administration>Hardware Drivers) to manage your non-free drivers. This allows you to easily remove them and also allows them to be updated by apt.

There is no advantage using drivers from nvidia.com over the drivers in the repositories. In fact, there is a disadvantage, because apt won't know of your driver and will not be able to update it.
