Fuck Gentoo's shitty GUI apps
So I had an 80gb HDD, with an operating system already on it, and about 55gb unpartitioned space, and I decided to install Gentoo. I made the terrible decision of using the graphical installer.
Reading Gentoos installation handbook clearly states;
Quote:
|
If you choose to go with the Recommended layout, the installer will create three partitions: 100MB for /boot, a /swap partition up to 512MB in size, and the rest of the available space on the disk is used for /, the root partition. If you have more than 4GB of unpartitioned space, using the "Recommended layout" will automatically configure your partitions without destroying any data on any existing partitions.
|
So I used the recommended layout button, and guess what? it reformated my entire drive, destroying the OS already on there.
The Morals of the story;
1. don't use GUIs for SRS BZSNS (why oh why did I not just use cfdisk)
2. fuck Gentoo

Re: Fuck Gentoo's shitty GUI apps
If I trusted Ubuntu wiki documentation, I would get nowhere quick.

hahaha, true true...
I think I am going to go off "graphical" distros, and give something like arch a try. Strangely, I've never managed to screw up anything via the command line...

Re: Fuck Gentoo's shitty GUI apps
Gentoo's documentation is by far the best, but their graphical installer tries to warn you a lot. You were warned.
My favourite way to install a gentoo system is just doing it manually -- I dislike how the installers hijack the experience from you. It helps that PPC, the architecture I do most of my gentooing on, has no installer.
The Ubuntu wiki is also very good. I'd trust most, if not all, of the stuff on there, with the caveat that a lot is out of date.

Given that there was such a massive error so early on in the first piece of documentation you read...I have to disagree.
I have never been lead wrong by ubuntu docs, nor slack for that matter.

What massive error are you referring to?
I'm talking about the gentoo wiki, which I frequently use as a resource even for other distros.

^^What I quoted in my first post.
I am talking about the Gentoo Handbook, which was on the desktop of my Gentoo Live CD.

Ah.
Well, IIRC the installer warns you about itself, and if you ask anyone about the GTK installer, they'll say it's unstable and recommend the curses-based one.
Not that you could have known that, though. Maybe you should file a bug report?
