I know that in France, pretty much everyone had the clap. And alot of people got syphilis, and back then they didnt have a cure, so your face would fall off, you would go insane and then die.

AIDS came about in the 80s, and only gay men where infected, so my guess due to the time period and gay men, it was most likely accidently made when someone made a bad batch of crystal meth, the 80s was the drug years, and gay man's drug was meth.
