Really? I remember with the PS2 Sony's GNU/linux distro wouldn't let you use the DVD drive, but I don't see why they'd disable the graphics processor.
Of course, if linux was GPLv3 this wouldn't be an issue, because someone could distribute an un-DRM'd version and Sony wouldn't be able to prohibit you from installing it.
