Anyone Use the Terminal?
What do you use it for? What tasks are best done with the terminal and how did you learn to use it?
I have never had the need for it, but I feel like I am missing out.

Re: Anyone Use the Terminal?
Same as above.
I use it as opposed to the automater sometimes as I am more adept at using it.

Check Processes

I can't remember, but it's fun to see the lines of text zoom by.
du

ping (used to use it a lot to circumvent the website filters).

Re: Anyone Use the Terminal?
Terminal is a little bit of irony in the mac OS.
Since most mac users are computer illiterates, having a command line in the OS is like putting a calculator in a baby's toy.

And yet the people who have replied already, DO know how to use it, thus, blowing your idiotic "mac owners are computer illiterates" theory out of the water.
We know enough to know the Mac OS is built on a more stable foundation than Windows piece of shite.

People on totse don't qualify for the "most" category.
Oh, by the way, I think this might help you tremendously. Don't make another post until you go through the whole page.

Re: Anyone Use the Terminal?
You can compile source code in Terminal, provided you install the Dev tools on the OSX install disk.

Re: Anyone Use the Terminal?
I use it to monitor processes that are taking up CPU time
top -u
To delete resource fork files from my mp3 player
rm .*
Check on disc usage
df
send spoof email with pine, batch move all files of a particular type to a particular folder, kill unresponsive processes, and move files I probably shouldn't.

Re: Anyone Use the Terminal?
I use kextload, kextunload and kextstat to debug kernel panics and otherwise manage kernel extensions. I don't think Apple provides any graphical utilities for doing the same.
