Also, how expensive are they to buy?

Do you have to get them from a specialist? Or just like, an exotic pet dealer?

Depends a lot on what species you get.

I'd start out with a Red-eared slider, they're cheap and readily available. A solid starter turtle.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-eared_slider

Pretty much covers all the basics.

You'll need a pretty sizable tanks with water and also dry landing space.

And a big fucking filter, turtles are dirtier than goldfish.

Personally I'd put 1 or 2 turtles in a 40 gallon with a basking lamp and another uva/uvb lamp over the dry landing, put a 100 gallon powerfilter+biowheel on and call it a day.

Assuming whatever species you pick won't outgrow it.

I've suddenly deemed you irresponsible and unfit to care for another life.

However... before I started keeping my red-eared slider in the pond out back, we had to change the tank once every 5 days or the smell would become utterly putrid.

Kept an UV light shined on dry land. It would sit up there with it's hind legs outstretched behind its self.

The aquarium I live near is FULL of turtles people bought and then realised they couldn't care for them / got bored of them / they grew too big. Make sure to get a species that isn't gonna grow huge. They need space.

Go to your local library and get a goddamned book on turtles. It's not that hard to learn about them. The information will be a lot more solid than totse posters...
