Going on vacation while growing
So my friend is growing a sexy little marijuana plant in his closet with a shitty flourescent bulb. It sprouted only a couple days ago, I'd say its 3 inches tall, and only has one node so far. Its lookin pretty good and healthy so far.
Unfortunately, he has to go visit his brother in Dallas in a week or so, and will probably be gone for about 2 weeks. Can his plant go that long without water, assuming he nearly floods it right before he leaves? And what about the lighting situation? Seeing as hes using a flourescent bulb, he normally puts it ~2" away from the plant and has to adjust it every two days or so due to growth; but since hes going away for two weeks, should he just set it ~1' from it?
Will it even survive under these conditions? My friend could get one of his friends to come over and adjust the light and water it once a week, but it would be a hassle.
Thanks!

You should just give up now... You won't be able to grow a plant until you read a LOT more.

On a completely unrelated note...

Do you have AIM or MSN?

Re: Going on vacation while growing
My friend doesn't plan on growing a massive sativa that wears a coat of trichnomes that will fuck his brains out with one hit. Its just a cute little future hermaphrodite from his 10 sack.
This ain't no wholesale operation, just a few eighths and some playstation is my vocation! :D

I live in Texas. That thing would dry out faster than Diana Adams's pussy after she felt Rocky Dennis's face.
On a side note, I have a minifan directed at it right now to strengthen the stem, but I'm considering taking it out of the room before I leave since that might expidite the drying process.

A CFL or regular florescent?
If it's a regular florescent, give it up. You won't even get but a joint off of it.
And leaving it for two weeks it will definitely die or at least be stunted. If you had an automated system it'd probably be okay, but not with what you're working with. You should just ghetto rig yourself an ebb and flow tray or a drip system.

Re: Going on vacation while growing
Have someone you trust come over and tend to it's needs.
I'd suggest about 150ml of water per plant/per week. Not tons of water one day and then a drought for 2 weeks.

Re: Going on vacation while growing
I've just been spraying the top of the soil every day or two, since the root system is pretty shallow at the moment.
I don't care if I only get a joints worth from the plant, its just a hobby. It's not like I'm expecting it to fuel my habbits, this is pretty much just for novelty.
But I guess I could ghetto-rig myself a drip system... Somehow. Thanks guys!

A CFL or regular florescent?
http://selectroclash.files.wordpress.com/2007/04/cfl_light_bulb.jpg
Looks like that. Produces 680 lumens per sq ft I think; plus I have the closets main light that I can turn on before I leave to add a little more light (its burnt out at the moment). Should be enough in my opinion, but I'm sure you guys know more about it than I do.
The light is on 24 hours a day at the moment for maximum growthage. I might switch it down to 18 hours 1/2 or 3/4ths of the way through the vegitative stage, maybe not. But I'm definately gonna switch it down to 12 hours when it reaches 10-12 inches... I'm not THAT dumb.

Re: Going on vacation while growing
dont put it outside whatever you do. the natural light will be like an OD for a flourescent grown plant.
id say just try again when he gets back.

Re: Going on vacation while growing
You never grow 1 plant. you should always grow 3-4 plants to ensure at least one ends up a female.

This is true. Put it by a window to get used to the sun, then out side in indirect sunlight for a half hour the first day and gradualy go up by 1-3 hours until it gets used to it. I hope you have a fan blowing on it to, or its going to fall over soon.

Re: Going on vacation while growing
I'm not going to put it in the sun AT ALL. And yes, I have 1' diameter fan blowing beside it (not directly on it, although it still gets some air) 24 hours a day.

I always kept a fan blowing ON mine and they ended up strong. Let it get a little bigger then put the fan more on it. Your not going to like it when that 1 plant ends up a male.

My last friend 2 friends who grew 1 plant each both had males, so I figure my chances are good that I'll get a female. Even if it turns out to be a male, I won't be that mad... Like I said its just a hobby.

Re: Going on vacation while growing
It should be alright on the water, don't flood it, just give it a little extra, your only supposed to water it about once a week anyhow.
Seeing as it's on a 24 hour cycle for veg I don't see any big problem if you don't really care if it makes it or not, it could or it couldn't who knows. I doubt it but it could work. If not just start over again.

Re: Going on vacation while growing
I got an idea. Leave the light on a not so high setting or set the plant next to a window. Then make some sort of contraption that would constantly drip water on to the plant but not flooding just a small amount of water. So that way the light from outside would hit it and then there would be your contraption very slowly dripping water on the plant so it doesn't flood but still gets sufficient water. Come back and your plant has grown a foot.
