Default nicotine detox?

I would like to quit smokeless tobacco. I have some hypnosis audio files but they don't seem to help so much. I thought about trying those nicotine patches or the gum, but it is rather expensive (like $50 a box where I'm at). Does that stuff really help people quit? I keep hearing that they only work 7% of the time, and quitting cold turkey is basically impossible.

Wait, you're saying it's impossible to quit nicotine cold turkey?

You are such a faggot. "Quitting" nicotine is so much easier to do than trying to stop smoking weed everyday.

I've quit cold turkey as many times as the average smoker has quit in his lifetime, it doesn't last long because the temptation to buy more keeps coming back. Plus tobacco use is all around you, everyone else is doing it so the thought comes to mind that is also okay for you to use it too.

Nicotine is arguably more addictive then either heroin or Cocaine. Quiting smokeless tobacco with patches/gum is fucking retarded...

Nicotine patches are not some magic drug that helps you quit, they're synthetic nicotine. Basically instead of hitting a cig you get your nicotine from gum or a patch. The only good thing is they come in different steps/doses so you can sortof wean yourself off. Don't expect it to be easy.

No, that is not a joke. Nicotine is at least as addictive as heroin. Just because it dosn't get you high don't mean that your body can't get addicted to it. So go smoke a pack a day for a few years, then tell us how hard it is for you to quit.

I've seen people quit smoking cold turkey after several years of daily smoking and just get a little grumpy. When a heroin addict quits, even if they have just been strung out for a few weeks, there will be a lot of pain and sickness. Without it a junky can't function.

Um heroin? Last time I checked you can still function while withdrawing from nicotine. with h you have restles legs, body aches, nausea, vomiting, yawning, teary eyes, sweating, runny nose, insomnia to name a few. Basically you have to lay there for a week.

heroin is worse because there is a physical aspect to the addiction, everyone who's said nicotine is more addictive is referring to the fact thats its more psychologically addicting than heroin

Did i say that nicotine has worse of a withdrawal? No!

According to studies by Henningfield and Benowitz, overall nicotine is more addictive than cannabis, caffeine, ethanol, cocaine, and heroin when considering both somatic and psychological dependence. However, due to the stronger withdrawal effects of ethanol, cocaine and heroin, nicotine may have a lower potential for somatic dependence than these substances.[35][36] A study by Perrine concludes that nicotine's potential for psychological dependency exceeds all other studied drugs[37] - even ethanol, an extremely physically addictive substance with severe withdrawal symptoms that can be fatal.

Sure, heroin WD are horrible. But the body is naturally designed for dealing with such an addiction.

Smoking cessation can and does bring about suppressed/medicated mental disorders....
Nicotine use results in permanent alterations to the Acetylcholineric and thus and Dopaminic systems and is more or less permanent.

Do you have any more information on this subject?

Also, I could smoke multiple cigarettes a day, for days straight, then quit no problem. Although I dont know for sure, I have a feeling that that would not be the case with heroin.

Edit: Also, in your second section of underlined text, I think that the keyword there is potential. That word can be thrown around pretty loosely.

I.E. One in every couple hundred people will become psychologically addicted to nicotine easier that crack cocaine...Therefore, nicotine is potentially more addicting.

I just made that up, its just to give an example.

that is going to depend on the individual.

You don't hear people getting robbed/killed for ciggarettes/cigarette money like you hear of with crack heads for their crack.

The use of eating ice in smoking cessation, ironically, is as a topical anaesthetic.

Most of the gastric effects are from chewing, rather than smoking - a spitter still swallows traces, but a smoker rarely actually swallows smoke... but when the localized tolerance occurs, consider this : most muscular contraction, including the peristalsis of the intestines, is entirely acetylcholine-dependent - aside from bronchioconstriction and pupil dilation, the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors.

The entire bowel gets paralyzed for a few months. 'n can flood with excess water, though the mechanism for that is unknown.

It actually takes alot longer than you think to become addicted to heroin. By addicted, I mean, full blown addicted...needing to dose several times a day, or you begin to withdrawl. Read "junky", by Wiliam Burroughs. Its a loosely based, recount of his life, and he was an addict of opiates for more than 50 years. I cant recall the exact quote, but he said it takes a few months of daily use to become a dope addict.

You don't hear people getting robbed for alcohol/ alcohol money either, because alcohol is a legalized, socially accepted substance. You don't need to do anything illegal in order to consume it, and even addicts can figure out it's better to keep it that way because they don't need law trouble on top of addiction trouble.

Nicotine only stays in your body a few days. There's no need to "detox" from fucking nicotine. After those first few days it is 100% psychological.

Patches/gum don't accomplish shit aside from providing the nicotine addict their fix in a more health-conscientious way. Same concept as going from dope to 'done.

How long do the psychological effects last? thats where I'm fucked. I can quit for a couple of days, no problem, but then the temptation/buzz craving is still there. then i end up hopping in my car, running to a local liquor stop-n-rob store, and picking up a can, even if its fucking 3 in the morning.

The psychological aspect will last a long, long time. This varies greatly from person to person and depends on a number of variables, such as coping mechanisms and willpower.

The hardest part of it is teaching yourself that when you feel stressed/angry/tired/bored, there are other ways to correct the problem besides smoking a cigarette. Unless you find some alternative methods of relief for yourself, it's going to be very hard to balance the scale between giving in and smoking or abstaining and feeling like total shit. There is a middle ground.

I came off benzos a few times (major psychological withdrawals/cravings) and for me it was always easier to supplement the times of my use (stress, anxiety, depression, frustration) with other things that had a tendency to relax me, like, in my case, music and creative writing.

I also tried keeping a journal log of frequency of the cravings, their severity, and how I reacted to the craving at that time, whether it was constructive or not. I found that as I went along in my recovery I could look back over these entries and note times of increased craving, times of decreased craving, and both the external (shitty day at work) and internal (feeling overwhelmed) factors that contributed to each respectively. This helped me a lot in better preparing myself mentally to either continue doing what was working for me in related future situations or learning what I need to work on to reduce negative reactions.

Sounds fuckin' complicated, I know, and sometimes it is. But psychological addiction is a motherfucker and tends to be a lot more complex than some people think.

EDIT: Forgot you said you dip and don't smoke; just replace wherever I said "cigarettes" with "dip" and its the same concept obviously.

Default Re: nicotine detox?

I think a lot of the reason that cigs are so hard to quit may be because there's no withdrawl. Heroin or benzo addicts can stop for a few days, and yeah, they might go through hell for a while. But after that hell, they have something to look back on and say "THAT's why I don't take that drug anymore!"

With nicotine, however, the consequences usually aren't that terrible, unless you get cancer, in which case you're pretty much fucked anyway. With cigs, you can't run very far (which isn't a huge problem in most scenarios) your lungs may hurt a little, you cough shit up. All of this sucks, but it's not that terribly bad. There's not a whole lot telling your body to stop compared to the dopamine release it gives you.

And that's not even saying anything about the hand-to-mouth habit, which I believe is the reason I smoke as much as I do. People are creatures of habit. We create routines for ourselves. When our routine says to smoke a cig when you get up, after meals, after work, etc. it's kind of hard to just stop doing that. I'm constantly finding myself light up when I don't even want a cig, just cause I'm waiting on something, or because I just finished a task.

There's also the fact that it's impossible to escape seeing tobacco constantly. When you're quitting, it's best to not even think about the drug, but a LOT of people smoke. Walk by a movie theater and you'll smell cigs. You can most likely bum one from someone very easily, too. Chances are your friends smoke as well. You're not just going to sit around your house constantly until you forget that you smoke. That's asking for relapse. But if you go to hang out with someone and the room's chonged out with cigs the entire time, it makes it a little harder.

I'm really not trying to argue either way here. I've never been addicted to heroin, benzos or anything considered a hard drug. These are just some observations from someone on the brink of quitting cigs.

i very much disagree with this statement, in just about every way.

smoke a cigarette every 3 hours for 3 days- stop cold turket see how you feel

inject some good heroin every 3 hours for 3 days.- stop cold turkey see how you feel

guaranteed you wont feel anything from the cigarettes, but you will feel like shit from the skag

smoke a cig every 3 hours for 20 years- stop cold turkey see how you feel

inject some heroin every 3 hours for 20 years- stop cold turkey, see how you feel

i am sure you will feel like shit from the cigarettes as both me and my dad have quit smoking so i know first hand, although i only smoked for 3 years, he smoked for close to 30.

however, with the heroin, you will be in hell, you will be incapacitated, unable to eat, sleep, or do anything, other then shit your brains out uncontrollably. you will sweat non-stop but somehow manage to still be cold as fuck, and you skin will be crawling the whole time, after about 4 days of this, the lack of sleep and utter pain (especially in the legs for me) will make you prepared to kill yourself.

i would much rather "withdrawl" from nicotine anyday

it does procude a noticeable high, otherwise people wouldn't do it. It may not be like shooting a fucking stamp bag every day of your life but it still makes you high. And nicotine is addictive, its hard to quit not just because of natural tolerance but because its LEGAL and easy to get pretty much anywhere.

so stfu and leave the OP alone.

And as for the OP, the gum is basically gum with nicotine in it so you get addicted to the expensive ass $70 gum instead. Fuck that, just wean off by dipping a little less every day so your tolerance tapers off.

I love smokeless tobacco, but I don't think I'm using it right. I use moist snuff (You know the stuff that comes in small cans, like Skoal, Husky, etc.).

Anyway, I can't get it to stay together in my mouth. I roll it in my fingers and pinch it really tight into a ball and tuck it between my lip and gum. But as soon as the juices start to form it starts to get soft and gooey and fall apart.

Can somebody please explain the correct way to use moist snuff?

Can't believe people argue over what is "more addicting". Heroin and nicotine are both highly addictive substances. If you do them enough, you will become physically dependent. End of story. Heroin withdrawal is much worse, but they're essentially equally difficult to quit. It's possible to quit anything cold turkey, but the psychological aspect makes it extremely difficult.

There are many smokers who aren't psychologically addicted at all. Their bodies want the nicotine, but they just smoke for the sake of smoking. They can quit no problem. You'll get headaches and nausea for a while after quitting cigarettes, but it's the psychological hell that makes it extremely difficult.

One question: Is the following fact or fallacy?

Is it true that dip has fiberglass in it, or is that just a myth? I remember one day I decided to try Husky Long Cut Mint. When I got to work I opened the can, and you could see small white particles among the shredded tobacco leaves. I noticed that the particles reflected light as I tilted the can back and forth in well lit room I was sitting in.

im not sure if the fiberglass thing is true or not. i think the small white particles were to produce the mint flavor. you should just switch to cigarettes if you are going to keep using tobacco products. most women find that alot better then spiting out black tobacco juices.

It says here in my old high school health class textbook that dip is made by combining scrap tobacco shreds with flavoring syrups that are composed mostly of sugars and salts, since tobacco alone has an unpleasant taste.

So the mint flavor is produced by these thick syrups that are mixed with the leaves. So I'm still not sure what the mysterious white particles are. Get a can of Husky (its only like a dollar or so), and take it into a decent-lit room, and after you open it, tilt it back and forth. You will see what I'm talking about.

if it had fiberglass in it you would feel it getting stuck in your mouth. Take a little and rub it on your skin. If it does not get itchy and anoying it probably does not have it in it.
