That's not necessarily true...think of it like blunt force trauma or a bruise. When you get hit, it doesn't really hurt that much. But the next morning, if you aggravate the injury you'll feel it even if you only touch it lightly. Also when both of you have adrenaline going you don't tend to feel as much pain until after the fact.

EDIT: Also, it doesn't need to be rough to do damage when you don't use lube her first time. That was a pretty noob thing to do.
