Has AA helped anyone?
My moms going to alchoholic anonymous meetings, and that's all good and all and if it helps her that's even better. But i was reading the handbook they give out and basically all the 12 steps have to do with "god", which turns me off automatically to the whole program since i don't belive in god.
are there any programs out there that don't center around god? and has AA helped anyone (whether religious or not)?

Re: Has AA helped anyone?
AA changes your addiction to alcohol to an addiction to God. Whether or not that works depends on the individual.

Re: Has AA helped anyone?
It does kinda have to do with god, but it isn't required to view it like that. If you leave out the god parts it isn't like it won't help you anymore. But yeah, AA is "spiritualy" based.

Re: Has AA helped anyone?
only weak people need the help of others to fix their own fucking problems, and these people would be the ones most susceptible to religious persuasion. that's why they do it. because addicts are fucking stupid and might just fall for the bullshit.

Do you know anything about AA? You don't use it as a crutch, nor do you use the other group members as a crutch. Being with people that are sharing your same troubles, Im sure, would helo quite a bit.

Re: Has AA helped anyone?
I went to a couple of NA meetings when my sister was going to them and they were kind of a help. You get to know a new set of people who arnt centered around getting high and you start going out with them and doing non-drug related activities. Thats really the only good thing I saw from the program was the people getting new friends who had mind sets to keep you and themselfs drug free.

Re: Has AA helped anyone?
I've been going to SMART recovery since I got arrested (simply to make me look better to the judge if it did go to court). It's more of a self-help approach which is based on rationality and scientific studies, rather than God. Their view is that addiction is a learned (mis)behaviour that you can eventually learn to stop, as opposed to the disease approach (where you will never be free from addiction - I think that's bullshit but then again AA/NA have helped millions of people worldwide). To each his own.
