Humans are NOT "top of the food chain"
This is just some bullshit i thought up, but it makes sense. Think about it, many animals can work in pack more efficiently than us. Sure we are far more intelligent, but most people won even kill an animal, prepare it and eat it. Some won't even choose the live animal they eat. Some don't even eat meat. Sure we have guns and technology, but what if we had no guns, or modern technology. 21st century humans would die, straight out. Thought opinions? *prepares for flaming*

I agree with you... in a sense, we have become dependent on technology, you could say that without it we'd be nothing more than hairless apes

How do you think humans got to the top? We still have basic survival instincts. In the event that all guns and technology magically disappeared we would still survive. Sure, the vegetarians would have to adjust or they would die.
You underestimate humans, even the dumbest of us can make fire and sharp pointy sticks to stab animals with.It wouldn't necessarily be easy, but we would adjust.

Yes but it could take a while. Especially since obesity is a major problem in some countries, and most people can't run so fast as to catch an animal and stab it. Sure people who are good with the javelin could get some, but what about the people who literally depend on technology like disabled people. Wave bye-bye to Steven Hawkins. Yes we used our primal instincts to get to the top, but we have los touch with these awesome instincts.

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
We are the only animals who figured out agriculture. We would not die.
This argument is dependent upon the limitations of the model of the food chain. If you take away our technology then you have to remove bird's talons. Because as they would regrow their talons, we would rebuild our technology.
The disabled people would die of course, just like if a wild animal breaks its leg it's dead for sure. But one human /= human race

Not true. Certain ants practice agriculture on fungus. And their combined biomass is much more than ours. You could argue that other animals practice agriculture as well, considering the role of their digestive systems in certain plants reproductive cycles. It's not conscious or directed agriculture, but it's essentially the same thing.
I don't see the point in evaluating us minus our technology. We have a relationship with it that isn't likely to end. Every organism out there would die in a significantly altered environment.

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
its because the society we live in makes us go against evolution. we are keeping every kind of person alive, even those unfit for normal survival.
so if the only humans in the world were the survivors (just as all non human organisms are survivors today) ie. all the pussies/vegetarians/pacifists died, then humans, with our evolutionary advantages (our brains) could defeat every other animal on the planet

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
I'd say that we are, because of technology.
The human is still a tough creature, if it wasn't it wouldn't have traveled all over the planet and survived for thousands of years. Some would die off if we lost the technology, but I'm sure that once the ability to farm was regained and there was some division of labour technology would appear again.
Remember that if we didn't develop agriculture we would have no other technology, since all of our time would be spent going looking for food.

You overlook that we have the ability to adapt and learn. Humans of present day do not know how to do the things you describe but the smart ones would learn the necessities and the ones that cannot adapt would die.

I wouldn't consider humanity a part of the food chain. More like outside of it, feeding on most other parts of it. That's not normal food chain behaviour.

We're the only species which could destroy the planet if we want to.
Of course we're top of the food chain.
We can also work better in packs because we have language. We can devise tactics and issue commands to comrades.
Even if we had no modern technology, we're so smart we could just improvise and begin to recreate what we had. Within minutes we'd have bow and arrows; within months we might have swords; within years we'd have guns again.

Animals can't think. If there was something like a great disease that wiped out 99% of us, humans would still be the top of the food chain. Because ultimately as a race we convince ourselves that it's adapt or die, survival of the fittest, and there are those among us who are both fit, and fucking smart to boot.

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
The fact that our domination of the planet is due to our development of technology doesn't subtract from the validity of it. Technology is a characteristic of our species which gives us an advantage over others. It's like saying that tigers don't count as being so highly dominant in certain environments because they only achieved this dominance through their physical characteristics such as their strength.

Technology was just the next step in our evolution, and because of it we will evolve at a stupidly faster pace than any other species also we are so far atop the food chain that we only need a certain percentage of us to feed the rest of us. Most people will never have to travel further than the local market to "gather" food.

I grow the vast majority and hunt the meat.
I like to take people along for hunts so they know where we came from. Gives them a bit more respect for the world around them.

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
Technology? Most of you do not even understand the engineering of the computer you are typing on.
Language? Most living today can barely even speak. Ebonics, internet lingo, hip hop, the disinterest with literature and philosophy. You can organize about as well as you could with hand gestures.
The power to use technology exists in a community; congregations of scientists, and mechanical engineers - together - hold those reigns. Technology is such a power that is difficult to control and work with, it requires a massive group effort, it must be coordinated. It is senseless to consider the random guy with a gun to possess anything like "technology." No. He has been empowered by those that do posses, ie. understand technology.
So are humans really that great? Or are they just empowered?

Wrong.Animals can think. Look it up.
Everyone might as well stop saying the same thing.
Yes. we are the top because we could adapt the fastest.
You can attribute technology as an extension like a has its wings and a turtle has its shell.

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
1, we do have technology (obviously)
2, Even if we didn't we would'nt just die out, there are people capable of catching/gathering food that doesn't include picking a box of cheerios from the shelf.
3, Lets just say something happened and we lose all our technology and forget that we ever had it, slowly we would regain it through accidents, trial and error and eventually we would have some technology again.
4, It might be a stretch but do you think our language and communication skills count as technology?
(sorry for stating the obvious)

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
We (The human race) have developed technology through use of our brains, This helps us survive and adapt to different conditions/keep people alive/feed ourselves etc. A tiger has developed its killing through using its claws, This helps it to survive/feed itself. Granted our technology is more useful than a tiger's claws but saying where would we be without technology/what would happen if we didn't have technology would be like saying what would a tiger be like with no claws or even teeth.
I think the question at hand would be something more like:
What would the human race be like without as extensive use of their brains?

Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
Correct, although if we have to be all technical and such, it's not for the reasons you mention, although I agree - we could've had a much more effective design.
However much I hate the expression "top of the food chain", occasionally I'll use it myself, when I'm speaking with someone who doesn't understand that the food chain looks like this:
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p124/Arachnoholic/TEST/FOODCHAIN.jpg
There's no top and bottom, as we die (for whatever reason) we're consumed by other organisms which in turn are consumed by other organisms, and so on.
It's all just a big circle.
This is just some bullshit i thought up, but it makes sense. Think about it, many animals can work in pack more efficiently than us. Sure we are far more intelligent, but most people won even kill an animal, prepare it and eat it. Some won't even choose the live animal they eat. Some don't even eat meat. Yup, as a species, we're technologically more advanced than any other species on the planet, and we've managed to adapt in record time (we've only been around a few million years) the only thing I can think of that adapts faster is viruses via mutation, but then again, a virus is not typically considered a living organism.
It's also true that we're not worth much without all the gizmo's we've invented, the big cats (except the cheetah) have sharp retractable claws, sharks have a formidable sense of smell, spiders can make silk, and birds of prey can spot the tiniest mouse from a great distance...
But we still have opposable thumbs, and (at least some of us), quite effective brains.
And those thumbs and brains enable us to create and use more elaborate and complex tools than any other species, and that's why we've managed to populate the entire planet minus Antarctica, but who'd want to live there anyway...
If you take away the Tiger's claws etc. those animals won't be worth much either, but the probability of that happening isn't exactly high - there's a much higher probability that we'll end up without our technology, and in the days, weeks, and months after that happening, lots of us will succumb, we won't be totally beat...
The way I see it, is that we're not the "greatest invention" ever, but we aren't totally negligible and incompetent either...

Humans are great. We empower ourselves. It doesn't matter if some individuals don't fully comprehend the technology that they possess. As a whole, the human race understands that technology. So even if some guy with a gun didn't understand how it worked, he could still learn how. That's what separates humans from all other animals. Our ability to learn and comprehend faster than anything on this planet. Even if our techology was magically taken away, we would still survive and dominate this planet.

Sure we have guns and technology, but what if we had no guns, or modern technology. 21st century humans would die, straight out. Thought opinions? *prepares for flaming*

Okay, if I'm not on top, what is?

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
Yes but it could take a while. Especially since obesity is a major problem in some countries, and most people can't run so fast as to catch an animal and stab it. Sure people who are good with the javelin could get some, but what about the people who literally depend on technology like disabled people. Wave bye-bye to Steven Hawkins. Yes we used our primal instincts to get to the top, but we have los touch with these awesome instincts.
you're more of an idiot than your first two posts in this thread suggested...

Humans are "top 'o' the food chain" because we have the ability to kill everything else on earth. At one time.

No necessarily. It's our ability to process our thoughts into action (such as using our opposable thumbs to build and operate a rifle, or our tongues and voiceboxes for verbal communication) which sets us apart.

Close...
But not quite.
It's survival of whatever trait is most beneficial in whatever environment is currently prevalent.
Sometimes brain trumps brawn, sometimes brawn trumps brain.

the ability to use tools and think is part of our nature...not a seperate entity. Also, the top of the food chain means we have no predators above us...We don't, how often are you afraid of being eaten? Exactly, we are the top of the food chain, most independent? No.
But we are at the top undeniably.

Sometimes brain trumps brawn, sometimes brawn trumps brain.
Evolution isn't about "sometimes", its about overall. Overall, the human brain trumped every other organism on earth regardless of how vicious and mighty they where.

Re: Humans are NOT "top 'o' the food chain"
The better questions is, "Who empowered humans? Humans, or something else?".
Humans have empowered humans through the ability to pass on knowledge.
For an entire population to be able to organize together, to move forward as a group and continue to grow even as hundred of years pass and generation after generation live and die. To retain that knowledge and pass it on to future generations is a wonderful gift. Intelligence, everyone says, places us over the other animals. True, to some extent but much more important is our ability to communicate to future generations.

Countless other species do this too, high intelligence is the only major trait unique to humans and the one that put us on top.
