How has Windows Vista ruined your dreams?
Well, I was all excited about getting my new laptop and set right out to install all my old software I used on XP. Then I got to installing AVID Xpress DV and behold it isn't supported by vista. Looks like I'm stuck editing video on my old piece of shit desktop. Thanks Vista.
Has anyone else run into similar compatability problems with EXPENSIVE and USEFUL software they used to use on XP? Looks like I'll have to invest in Adobe Premiere for my editing needs.
edit: oh yeah, before someone points out the obvious, I know that I should've gotten a Mac since I'm into video editing but alas, I was more along the affordable line of computers.

Re: How has Windows Vista ruined your dreams?
I kind of think that if I payed $xx.xx amount of money on software then the least they can do is update their software when a new Os comes out.
Sort of bitching and moaning if you expect Microsoft to catalog every program ever created and make it Vista compatible.
I mean, you bought Vista based on your needs. Should of checked to see if your programs were compatible first.
As for the topic...
Most of the software I've used has been compatible. I had a problem with Final Fantasy 11 but they provided a patch for Vista.
...That's about it.

AVID is top of the line editing software.. Xpress DV is a cheaper version for more straightforward editing for academic purposes. Most movie studios and TV studios use AVID.
There isn't going to be a patch for the software. I'm just mega-bummed out because I'm not in the mood to drop hundreds of dollars on new software. What I'm using is $500 with a student discount. It's also impossible to get a cracked version of a newer version of the software because it requires a dongle (usb key) to run it.
From what I've read it isn't a Windows thing after all. I guess I'm stuck in a money-making scheme of the company to get schools to upgrade to their new software.

If only I had an XP disk I'm also not too computer savvy really. I'm just a software geek.

Re: How has Windows Vista ruined your dreams?
There are plenty of XP cd's you can torrent.
The good thing about Vista is that it has a tool where you can actually lower the Partitioned space you allocated in the beginning of your installation.
That means that if you decide you want to dual boot with XP, you can just lower Vista, then install it on the free space on your HDD.
XP doesn't have that tool. You would have to actually reformat everything and create 2 partitions to dual boot another OS.
My brother is in the process of doing this to his PC so he can run FFXI on the old Graphics Card Driver for XP, then run higher graphics games like TF2, Crysis, COD4 on the newer NVIDIA/Vista Graphics Drivers.

Re: How has Windows Vista ruined your dreams?
It ruined my dreams because I had to confirm twice, TWICE!! that I, indeed, did want to create a new folder. And since I was organizing a couple gigabytes of photoshop plugins at the time... let's use an analogy. George Bush said once that he is the "decider".
I'm the confirmer. I fucking confirm things. I fucking confirm file operation, after file operation, oh wait Vista needs your permission to continue, confirm file operation, confirm file operation.
Then I went to actually put the plugins in their other wise empty folders.

UAC has saved my ass a couple times from getting viruses/spyware.
I leave my UAC on and turn off all the other security settings on my account.
I only need to confirm my operations once on a select few executable files and folders.
If it's such a pain in the ass, turn on Super Admin settings and you wont have a problem.
Vista assumes that since you didn't turn on Super Admin settings you're like the majority of idiots out there with a computer. You have no idea how to use one so it has to hold your hand the whole time so you don't fuck it up.

Re: How has Windows Vista ruined your dreams?
Other than Nero not working, I have no issues with Vista. Hell, Nero even works now I think with vista.
Do a little research, learn how to fix the things that bug you. They made vista "stupid proof" (IE confirm everything prompt) to people with an ID107 issue whom need their hand held through doing anything. If you're so clever and witty enough to bash an OS for something like that, then you should be able to learn how to turn it off pretty easily.
As for there being no pirated current version of your software due to "needing a USB key" - Do you REALLY think something like that will stand in the way of piracy? Just for my own personal amusement, I looked at avids website, looked for their current version of xpress pro - Current version is 5.8
Now a quick google search from a reliable and popular torrent website came up with...oh my god, could it be?! A pirated version of the "non-piratable" Avid Xpress Pro 5.8?!
Now I probably can't post a link to it here, so why don't you try searching "AVID Xpress DV torrent" in Google, and click on the first link - I think it has something to do with some sort of pirate bay
And lastly....get someone who is computer savy to dual boot your system so you can have vista and xp on there so you can still use your software.
Not trying to be a dick but shit - do a little research before you come ranting and raving about things.
