Default Girls and Fraternities at College

I am apprehensive about posting this after reading those "Things that guys/girls do..." threads which rapidly broke down into flame fests, however, I would like to discuss fraternities and their ability to attract hot girls in the college university environment.

I recently finished my freshman year at an average liberal arts school in a very typical place to go to college, the midwest. At my school, frats were by no means the only place to party, but for freshmen, it certainly was, which I understand is true almost everywhere. This topic came to mind when I was surfing facebook earlier and I checked a cute girl who I hooked up with earlier this year's profile. She is the hottest girl that I have ever hooked up with, but looking at her pictures and wall, etc on facebook, it would seem that I am pretty much the only guy who she knows who does not belong to a fraternity. Looking at the clowns she did hang out with, made me a little angry. And so I asked myself, why do fraternities get girls?

At college, one of the most important things you learn is to socialize and one aspect of this is the party environment. Fraternities, of course, have the ability to throw parties very often and everyone knows this. Therefore, I figure that it is practically hardwired into girls when they arrive at college, that if they want to meet people, going to fraternity parties is a surefire way to do so. Of course, the anxiety of being in a house filled with drunken strangers often leads these unexperienced females to drink to calm down, talk more, "fit in," stop worrying about their appearance, etc. And this leads to the typical frat-boy score. So basically what I am saying is, frat + booze + unexperienced girls = one obvious answer to my question.

Frats control the ability to have parties and distribute booze, which I assume (starting to tie in some PUA ideas) gives them higher value over your average unassociated male. This is attractive for girls? and of course, two major incentives for guys to join frats. But this is where my understanding starts to get fuzzy...

When guys join frats, it gives them the above mentioned powers, but it also limits it them, does it not? Joining a frat would seem to strip male of many desirable characteristics. Frat boy becomes their identity and how can they be oh-so-desirable "alpha male" when they are forced to conform and do nasty shit just to join? Polo Shirt and khakis their uniform -- uniform = identical, consistent. I thought uniqueness was attractive? Peacock theory, no?

But then the one thing that gets me most, it's somewhere in Mystery Method or The Game (Im not talking about the tactics of those books, just the theory), is that often males who are very successful with women are often mocked, made fun of, ridiculed, etc by males who are less successful with women. Case in point, I had a suitemate who joined a fraternity, but who always acted extremely flamboyant and liked to dress in a bizarre, but expensive manner. We actually thought he was gay before he even considered joining a frat, but by the end of the year he knew dozens of hotties and even fucked a few of them!

I guess I am not really confused by why frat boys get hot girls. The average explanation is that the girls who fuck frat boys are: dumb, money grubbing, alcoholic/cokehead, vain, etc. But, being bored, I would appreciate it if a few of you fellow totseans could give me some psychological explanations. Any takers?

Yeah, but the people at frats are retards.

It's beautiful when I TA and I watch the frat guys come in as a group and all receive their failures.

Plus they get mediocre ass at best, just the random sorrority sluts.

I will explain to you why some girls like frat guys, it's simple they have the group behind them.

The best parties i've been to were not thrown by frats but by a group of buddies, we took out 3 floors of a hotel.

Plus frat guys are fucking noobs at drinking.

Me and four of my buddies have defeated random frats from all over ontario in drinking games.

If you want to become a drinking beast/party animal hang out with the right people.

Default Re: Girls and Fraternities at College

Its part of a social image/style/manner. There are other ways to slip into a "style" like that as your friend did dressing weirdly. Your social worth, your social status............is what says it.

Its almost like a huge posering fest. Girls know to go to frat houses/mess with frat guys for a good time or for partying. Its just textbook facts.....I had some bitch telling me about this frat house and how she always wanted to go party there....when its not really her type of "scene". Its just like jumping on the bandwagon type of thing, one does it they all do it. Same thing with fashion and current trends in society....the way things work.

Use it to your advantage, go to them, get laid..simple as that.

I'd definitely join a fraternity if I was in an American university. I know there's probably a ton of idiots in them, but I'd still cash in on the party aptmosphere (is that misspelt? Firefox is telling me it is..) and having an easy going social life.

I wouldn't snub those who weren't in it, but it seems like a good way of getting to meet people and party.

I joined a fraternity this spring (Delta Upsilon, Rochester chapter) and can 100% validate the OP's claim that girls come to us to party, and most of them are alcoholics. They are great for sex, but our parties are the LAST place I look for a girl to be in a relationship with. When we aren't partying or drinking, they're attracted to us because of the overall fun, laid back atmosphere. As far as my social life goes, joining DU is far and away the best decision I've ever made.

I have no idea what you're talking about with the frat "uniforms" and shit, I think somebody needs to stop watching shows like that 'GREEK' bullshit. Maybe it's different at other places, but as far as we're concerned individuality is prized, not repressed. Brotherhood =/= conformity.

To the poster who said fraternity guys are retards: The average GPA for our chapter is a 3.21. If anyone's average drops below 2.5, they have one semester to get it back up, or face debrotherment. That said, you have to be borderline genius to even get into UofR. I graduated saludatorian from high school with a 94.6 average (4.0 GPA). I got a 1410 out of 1600 on my SATs and have an IQ of 138, all that, and my cumulative GPA in uni is a 2.92, and I work my fucking ass off just for that.

It's not a bullshit society and you develop a sense of camaraderie.

Me, I'm joining in September. All the people I know have done so and have gone through college, never regretting the experience. Many remain friends even after their post-collegiate years.

That, is one of the most utterly ignorant generalizations I've ever heard about both fraternities and football players. One of my closest friends on the football team is a chemical engineering major, and his GPA is higher than mine.

8 biomedical engineers, 2 Chemical engineers (I'm one of them), 10 Mechanical engineers, 2 comp. sci, 3 optics, 5 various economics, 3 BCS (brain and cognitive science) and 4 math majors. And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. There are a handful of bullshit things like political science and psychology majors, of course, but we're like 80% science/engineering. That's what UofR is all about so it's not that surprising. "Course load" my ass. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

EDIT: I notice you're from Canada. That explains a lot. Don't get me wrong I love Canada and Canadians in general, but I've heard some awful stuff about Canadian fraternities. The DU chapter in Toronto just parties ALL the time, it's pretty much what they do. They come here and are disappointed because we don't get drunk on Monday nights. That may be all well and good in Canada, but at least in Rochester we realize that we need to get our money's worth out of our fucking $46,000/year education.

I think it really depends where the frat is located. At my school there isn't a huge "greek" life and the frat guys are pretty much failure. The only reason to go to frat parties is to drink their booze, beat them at beer pong, and laugh at them before stealing shit and leaving.
However I did go visit a friend down at San Diego State and the frat life there was just disgusting. Her friends would go out every night to frat row and bang 1-3 dudes each night. It was seriously nauseating. We'd walk into a party and immediately be converged upon by guys offering us as much booze and drugs as we'd want. I stayed sober that weekend, not trying to get roofied.
Pretty much I assume that the girls who regularly live the "frat life" either like the free alcohol/drugs, or the enjoy the male attention.

As I feared, this thread has basically broken down into a classic, totse apples vs oranges flame fest:

"fratz r teh gay. im not in 1 & i drink a lot"
"no, ur a nub, im in a frat & its gr8."

Im mean, this is totse, I knew it would happen, I just wish...

My question was why frats are so consistent in attracting girls when they seem to go against common theories about getting chicks. A few of you have provided interesting input which has led me to begin to re-evaluate what I look for in girls. Maybe I should seek out non-mainstream girls seeing as I dont consider myself mainstream. The problem I see with this is, I do want a good looking mate and consider it vital. But the solution to this cannot be found on teh internet, which a lotta people seem to ignore.

All I can say is LOL. The fact that you feel you can pass judgment on somebody you've never meant says a lot about your personality. Maybe if you weren't so socially inept you would have some friends, and maybe you would understand, but that's clearly not the case. UofR is one of the most difficult universities in the entire nation. The workload is enormous, and the tests really do TEST you. We're not talking about memorizing some formulas, you actually have to put in serious effort and know the material inside and out. It's a lot of fucking work. I actually want an education, unlike whatever idiots you TA for.

In hindsight I'm not exactly sure why I wasted my time justifying myself to you with an argument that's clearly going to fall on deaf ears. You're probably just going to come back with some "witty" remark, calling me a dumbass again or something like that, forever proving to all of totse what a superior human being you are. May I use this opportunity to say that tests are the most retarded form of examination ever (I mean the kind of "pick one of four answers" or "write down the answer right here and that's the only thing we'll check" tests).

Oral examination > written examination > everything else > tests. Especially in technical sciences.

(Sorry for a completely unrelated message).

I wasn't ranting about you, sorry if I didn't make that clear. Just ranting about how the governments everywhere seem to be thinking that multichoice standardised tests are a good idea.

Also, when I say oral examinations, I mean writing your answer down first, then going through it with an examiner explaining what, where and why. Why I think it's the best form of examination, is because it gives the examiner a good feel of how deep the student knows the subject, gives him a chance to probe as deep as he wants while also questioning other related topics, etc.

Of course, one could say that this gives more room for bribery, cheating and unjust marks (with it being more difficult to pass with one examiner than with another one); but in my opinion it's not really about the marks, it's about the knowledge; and during these kind of exams you sometimes end up having interesting discussions with the examiners, proving your point that the examiner disagrees with etc. - all in all I think these kind of exams not only allow the examiner to fully assess the student's knowledge and way of thinking, but the student can learn some stuff during the exam as well, which I think is pretty good.

Anyway, sorry, I digress again.

Frat boy becomes their identity and how can they be oh-so-desirable "alpha male" when they are forced to conform and do nasty shit just to join? Polo Shirt and khakis their uniform -- uniform = identical, consistent. I thought uniqueness was attractive? Peacock theory, no?

The way I see it, homogeneous guys attract homogeneous girls.

i wrote this long response and realized it was mostly all bullshit. i joined a frat (ACACIA) and it's been the funnest shit i've ever experienced in my life. i wouldn't trade all the shit i've gotten to do or the people i've met for a fucking 4.0. and everyone that bitches in mostly a hater and doesn't have half as much fun as greeks do. they think they do but they have noooooooooo idea

i agree with this guy i would have been perfectly happy being on academic probation this next year with the amount of fun i've had.

Do you plan on applying to grad school or anything after that?

the only people that even need high GPAs are pre-meds anyway, and maybe those that plan on going to grad school, which is a vast minority. I plan on getting my chemE masters, doing LOTS of internships and stuff, and jumping into my career after college. Employers don't give a fuck about GPA, they want experience and ability.

Just as you said you didn't feel you had to justify anything to me, you did anyways. Just as you said you couldn't believe how I stereotyped you, you fucking stereotyped me. Just because my grades are high doesn't nessecarily mean I don't have any friends or a life. Just because you got into some "prestige" school doesn't mean you are anything special - it just means you are a moron. You are paying probably triple I am for the same information if not more. And you know what's even more funny? You probably got there through a sport scholarship, because God knows academic scholarships are more rare than finding a $100 bill in a sand box. Just because mommy and daddy are paying your tuition to a "bigger, better" school doesn't mean you are getting anything more special. You are just getting raped, and people like me sit back and just laugh at you. So drink your beer, fuck your frat-magnet chicks, and pull thousands of dollars out of your ass a semester. I hope it's worth it for you :)

I didn't stereotype you because you have high grades, I stereotyped you because you seem to despise anyone that has any kind of established social circle. Also, there are only a handful of accredited universities in the area that offer chemical engineering as a major, and this one gave me the best financial aid. I would have been more than happy to go to a cheaper state school if they offered chemE... but... they dont, sadly. However, that doesn't mean I shouldn't be proud of my institution or my fraternity. It is most certainly worth it, I assure you. :)

it totally depends on the fraternity.

A large one is going to attract nothing but whore's from the sluttiest underbelly of the Sorority community (and I know this, Im in a fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega)

But honestly, the one I joined was relatively small (so small we actually lost our charter last semester :-/). We attracted the good girls, the ones you'd start a relationship with and eventually marry (happened to 2 of our former brothers, both married/are marrying Sigma Kappas)

The larger ones on campus are.

A. Harder to get into, IE they haze, alot.
B. They are composed of mostly dicks. There will be very few people you like.
C. Attract dirty dirty whores. The "toasters" if you will (a toaster is a girl who has fucked 5 or more brothers of a fraternity).

Its up to you which one you want to join, go for quality and join a smaller one, or go for the name, and join a bigger one.

AND FYI, joining a smaller fraternity DOES NOT mean that they are small nation wide. ATO is one of the largest fraternities in the nation ;-)

Seriously, school here is 6 grand a year. You pay 46,000? No fucking wonder you've got so many school shootings down there. Cho was just pissed his check bounced.

And yeah, I don't go out every night but I'm at my pub 3 days a week minimum, usually in between classes.

Being drunk and lazy is awesome.

And frats are nothing more than a bunch of guys getting together so they can be drinking buddies.

Even if you're the most socially awkward guy in your frat, you have a not half bad chance at making out with the girl you take to formal, or taking a girl to your formal heavily increases your chances of getting with her.

Seriously. This is 100% true. I know that sounds weird, but from my experience, it's pretty much true.

A lot of people talk shit about the greek system.... like paying for friends or stupid shit like that... but who are their friends the people who say that? Hmmm... their peers, the other people who paid 5k to go to university. It's all the same, non greeks are just weird in that they don't realize it's the same thing, and that the money paid to the association pays for running fees, the house, etc etc.

Anyways, yea you do get sluts in sororities... no one is going to lie about that, so if you're a guy go for it. But I guareentee you the best liked guys in the frats and the best liked girls in the sororities are not the ones who only care about getting laid and drinking, they are the ones who really care about the sister/brotherhood, and care bout the other events, etc.

So basically I'm saying, don't just join for the bitches if you're a guy, there's more to it than that.

FUCK OFF. This isn't the army, there is no camaraderie, it's just a bunch of guys splitting the cost of rent, helping each other cheat, and getting wasted all the time.

There's nothing else than that. A lot of people in frats hate each other, and they're hardly people you'd trust. Just get over it. People in college aren't mature enough to be trusted with "brotherhood" and similar shit.

I didn't read all of the posts on this thread, but what I'm about to say probably has been said before. Guys in a frat do get to bang some average looking, low self esteem girls. You are correct that they lose their individuality because one of the things about being in a frat is conforming to the frat itself. But all that shit stops when the frat member either drops out of college from being a dumb ass or if the frat member even graduates. After college, all that shit disappears and its every man for himself.

Unless a person belongs to one of those frats that only take in prestigious wealthy family members, frat members are usually shit out of luck after college. I've been out of college for 3 years now. Since then I've seen 5 frat members who were in the same General Ed classes as I was. I don't know what they majored in, but I hope it was Food Service. Each time I see a frat member that used to be a former classmate, they are always waiters at a TGIFridays or a Chevys or something.

It makes me kind of feel sorry for them. Even while I was working as a college student, I was a bartender. I know waiters don't get tipped like bartenders. Waitresses barely get tipped like bartenders. Guys in frats seem to have really low expectations for their lives. Or just the frat guys that went to my college, at least.

I just looked a few posts above mine and saw this. This is probably why frat members drop out or just don't go on after college excelling in careers that have to do with their majors. They were probably stuck in this mentality instead of thinking about what the college degree, they or their parents (most likely parents) are paying for, can do for them. It always puzzled me to see people failing classes and just flunking out of college. College is not cheap. Why waste all that money?

I still don't get what frats are for. It seems that everything that frats offer you kind of get automatically when you become a student in the rest of the world.

I mean, all the students in an university/college normally share a sense of community, and you can always go chill with students from other institutions.

the only people that even need high GPAs are pre-meds anyway, and maybe those that plan on going to grad school, which is a vast minority. I plan on getting my chemE masters, doing LOTS of internships and stuff, and jumping into my career after college. Employers don't give a fuck about GPA, they want experience and ability.

I'm not a Chemical Engineer, but I am a Biochemist. Lab chemist, not scientist (as you said, small minority actually go to grad school after the first 4 years). GPA does matter. When you interview at stable companies, you find out why they are stable. They don't hire dumb asses that will fuck everything up. They will ask for your GPA when you interview. Usually interviews at stable companies go on for several days. So you will be asked more than once.

I doubt the people who interviewed you will double check what you told them your GPA was, but I know for a fact that the hiring manager and the HR person involved with the hire will check it. I've interviewed several people since I've been at my current job. 2 of them would have made really good coworkers from what I've heard from them. But HR wouldn't let us hire them because their GPA was either too low or they just flat out lied about their GPA. I tried to make the case for them by saying, "So fucking what? Most of the shit you need to know about science related jobs are learned on the job, not in a class."

But who the fuck am I to question a company that has survived economic depressions unscathed?

That frat members are more focused on getting pussy and drinking rather than studying for those midterms and finals they failed. I'm not talking about all frat members. I'm just talking about the ones I've seen when I was in college. To be able to even go to college is something to be appreciated. The vast majority of the world's population is shit out of luck because opportunities like college is nothing more but a dream to them. To lose focus over the tremendous opportunities one opens up for oneself is pretty negligent.

Yeah. I'm not going to lie, on my campus there's probably a 50-50 split between the fraternities that are like the ones you know, and the ones that realize life beyond college is actually important. This is clearly reflected in their behavior and the type of people that join. The "stupid" frats don't give a shit about academics, and haze pledges by doing shit like holding them in the house for a whole week during midterms and stuff.

Well... I think I actually highlighted in my post that you shouldn't join frats and sororities to drink.... anyways

I can't necessarily attest to frats and hazing, because I'm in a sorority and we do not haze, but what I find is a large amount of people at least in mine want to do grad school. Im still in school, but the people who graduated half are going to grad school. I'm going to grad school, and honestly, the people I like best in the group are also going to grad school.

Actually I think I'm just as bias as you, where I don't really associate the dumb ones who only want to party, but I do like the ones who study and party. And they exist... because all you non greek people study and go to the clubs on the weekend and such. What I'm trying to say is that it's no different, and you can't really judge all greek people because in any setting their are going to be the idiots. The thing that is important about the greek system is if you think they get drunk too much, or are stupid, or are this, there is this common thread and you become friends in association with athletics, or common classes, or non alcoholic social events.

I'm just saying though people totally get trashed sometimes, they also study. I dunno maybe it's different in Canada than the states because we're not as... hardcore? But yea.
