So I have posted maybe twice within the last two weeks about this same topic, however they have been very vague questions for I didn't tell the whole story. As you would know if you read my threads, I have recently started working at a local mexican restaurant for the summer, and absolutely love it. I knew from the beginning that it was going to be a big step for both me and my boss, seeing as I would be not only the first female server (because none of the women there can speak english) but also the first white employee. I had a huge awakening the first day to how big of a deal this was because almost every patron that came in that day made a huge scene about it.

However, while everyone else found it such a shock that I would work there I thought (and still think) it was amazing. Little did I know that it would get complicated two weeks into the job. One of the employees at the restaurant has a crush on me and me on him, and it has been building over this two week period. He's the youngest employee there, and he's the one I can most relate to age wise. We hang out on breaks, flirt, and have fun while we are not busy or working. Someo f the other workers have picked up on my flirtateous side and started doing some flirty things (most are in their early thirties). Well, the boss started picking up on my crushs attempts (we were literally sitting in the break room booth sharing an iPod) and quickly tried to put an end to it, saying that "he knew my mother" and other things in Spanish. Now, he's basically not allowed to converse or be within a ten foot radius of me at all times. He will not make eye contact with me while the boss is in the restaurant and he stands on the opposite side of the restaurant while working. Meanwhile, all of the other workers are still being as flirty, if not more, around my boss and they don't get repromanded.

With that said, I am so perplexed as to how this situation makes sense to my boss. Why can the older workers essentially hit on me but the youngest can't? Why does my boss have to act like my fucking dad? I understand it is his job to protect me in work situations, however I am 19 and should be able to pursue whomever I choose. Is this about me crossing cultures and getting involved with someone of a different race? If so, why is it such a big deal to my boss for me to cross cultures? One of the biggest concerns he had when hiring me was if I had enough of an open mind to work in this environment, and now he's the one that's closed minded? Does this have anything to do with a cultural misunderstanding? What do I do? Can I say anything to change it?

Save it for after work. And you shouldn't have been so obvious in the first place.

Although it's bullshit, your boss has MAJOR bullshit backing that neither of you have. For one, he's the employer, you are the employee. He can fire for whatever he wants (you're still within that probation period if I remember correctly). Secondly, nearly every place of business has "no fraternizing" policy, which in some places I suppose would be legitimate, in your situation, it's be more of a formal thing. But that's besides that point. Who knows what his motivation is, but you have to make a decision.

You need to accept this as the terms of your job and not flirt with this guy at your job, keep it outside of work. Or you need to find another job. You're the white girl, you can find a job A LOT easier than your amigo friend. You don't want to get him fired.

I know it sucks, but shit ain't fair. ESPECIALLY in the hierarchies of business.

The one thing my employers have always hated the most is when I've been distracted by girls. They see romantic interest between their employees as the situation that will be most distracting to job performance.

I can't say I really disagree, because when I've worked with attractive girls in my lower paying jobs in high school, I was certainly always trying to talk to them and not do work.


Don't be mad at your boss, but instead try to not make it obvious. Or, better yet, just do the job he's paying you for, and hang out with this kid after work. It's a pretty easy solution, no need to panic about it.

Oh, and the reason he only cares about this particular guy and not the older guys is because he realizes they have no chance, or at least not as much as this guy does, to seriously distract you and impair your performance.

For fuck sakes, you were told a hundred times in your last thread not to pull this shit.

You are putting not only your own job, but that of this other guy's as well, on the line.

Stop being a selfish bitch. Plus, you're a shitty employee. If I were your boss, I'd fire you in a second.

If you're gonna get involved with a co-worker (which is always a bad idea in the first place!), then do it on your own time.

Why the fuck would you want to get involved with a Mexican anyway? Check your pockets next time you're around him and make sure your money/credit card are still there.
