Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
So, every now and then, and especially when I'm homeless, I tend to wander the streets at night and have a nice little look inside the local pharmacies' dumpsters. I know that the odds are always very slim for finding anything, much less something fun, but still....
My best luck has always come from the CVS pharmacy's dumpster. Just about every other empty bottle is Oxy or moprhine or hydros. Unfortunately that's all they are: empty.
but!
there's always a few pills at the bottom of the bag that must have...fallen out? I don't know. The best I ever came up with was a 7.5/500 vicodin and the rest of the pills are invariably cholesterol lowering pills.
But I've got to wonder...why are there any pills there at all? How do they dispose of the pills that allows for some to fall through? Is there any way to maximize the chances of getting something good? Like, certain times?
My hope is that one day I'll find an oxy 20 or 40, rail it right there and fall asleep in the dumpster. :)
anyone have any experience, opinions, suggestions, flames, completely unrelated comments, random images, prose, poetry, anecdotes, statistics, free drugs, etc?

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
I went to a friends house last night and whenever I walked in the room... About 35 huge pill bottles caught my eye. I asked my homeboy which pharmacy he robbed. I started reading on the 500ct bottles, hydromorphone; morphine sulphate IR's; xanax; valium; methadone. My friend told me he went through the pharmacy dumpster and got all of the pill bottles to scrape them with a card. He said he got about 2 pills worth of powder out of each bottle. So we sat there and scraped and scraped and he let me keep the scrapings out of 6 bottles: one was a Valium 10mg; Hydromorphone 2mg; Hydromorphone 4mg; Ms-ir 30mg; Ms-ir 15mg; Percocet 10's... I wound up with about 5 grams of powder, which I snorted on and nodded away the whole day.
Just thought I would let all you guys know if you scrape a 500ct empty bottle of Dilaudid 4 or 8's you will get about 2-3 pills worth of residue.
http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/archive/index.php/t-270169.html
I think I'll try that tonight...what the hell? why not. I can't believe I didn't think of that. but I guess I haven't sunk that low yet. oh well, the night is still young!
from same thread:
Growfh is right, they do throw away any pills that hit the floor. However he left out that at a pharmacy there are two types of trash....the regular kind and the kind that gets picked up at the end of each day (the cans with blue liners in them). Those are where they (are supposed to at least) put any pills that hit the floor or that might be chipped alittle, along with any paper containing private information of customers.
does anyone have any information about these other trash cans? where do they put them? what time do they get picked up? how well are they guarded? why haven't I seen them before?

controlled substances are supposed to be destroyed in front of a witness. you probably got a pill that fell and the cleaners swept up.

then why would it be in the same bag as all the empty bottles? if a cleaner sweeps it up, im sure it goes in the "random trash" bag, not the "empty pharm bottles" bag

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
SwIm did this just to see what WAS in the plastic bags outside of the dumpster.
Lots of scraps of paper & coffee cups and some pills in the bottom of the bag.
Some empty pill bottles of Morphine etc.
The pills were mixed up in the floor sweepings so I guess thats how they ended up in there.
I never figured out what they were, puttem aside, then threw them out.
After about 2 weeks of checking the plastic bags they stopped leaving them beside the bins & now put them inside the locked dumpster.
Probably for the best now.
Oh there was odd makeup, testers & other retail items swIm gave to a chick.

Hmm scraping out the empty pill bottles seems like a good idea if it's as simple as it sounds. Don't they have cameras in back of those places though? I'm sure they would...er...frown upon such behavior...

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
I was once dumpster diving wilst on a lot of valium, me and a buddy found one of those 7 day, pop top pill holders, but it was a 28 container thing... so a months worth of pills... we never opened it, and then lost it... fuck valium.
Damnit!
But yeah, I found dozens of hydromorphone bottles, and that being an instant release pill, there is inevitably powder washed off from pills stuck to the inside of the bottles.
If I had have taken like 5-10 HM bottles and cleaned them out well... I am sure I would have got a fat line of HM out of the deal... look for pill bottles for highly potent instant release opiates... and started a coloured powder collection.

When a pharm tech drops anything on the floor it has to be thrown away in a small bio-hazard bag and recorded. Just look for those bags and hope someone dropped something sweet.

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
I work in a major chain Pharmacy that shall remain un-named....Of course all pharmacies will differ from chain to chain, store to store, and state to state....but for us:
As someone previously stated, when we drop a pill on the floor...it goes in the trash. And you'd be surprised how many we drop. They accumulate in certain areas...for instance; there are large turnstiles that have bins of pill bottles and caps ect. right near where we count. It's pretty common to drop a pill into one of those, and it's a pain to fish them out so we just leave them. Also, they accumulate in the bottom of our script-pro machine, which is a large cabinet looking device with a robotic arm that automatically dispenses the most common drugs, including controls.
Usually when we drop a pill in a hard to reach area (which is often), it just gets left there, and will be sweeped up sometime later and thrown in the trash...regardless of whether it's a control or not...If we drop it someplace where it's easy to pick up, we will pick it up and throw it in the trash, but usually we're more focused on getting the hundreds of scripts we fill each day done on time...
Also most pill bottles have a little plastic thing with a dessicant in it to keep the pills dry/fresh or what not...it's pretty common to leave like 1 pill in the bottle by accident after dumping it out onto a tray, thinking that it's the little plastic deal (a lot of times the plastic deal will block the mouth of the bottle making you think you dumped them all out but actually theres 1 or 2 left).
I should point out that "controls" are the "lower" level controlled substances, stuff like valium or vicodin, ect. The "higher" level controlled substances like oxycotin ect are considered "narcs" and are kept in a safe. Only the pharmacist can dispense these, and the pharmacists are much better about keeping them off the floor.
I should point out that as a pharmacy we have "special" trashcans everywhere to dispose of anything that has a patients personal information on it. These are kept locked up at all times and are carted away by a special trash company. 90% of the time we throw the empty pill bottles and dropped pills in there...but I'm sure some end up in the "regular" trash.
So if you "dumster dived" at my pharmacy (and I imagine most places)...you wouldn't end up with much....maybe one or two 1mg ativans and a stray vicodin, and assorted random pills. Maybe a few empty bottles of controls/narcs that you could scrape.
Overall I'd say the payoff is not worth the risk of being caught...but if you think it's worth it, go for it....

What do you guys consider percocets, controls or narcs? Also, how often do they drug test you and how hard would it be for you to swipe small or large amounts of pills without getting caught?
Sounds like a job with the company that collects your trash would be an awesome opportunity since they probably collect the trash from every pharmacy in town.
How do you guys dispose of expired controls/narcs? I assume you guys only order as many as you project you'll sell, so, how many do you guys throw away?

I know how it is.
Anyways. I've done a bunch of dumpster diving in my day, but have never thought of a pharmacy. I'm going to try this next time I'm on the streets and see what I can find.
On another note, what about Nursing home dumpsters? It might not be worth looking since it would be mostly full of old person diapers. Maybe hospital dumpsters would yield good results? These people have more volunteer and inexperienced staff that are less likely to follow proper drug disposal procedures.

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
K comes in vials, as a liquid. No powder to scrape.
Yeah but when things sit in a 100 degree and above dumpster all day things tend to evaporate granted the cap is off or hole allowing air to flow in

What I meant is that it's a lot easier to get all the liquid out of a vial than it is to get all the powder out of a container. There wouldn't even be any leftover liquid to evaporate.

This DOES sound like a good idea.
To those bitching about not being desperate enough:......Actually.......Yeah, it does sound SOMEWHAT desperate. I just wouldn't like to do this due to stinky garbage.
Wait, are pharmacy dumpsters that dirty/smelly, or is it mostly boxes and bottles and other non-smelly things?

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
no, all the medical/pharmacy stuff(empty bottles, trash, paperwork...ect..), in the US, is carted away separately. This is true with CVS, wallgreens and Rite aids. Most follow and adhere to strict codes for this shit...
Private pharmacies are more likely to not be as cautious.

That's what I thought. I was surprised to hear that the op's best spot was cvs; I would think they would have more to lose and try to follow the regulations more carefully.

No, the only stuff that HAS to bee carted away specially (by law) is HIPPA stuff...that is anything with a patients personal information on it. Different chains might have different policies...but I have worked in multiple stores for 2 of the 3 chains you mentioned and I can say neither one was strict about empty pill bottles, ect.....just HIPPA info..
It just so happens that we toss most of our empty pill bottles and ect in the "special" trash cans because there's so many around. I toss empty bottles in the "normal" trash all the time...
I work at a "major" pharmacy BTW, one that has been mentioned in the thread....and AGAIN as I said it varies store to store and state to state.
A hint for dumpster divers which I dunno if this was mentioned or goes without saying...but don't neglect the empty LIQUID containers...it's almost impossible to get all the liquid out and if you collect a few empty vicotuss bottles you might be able to catch a good buzz.
As far as EXPIRED or RECALLED drugs go...we collect them and hold on to them. They're counted/weighed ect (strictly for inventory purposes) and sent back to the manufacturer to be destroyed.
I don't remember off the top of my head what they're considered, but WE keep them in the safe. I forgot to mention that's not the only criteria for what we keep in the safe....for instance we keep Cialis and Viagra in the safe even though neither one of those is a controlled substance.
At my store, (and most pharmacies I imagine) there is only a pre-employment drug screen. They send you to an outside contracted lab. This is after the initial interview, they give you the lab paperwork and give you something like 78 hours to go to the lab and take the test.
I cheated on mine by giving them a friend's urine...see the drug testing thread for more info on cheating drug tests, ect.
As far as stealing....I could steal a pill here or there pretty easy without getting caught. I don't do it simply because it's not worth the risk. I have a really good job and I love it and want to keep it...also I have easy enough access to drugs. It's not worth risking for one or two ativan or something.

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
But I've got to wonder...why are there any pills there at all?
I didn't read through the thread, but the pills could have been dropped, which they wouldn't put them back to avoid contamination.

So I tried this at K-mart and found a whole bag of pill bottles. What the hell should I do with them? If these were full it'd be enough pills to keep a whole ghetto doped up.

A better idea is to look through obituaries then check their trash. The family members cleaning up will probably just throw everything out.

Re: Pharmacy Dumpster Diving
What about @ a vet?
They must have to toss the pcp/ket away when its empty.
Anyone given the vet's trash a run through?
Only thing is, they probably don't go through bottles nearly as often as a pharmacy.
Eh, just came into my head...
Speakin' of Vet's, my mother works @ a state veterans home, and i know all the old ppl get controlled subs. of all kind.
Think there dumpster's would be worth a try?
