So is a sig other really needed?
Is it just a natural compulsion for people to want to be with another person?
Honestly having a signifigant other tends to make people happy, but what drives us to go after someone?
Sex?
Babies?
Survival by numbers?

Re: So is a sig other really needed?
I donno really, just lost one kinda that I never really had anyways but..I don't know I tend to, after being really depressed like I am now, go into complete isolation with no contact whatsoever with ANYONE, and just do what interests me (program, hack), I really put myself through complete misery and go to the brink of insanity before I'll start to associate myself with anyone whatsoever. I feel one of these coming on hard now. Anyone else do this? My record for COMPLETE isolation was 6 months, for that whole 6 months my phone was shut off, there was absolutely no way to contact me.
MAybe I'm just weird I donno anyone else do this?? It works out well though, I'm a genius probably because of it :p

Re: So is a sig other really needed?

I've essentially spent the last year in isolation...
Which is weird, because, prior to that, I was like a social butterfly. I was out and about every single day/night.
Now, I spend night after night alone. And I actually don't mind it.
I mean, sometimes I miss my old life, and I do plan on going back to it. But right now, I'm enjoying the solitude.

Totally man, it's like even though I'm in literal hell, I'm in such a twilight that nothing seems real anymore, noone there to remind me that I'm alive and breathing and I fucking love it. I also like to socialize a lot too, I'm shy kinda but I still find it really easy to socialize with people, donno it's weird. But then I realize that people will get me nowhere, since noone knows the things I do, the things I study etc. It's almost like I come back to reality and realize I don't need anyone in my life, only to go on the brink of insanity. But I'm not talking about an essential isolation, I'm talking refusal to talk to ANYONE. It was a lot easier though when I owned my own business and I could work from my house so meh that's all gone now, but I do plan on talking to my old clients, kicking my drug habit (oh noes gotta go to rehab...well I really do, my heroin addiction can't be stopped by will power sadly :\ but yeah, when I say isolation I mean you don't talk to ANYONE.

Clover, for fucks sakes, use paragraphs.
There's no real need for a significant other, but it does add another element to your life which can have positive or negative effects. If you have the time for it, and the confidence to conduct yourself correctly, it can be worthwhile.

Re: So is a sig other really needed?
Not necessarily needed for every individual, but as a rule people typically have a compulsion to be with a significant other due to biological impulses/needs/imperatives and societal pressure to be in a relationship.
Those are the two largest issues, and they go hand in hand. If it was all biology people would just fuck everyone that moved in mindless attempts to reproduce. Society tells us to find ONE (mainstream western society does anyway) partner and be with them only.
Another reason would be a desire to have someone you can be open with, and who you can trust completely. Someone who you can tell anything.
So yeah, it's a mixture of biological, societal, and psychological factors.
Just guessing.

Yeah I'm confused too.
I dont see the point in fuck buddies, really. But I also dont see the point in long term relationships.
I think something in between would be nice. You know, sex ,fun and companionship, but no ridiculous expectations from that person and no demands from them to change your life.#
I get lonely at times, I get times where I feel like if I dont get a guy RIGHT NOW I'm probably going to explode with frustration. Maybe that's just a human instinct. It's easy to overcome though.

Yeah, let's let all our social skills degrade over the course of a year. That sounds like a marvelous idea! I can agree with short terms of isolation, one to three months. However, past that point you are just becoming an unhealthy individual.

Heroin addict? Yeah, you're definitely not a genius.

Yes, it is about being human. Partners should not try to change you, yoyobek you just get shitty men. Probably due to your attitude about life in general.

What really blows my mind is the crazy things some people do to get the girl/guy.
Fuck buddies are very strange it is more or less an impliment to both parties. Long term relationships stress people out also.

Well, I definitely don't need to prove myself to the angsty fatass of SA, nor do I want to.

Re: So is a sig other really needed?
This post is REALLY LONG and mainly about isolation so just read the bottom two paragraphs for the on topic stuff if you want.
Totally man, it's like even though I'm in literal hell, I'm in such a twilight that nothing seems real anymore, noone there to remind me that I'm alive and breathing and I fucking love it.
Yup, I seem to do this too.
The first time I did the whole isolation thing it wasn't because of a girl or lack of, just my severe depression and I did it at a very young age and it's happened again and again over the many years.
When it comes to girls the first time I did it was last summer from only August until about mid Sept.-Oct.
Though the reason I think it lasted so shortly was because of many variables including the intensity of it.
This time was weird, I didn't stay away from people, I surrounded myself in them and in social situations but I don't remember any of it and I was effectively "Away and Isolated" from everyone because I was abusing the shit out Benzos and alcohol. I literally remember almost nothing and it certainly felt like I was alone even while I was actually in the middle of parties and fucking some chick.
I got out of it so quickly and easily because when I quit the benzos I was already surrounded by people and had all these new friends (that I had to sort of meet again) and quickly I found a group of 5 other people I could call my closest friends and it was perfect. Which is how isolation number two came around.
I fell in love with one of the five.
We were insanly in love and rarley spent time apart, she was perfect, we would rail lines of K in sync and drift together, spend long nights (early mornings) wandering the city, spend whole days fucking doing nothing else, we would have the most amazing conversations... :)
Then she ended it.
That was In Feb. and I'm just coming out of my isolation which was so severe it matches some of the worst I pulled during my childhood. I stopped going to school because I couldn't get up from the depression so I really saw no one. I stopped hanging out with my group because it consisted of my new ex, her best friend, her best friend's boyfriends, a kid who I wasn't to fond of but when we were in a group was pretty cool and a guy who I really thought of as my best friend until he betrayed me shortly after she left.
I was alone.
I don't think the isolation was just because she left or that I was depressed about her, her leaving just triggered by inevitable crash (went off my meds in August, I'm bipolar). I only thought of her a lot for the first month or so after that it was just depression, generic style. I still hurt thinking about her, but I can deal.
Within a month I should have stability in a job and I know I'll start finding some old friends or making new ones and soon be into the party life again and having fun :)
Anyways, on topic: I think some people would rather be alone in the longterm, I don't know why, there are probably many reasons. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as they're happy doing that. Why not? We don't need more babies. lol it's getting crowded enough.
I'm not sure because he always seems to have a gf, but I think my brother may be one of these people and just has a gf for the sex. Sure he loves them but I don't think that's enough for him to decide to stay with someone. Who knows, he might find someone he wants to marry, but he's avid that he will never have a child, ever. Says he's getting snipped the second he can and might freeze some sperm "just in case the world needs babies or something that are hot". He's had that stance since he was a little one.
He does have some mental issues but in the mild autistic range, so it makes the whole thing make a bit more sense.
I really feel the need to find a longterm partner, I don't expect her to change me or for her to change for me, just to love and be loved in return, a healthy relationship as much as possible. I really want to have some kids (even though it's against my own logic, the urge is just so strong) and I'd want her to as well. I'll find her someday :)

I also suggest you don't skip his posts, he can be very right sometimes, you can generally tell how useful his post is by how much he's insulting someone. Though sometimes they deserve it. So just use your own judgment.
