Model rocket + High explosive = ?
July 4th has never really been spectacular here in Georgia. Most everything fun is outlawed and I'm not paying for gas to drive anywhere else. Everyone got excited when sparklers and fountains were legalized, but I'm not at all satisfied.
So I devised a plan to use the big model rockets with D engines and booster stages to propel some high explosive at least a mile or two up (too far for the feds to trace it back to me) and start my own big bang.
The problem is that I don't really have anywhere to build or test them. I figured I would need to do some ground tests to make sure that the rocket engine can even ignite the explosive and that the rocket disintegrates entirely in the explosion since I wouldn't want significantly large chunks coming down on people. That's going to be a bitch.
Thoughts?

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
I figured it was Backyard Ballistics since I'm already doing it and I'm pretty positive I can do it without blowing myself up. I'm not asking about the high explosive really, I've visited Bad Ideas enough to know everything I need to for that, but rockets definately fall under this category. Plus, I can probably find someone more knowledgeable about rocketry here than I can in there.

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
Point is: how will loading a high explosive (heavy) into a model rocket where the parachute (light) should be affect the physics? Also, can model rockets indeed be used as an ignition system. I know a little bit about how the rocket engines work, but advice from an expert would be great.
Hey, if it sounds like Bad Ideas to you, move it, delete it, or do whatever you have to. All I've done is posed a question.

Lol.
The propellant will probably be heavier than the actual HE. :D
Put a flash powder comp between the HE and the propellant. Whoosh -> boom -> big boom.

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
it is impossible i will tell you that much ... unless you want to spend hundreds of dollars on D class engines .. because you will have to have a tub about 3.5 inch dia with about 3.5 - 4 feet of hieght then you have to take into consideration were your putting the explosive in the rocket the weight up front with toss of your center of gravity and center or pressure then take into account the weight of your propelent and the weight of the tube to get any worth wild amount of high order explosive 2 miles into the air to be able to watch and hear you would need roughly by my quick calculation 18 D12-0 class engines (2stage) with a standard through wall fin design at 3 inch / 4.5 feet tall with a standard BT-80-OGIVE nose cone you can get away with about 300 grams of HE about 4.5 inch from the top of the second stage and get about 3/4 a mile with descent stability
cheers

BI taught you about explosives? What are you gonna put in there, match heads? Oh wait, HIGH explosives, so you must mean ammonium nitrate soaked in gas and lit on fire right?
Fucking kids.

Just do this http://krimzonpyro.com.ve.carpathiahost.net/rat/devices/skyrocket.html
Just put a HE comp in the egg.

This is why i love BB.
And yes, i lurk here daily. I dont do much with pyro anymore (hope to start again in a few years) and this has to be one of the most well-educated subforums on Totse.

Well, it could work.
Placing the match heads (lulz) between the fuel (kno3/sugar) and a compressed potassium chlorate/sugar/al powder in some sort of mildly resistant container (think AAbattery casings).
Now seriously, match heads are superficial in this, as the kno3/sugar will more than probably melt right through the 1mm platic casing / make it det.
Shit like that :

They're great for detonators, so why not for... "this" ? ;)

A long time ago I actually tried launching some acetone peroxide using a D engine.
Yeah, it exploded on the ground.

Im currently working on and designing the same project, give me a week til you see results, pictures and diagrams.
You kind of seem a little ignorant, but what HE are you using to det?

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
why the fuck is he wondering about getting it in the fucking air???
WHAT THE HELL HE ARE YOU INTENDING TO BLAST AND DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA ON HOW TO DET IT?
a propellent sure as hell isnt going to i can say that much for sure.
wtf
Explosive info from BI but you place THIS here??
no sorry.
well, i cant give much to this thread, considering i dont do HEs. i do know that flash powder will usually do the trick in detting them tho.
but your not going to need that much, most of this rocket is going to be propellent, and then like 10% if that is going to be needed for HE and load up a lil more and well you dont have to worry about flaming chunks of rocket anywhere.
hell i think the FP should remove that from teh equation if you get a good inch thick layer, that is, if the HE doesnt
also, on testing it, just test the model rocket with a weight on it. just build it as you are going to for the real thing, but instead of loading FP and HE in it, use sand, or another medium that is close to its real weight. IE put in as much medium for the same weight of FP your putting in. same with HE
then launch that, and have it fall and recover.

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
Demunic, not that i approve him but i can prove you wrong with kno3/sugar for propellant, DDNP cap, PETN booster and RDX.
Ok ok, i admit it's overkill, but it'll work :D

wait, what are you proving me wrong about?
i was kinda saying an inch of FP should probably eradicate the rocket....

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
This sounds like a really great way to lose a couple of ounces of high explosive for no particular reason.
Also, I wouldn't get caught by any law enforcement agencies loading a high explosive into the nosecone of anything that can move. Even if you "know" it's just a model rocket I can see the headlines already...

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
You are going to use a commercial D size engine that you can buy at walmart to send a rocket 2 miles up?
Are you fucking dumb?
4000 ft max with a second stage booster.
Not to mention you are going to need a huge ass payload to see anything good that high, and if you did, you would need an even bigger engine.
I recommend you make a casting and research the good ole kno3/sucrose engine propellant.

dude if anything i think a BP propellant would be MUCH more effective in this case. much quicker/stronger reaction and less smoke that could cause several complications, like, well dense smoke can be flammable, it could offset the flight path, decrease thrust effectiveness...
or hell, whistle mix...

Either one would work, I don't mess with solid rocket fuels anymore really..kno3 is getting to hard to get a hold of around here, not to mention I've had a couple of spontaneous ignitions with it.
Hybrid rockets are the way to go.

Re: Model rocket + High explosive = ?
Why a HE? You're practically making what the Palestinians launch into Israel. Flash powder will be nearly as loud, somewhat safer, and look cooler to boot (if you do it at night).
