Default I'm bringing chivalry back from the dead

So in recent years it seems that my generation and the people a bit older aren't chivalrous anymore. Maybe it's seen as a "nice guy" thing, but today I decided to change that.

It started to rain, so I gave some chick who was only wearing a t shirt my hoody to wear so she was warm and dryish and I was the one getting freezing cold and wet. She seemed to really appreciate the gesture, and it made me feel strangely good and happy about myself, and I think I got major + points, so who knows, there might be hope for reject yet ;)

I even gave up my seat on the bus the other day for a pregnant woman, I'll be a true gentleman yet one day.

To make this thread not seem blog like or whatever, do you ever go chivalrous things for chicks? And if you're female, how much do you appreciate such gestures?

It should be obvious that all women would respond positively to a genuine gesture like the ones you are describing. I agree too that most men now a days are completely tactless, act disgusting, and repeatedly reveal themselves as vulgar.

It's not a "nice guy" thing, and shouldn't be perceived as weak. Strength is the ability to set aside your own pride and ego for someone else. Giving to others is always going to be more fulfilling.

Is it time to oil up the armour?

Taking pride in basic human kindness isn't necessary, but good job.

How else do you expect people to reinforce good behavior, if they are not allowed to first pride themselves on making a difference?

If someone wants to make the leap, I guess that pride is as good a reason as any.

Ahhh, but the idea of being chivalrous is a reward in itself. The thoughts here shouldn't be discussed in a manner of "woooing" women. It should be something you do because you cherish human life, and the sensitivities of others. Since we all know what it feels like to be hurt.

Equality
However I am chivalrous, I do give up my seat for ladies, hold door open etc.

Holding doors and giving up bus seats is just common courtesy, nothing really chivalrous about it. I do it for everyone.

aaaaaaaaaand you got nothing out of that. but way to show those women how superior you are to them with your ability to withstand the rigors of standing and being wet/cold.

QFMFT

Some of your posts, like those above, I simply love and 100% agree with, other times I find you rude, seriously mean or I just have a vastly different opinion then you (Not that that's a reason to dislike you, we just can argue about things a bit too harshly). At the end of the day though I find myself thinking of you in a more positive manner then anything else. The comments and posts you contribute easily make me appreciate you being here even though sometimes you can get me on the edge.

EDIT: Following some thinking I've decided that I am actually very similar to you in the way that I post with only perhaps a bit less of a leap in variation. Who knows though, I'm not outside looking in ;)

On topic:
Some things are common courtesy but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take pride in even doing those things. Common courtesy has turned into courtesy in my opinion and it's definitely for the worse.

I hope my (Future) kids will grow up will values/morals similar to my own and I'm glad I seem to have inherited my parents :)

I always hold the door open for everyone.
I always will give up a seat for someone I feel needs it more then me, from something simple like a bus or subway to something more uncommon like an airplane seat to allow someone to sit with someone they want to rather then a stranger.
I don't think paying for everything is a good thing, I believe men and women are equal and think each should pay whenever they feel like it which hopefully sums up to something more or less equal but who's counting?
I've payed for people to catch a bus when they didn't have the change or they lost their ticket and will keep doing so when I have the money and people need it.
I ask people if they need some help with whatever they are doing or struggling with no matter their gender/age.
I like to say thank you and be polite in general, why not?
I could go on but there's not much point :P

Now I'm no perfect guy lol and I CAN be an asshole but simple acts of kindness like these are often not followed and I DO hope that by doing them I may set an example to those around me and hope that they will then do something similar to aid someone else. We are all people, why do most not act like it?

I do agree that a lot of the ideas in your posts are similar to mine. There is definitely reason to my methods, most people think I am just an asshole. However I feel that giving people a taste of harsh criticism is necessary for emotional and mental growth. Plus I am just a sucker for heated debate! :P

Well, if you were to think of all the people in the world, how many honestly have good examples of how to care? The foundation of a lot of Ghandi's principles were on the theory that if you were to present people with the choice of good or evil, they would ultimately choose good. Becoming disgusted with cruelty is the only way to rid yourself of insensitivities.

lol fuck off! I'm always ready to join a heated debate. My one big issue that I have with it is that quite a few times people will mistake my tone of voice (In real life as well as though my typing but I would say to a lesser degree) that I get when speaking passionately as aggressive or angry.
I guess it's something I should work on a little harder then I do.

You can't kill an idea, you can choose not to follow through with it or to carry it out. People have been choosing to do it less and that's why it feels like it's dead.

Poor choices.

Just being courteous and nice in general.
A compliment, being polite in front of their parents, you know, nice? I still fail to see how this is a bad thing.

Being British, this might just work (be considered chivalry) but you'll look like a tosser to everyone else. Just don't do it in a creepy manner, Reject.

Creepy chivalry ruins (even occasional)chivalry for all of us.

Oh I definitely know what you mean, people think I am getting all riled up only because I am passionate about a particular subject. Education being a perfect example of that, and so is space flight. :P

That is besides the point though. As for how I now discuss things with people, I always stay calm. Crazy thing is I notice even when people will start getting loud, you pause for a few second, remain calm, and comment. Funny how quickly they will realize the absurdness of their actions and change their own tone. People respond to people, how you act influences how others act.

Are you kidding me, hot girls have tons of guys being nice to them buying them shit and everything and those bitches don't respect them but honestly they shouldn't either.

Well probably because those girls realize that being showered with gifts is not real affection. Which means they know those men are shallow bastards just wanting some ass.

It's not, some how people have the idea that you can't be a "man" and be "nice" at the same time.

I used to be like that, kind of like a secret thing I was just nice to random people. But then one day I realised nobody else bothers so I just started being a dick. It works better, when people push infront of you in the line for the tube and you push back infront of them and steal the first seat, pushing an old lady into a pregnant woman to get to it. The old bitch breaks her hip and the woman has a miscarriage. But you get to rest your feet and fiddle with your ipod semi comftorably.

But by all means hold a door open for me so I can step on your toes and not say thanks.

this, kind of. except i help out those that deserve it instead of wasting it on dicks.

i really actually predetermine dicks without talking to them and i'm usually right, so that's how i choose whether to be nice or not when i am out and about.

If you're not being nice to people who are dicks what's going to make them want to be nice to other people?
SET EXAMPLES! Who cares if it doesn't work, it might and that's all that matters if you really care about this world.
You can't fix it all, but you can always TRY.

You say you generally stopped doing such nice things because you realised that no one else was doing them, well now you're one less person doing them which could cause more people to realise that too and stop being nice and the spiral will continue.

CarbonB, I must say this is a profound jump from most of what I see you post. Bravo.

Oddly enough, when I am actually being kind/polite to others, it's when I'm off running around by myself. Suddenly, if friends and family are with me, I am not such a kind person to strangers (not to say I'm cruel, I just stop doing such common courtesies).

I used to get a little anxiety about doing nice things in front of my friends or family and I don't exactly know why. Maybe because I didn't want someone who could keep tabs on it, or give me credit for it, it's like my little secret.
At some point last year though I stopped caring if they saw or if they were going to give me some kind of credit for it (Even if it's just in their own heads) and cared more about being nice and setting examples. Maybe you'll change too :)

lol @ how many people are talking about CarbonB and his "newer posts".
