Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference.

Default The multi-state theory of psychedelic action

This is a new model of the mechanism of psychedelics that proposes an explanation of the visual and some cognitive effects of psychedelics of the tryptamine family. I think it is the best model so far, however, it obviously isn't trying to bridge the whole mind-brain connection, but it's a step in the right direction I think. It is a very good explanation of a lot of the visual distortions we all know and love such as the "breathing" and "melting". Also, it's proposes useful ideas about HPPD.

It was written by an active member of the more enlightened and educated members of the drug/psychedelic community. The paper is rather technical, but at least glance at the conclusions section towards the end.

the distinction between religion and science is slowly beginning to fade away, on the outer edges. but no amount of scientific knowledge, religious scriptures, or doses of drugs will give you what you want.

By embracing the multi-state model of psychedelic action we must recognize
as a species that these chemicals are essential to the growth and evolution of our neural
hardware, but can paradoxically induce psychosis and reinforce delusional belief systems when
used imprudently or to excess.

stupid! stupid stupid stupid!

all beliefs systems are delusion! all of society is psychotic. psychedelia can, for some, return them to a saner state - whatever that means.

psychedelics are by no means the only, best, or easiest way to induce a "different state". they just happen to be incredibly powerful.

we have hydrogen bombs and we have LSD. both are the same. huge blasts of energy to completely eradicate.

That statement was in reference to the parts about inducing plasticity and novel patterns of thinking. In that regard it really is important for our species to decondition the belief systems and try to find a more appropriate way to view our relationship to the planet and each other. Admittedly though, nuking civilizations off the face of the planet could do a whole lot of good for the planet in the long run.

it's not about novel thought, it's about novel being. feeling. what's going on in yr body. your thoughts don't matter at all, they only distance you from whatever reality might be.

there is no need to FIND an appropriate relationship between the planet and man. we just need to STOP doing everything that we think we need to be doing. do you think monkeys sit down and go, "hmm, I'm really wondering if this whole eating fruit, mating, walking around and protecting my territory is worth anything. maybe I should take up philosophy"? no! the monkey is just a flubbin monkey.

there is also no need for nuclear war fare as the planet has its own built in clean up system called the precession of the equinoxes.

While I mostly agree with the fact that humans should just live in the felt moment of presence and direct experience, you seem to overly dismiss thought. Thought isn't some perversion of nature as you should well know that nothing truly is out of place in the context of the entire picture of reality. It is in fact the lack of higher consciousness that brought us where we are now. By higher consciousness I mean awareness of a larger context of nature and removal from habitual thought forms introduced by language and culture. This does not mean that thoughts and ideas are unwarranted in favor of a complete lack of mental constructs.

You seem to be versed in some of the ideas of Terence McKenna and as such you should understand that while everything seems to be guided by the trends set by a novel universal order that is nature, human consciousness and thought are the highest emergent property and complexification we know of on this planet. It is our role to think and mental construction is a higher dimension of order. Ideas and intent are necessary for humans to actually realize the changes that increased awareness calls for. So basically I'm saying that while I agree with you that nature rather than human systems of thinking holds the real intelligence, our thought processes are the means by which nature realizes it at least in this moment.
