Default Tang Bomb: Liquid Explosives Are the New 'Weapon of Choice'

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,356491,00.html

" Tang, peroxide and a disposable camera — items you may very well have in your home — can be a deadly mix."

Further along in the "article":

"One was a mix of hydrogen peroxide and Tang. The citric acid in the Tang acts as a catalyst, making the mixture deadly.

The other component is a mixture known as HMTD — hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, a chemical cocktail made from readily available household and commercial ingredients. HMTD is extremely unstable and can be set off by heat, movement and even contact with metal."

Yup, nothin wrong with thier facts there.......

Yes, this is being reported as fact. :(

The theory behind it is that high test peroxide and sugar is a detonable mixture. BUT I would think that other shit in the Tang would catalyse the decomposition of the high test peroxide the moment it is mixed making it decompose to water and oxygen gas rather quickly in a non-explosive manner... dunno.

HTP will oxidise anything organic violently. You've heard those stories of people distilling peroxide and somehow a speck of dust or some minute amount of organic material is in the setup ending with devastation.

Well after you mention the fact about a speck of dust causing damage and all that it reminded me that in fact the tang/peroxide thing could create a pretty bad explosion depending on just how concentrated the peroxide was. I belive its the dragsters or something with rocket type propolsion that uses highly concertrated H2O2 going through silver wire(catalyses the H2O2) to create the big fire to push the thing. And in even higher concentrated H2O2 its possible to get it to get a big bang out of it from its decomposing. So if the terrorists had a high enough concentrated bottle of H2O2 and then used something in this case tang as the catalyst they could probably acheive a nice enough little bang to damage something.

Liquid Explosives

Lolnews. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

The citric acid in the Tang acts as a catalyst, making the mixture deadly.

Let's ban lemons for the sake of security. :D

But with such highly concentrated peroxide, the shit would be too unstable and unpredictable to be actually used, and, in all likely hood, a solution with a high enough concentration to actually perform as such wouldn't make it to the plane without it decomposing, if even out of whatever primitive lab it was made in.

IMHO the HMTD was always the real explosive and the media not getting and not understanding the facts fabricated what sheeple believable "facts" they could.

you can get it in the cleaner isle here in walmart

its in a clear glass bottle labeled lemon clean with fairly large crystals inside... labeled 99.8 percent citric acid... curiously enough... its 4.99 when the same volume of 15% ceramic cleaner sells for 30 dollars..... fucking corporate niggers

think differing solubilities...

sugar 211.5 g/100 ml (20 °C)
citric 133 g/100 ml (20°C)

what a fucking huge difference lol. I'm just glad I can buy it Cool

Modern lemonade hardly contain any real lemon. It's usually a flavouring substance and phosphoric acid.

Fuck i hate FOX's fearmongering.

Let me spell it out.

"Tang makes a liquid that can be made into a bomb" (Bullshit, but let's move on)

"Terrorists used liquids that were made into bombs!"

Great association there, jackasses.

Drink beer for about 10 years regularly.

It's a liquid explosive after that long.

QFT

HMTD is an easy synth. Hexamine can be bought pure in the form of stove fuel tablets at camping/military surplus stores.

They will be limiting that to soon no doubt..

*cough*

Place a flask with 50 ml of 40% formaldehyde solution in ice-bath, while stirring, add 100 ml of 10% ammonia in small portions. Great amount of heat will be evolved. After, close flask and leave it for couple of hours.

In the end there should be still ammonia smell present. Note that ammonia is in excess.

Solution is evaporated to dryness at 100*C, hexamine will precipitate as white crystals (slightly yellow depending on impurities). Do evaporation outside, since there will be given off excess of ammonia.

Hexamine may be recrystallized from hot alcohol.

Since ammonia can't be banned because of the excessive use in virtually everything, let's ban formaldehyde ?

Oh shit but formaldehyde can be made from methanol right ? Let's ban methanol !

But... but... methanol can be extracted right ? Aaaaargh, let's ban wood !

I'll make RDX from tree branches, copper pipe, vinegar and air.
Tree branches --> MeOH, MeOH + Copper pipe --> Formaldehyde
Air + haber process --> NH3, NH3 + Formaldehyde --> Hexamine
Air + BE reactor --> HNO3
Vinegar --> AA
AA + HNO3 + Hexamine --> ???

I wish I lived in a world where that was possible.

Eldorhan,

What online source is that hexamine synth from? I've come across a few on random ebooks but nothing quite like that. This is the first synthesis I've read that requires the two liquids to be heated.

How hard is it to acquire a high concentration of H2O2? Isn't most hydrogen peroxide only like 15%? Fox News is so full of bullshit. Assume you do get tang and the other shit on a plane. Wouldn't it smell horrible as you are mixing your bomb together? And wouldn't you need a shit load of both liquids to be able to do serious damage?

There are many different grades of hydrogen peroxide that can be bought OTC and online, but as you probably already know the higher concentration the more expensive it's going to be.

Lab-grade H2O2 is sold in 50% concentration.

Standard grade is 35% concentration, also contains stabilizers and additives (used in water treatment facilities).

Technical grade is also 35% concentration with phosphorus added to neutralize chlorine (used in laundry, cosmetics, and portable water cleaners).

30-32% Electronic Grade Hydrogen Peroxide
Used for washing transistors and integrated chip parts before assembly.

30% Re-Agent Hydrogen Peroxide
Used in medical research.

6% Hydrogen Peroxide
Used by Beauticians for Coloring Hair. Also used as a sanitizing agent.

3% Hydrogen Peroxide (Drug/Grocery Store Variety)
Used as antimicrobial agent for treating wounds and sanitizing agent
Contains stabilizers - phenol, acetanilide, sodium stanate, tetrasodium phosphate among them

But eh, anyway, I'm guessing anything above a 3% concentration should do the job. Although it wouldn't hurt to just go to the hair dye section and pickup a bottle of 30% concentration...

And if I'm not mistaken, HMTD synths require the reaction vessel to stay cool am I right? How would the terrorist go about keeping the temperature regulated while on a plane? I can see ice cubes being easy to get a hold of but still..

Honestly, i don't remember. It was a quick google & paste.

It's valid tho, i've used it a few times in the past.
