Default My first Absinthe purchase

So i just purchased a bottle of Kubler absinthe. 1 liter for $70 (kinda steep but whatever)

106 proof, and i really enjoy the taste..

the other absinthe available was Lucid and it was 70$ a fifth..i'll have to try it next.

has anyone had any experiences with either of these brands?

I think its a waste of money, just buy some Thurjone extract (be careful, enough of it is poisonous), but I understand if you have the $$ its cool to try it, if I'm ever abroad I plan to get myself a pint or fifth as well...

But anyways as I just wrote in the Brandy thread have you tried the tradition method of consuming absinthe using a "absinthe spoon" and a melted sugar cube? Looks neat, if I paid that much for the shit I'd def try it, seeing how its the traditional way of use from yesteryears.

This has the tradition use instructions under "Czech or Modern Bohemian Method", plus any other thing you may need to know about it. Plus there are a few more...

edit; oh and btw, this ritual can be seen in the Johnny Depp movie "From Hell" about jack the ripper, plus he adds some Laudanum (a old powerful Morphine/Liquor mixture) to it.

Oh yes, I definately researched it like hell..

and i tried both methods (the fire method and non-fire one)

both seem about the same...i really enjoy the taste of this liquor..and i like to drink "fancy" so this was right up my alley...was just wondering if anyone had ever tried either of these brands, since they are the only ones available in my area...

106proof, i got drunk real fast...no visuals though..but I wasn't honestly expecting it.

very good liquor though..very milk taste once the spoon/sugar/water method was used, very nice.

i recommend kubler to anyone who likes to try new alcohol.

although, i am probably a terrible reference seeing as this is my first drink of absinthe ever.

you won't get many answers here b/c Absinthe is outlawed in the US. Also you may get better answers in Oral Indulgances

I've tried Lucid brand and stuff my friend made at home (with his own still and essences from Switzerland) and the Lucid shit doesn't even come close. They won't allow enough thujone in the US to do anything. You'll get alcohol poisoning before you feel any more than drunk/placebo. I've finished a 5th of Lucid with a few people in a night. 3 shots (mixed with water & sugar the traditional way) of the homemade stuff is about my limit. I can get 4 down on a good night.

you won't get visuals off any kind of modern commercial absinthe. they've lowered the wormwood content to the point where you can't trip. the strongest absinthe i ever had was 95 per cent. Fucking rocket fuel man. Those "do it yourself" absinthe kits online seem cool as they supposedly have the desired amount of wormwood in them. I can't vouch for them or anything but it'd be interesting to try.

Is this really true? There was an article last week, where they tested bottles of absinthe from back a 100 years ago & they found no great quantities of Thujone. So, it appears that modern man is thu-jonesing for a myth. After all: as with Gin, the herbs are not placed in the acohol, but instead in a basket that the alcohol vapors pass through on their way to the receptacle.

The article claimed that it was the high alcohol content that was causing the purported wonkinesses.

>>>Well apparently http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20080423/news_1f23absinthe.html

Some absinthes have more than the US 10ppm., but there are lots of myths & hype. That's what allows it to be so expensive. I doubt that it is any harder or more expensive to make than an equivalent gin. Of course the extra alcohol increases the price. I think that the cost tends to be quite a bit higher than need be.

It's not a whole lot more expensive than gin or rum or whatever if you have your own still. My guy sells absinthe for $30 per quart, whereas 190+ proof moonshine is $20. He's not the type to tax because of a name, either.

And it's definitely not just the high alcohol content. The thujone is active. Like I said before, I can get 3 glasses of absinthe down, I can probably get 6 of moonshine down.

I think its a waste of money, just buy some Thurjone extract

Or make your own too.

Still not as worthwhile as other ventures.

Is it made the traditional way where the wormwood is never in the liquid alcohol, but only in the vapor?
