10 Books that Screwed Up The World
http://listverse.com/literature/10-b...-up-the-world/
Uh huh.... More controversy over the list than the books in the comments section.
((Please don't move to IFIOTW, the place is having a "somewhat" civil argument about it. Brought it here thinkin some may enjoy the convo there. If a mod doesn't want it here, lock it or delete it please)

Re: 10 Books that Screwed Up The World
Jamie Frater on the Communist Manifesto: "it could win the award for the most malicious book ever written"
...coming from the same guy that also posted the Top 25 Ayn Rand Quotes.
Yeah, there's no agenda here...
Oh, and what a zany coincidence that his aforementioned quip about the commie manifesto is literally the same thing (as are his quips about The Prince, Mein Kampf, and Coming of Age in Samoa...again, word for word transcriptions) that Benjamin Wiker says in his similarly titled book...10 Books that Screwed Up The World (who's a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, the "intelligent design" propaganda mill), which makes the fact that Frater also put Darwin's Black Box on the list because it "fuels fundamentalist attacks on Science [sic]" a little weird...
But the overall question is why the fuck is this list notable? Some random Randroid spews a load on a blog and suddenly it's news? Who gives half a fuck what books some douche doesn't like because they conflict with his objectivist theosopy?

I can agree with you that there are worse books than "mein kaumphy chair" but you can't blame the bible for strife, you can only blame the zealot assholes who misinterpreted it and twisted it to meet their desires.

And yet, had the Bible not been produced, then we wouldn't have gone apeshit on each other. Cause and effect, nay?
|
Nay.

Re: 10 Books that Screwed Up The World
The problem isn't bad books; it's idiots who read some author's opinion and take it as fact. Except not only do they take it as fact, they take it to be absolute truth, swallowing it up without a thought and beating it, physically and metaphorically, into everyone else.
It's rubbish.

Got 2 out of 10. I keep my Mein Kampf next to my Communist Manifesto to cancel each other out.

Re: 10 Books that Screwed Up The World
If more people would actualy read the Communist Manifesto instead of just saying "it looks good on paper but would never work" then the workers of the world would realize what a shithole we live in and actualy do somthing about it. And they cannot say that it inspired "some of the most brutal regimes in man’s history" seeing that no country as followed the Manifesto's outline or progressed past the stage of socialism.

It isn't so much the bible as the old testament that is fucking evil.

"Jesus' intent is not to abolish or replace Old Testament law; anyone who fails to follow the law will be called "least" while those who teach the law will be called "greatest" in the kingdom of heaven; people who wish to enter the kingdom of heaven must exceed the righteousness of the Pharisees (5:17-20)"*

I was expecting, Torah, Gospels, Qur'an as top 3. Then Dr. Sues.

Naturally. The books were wrote by people, after all.
However, spreading the idiocy like an infectious plague causes the people to screw up. One needs only observe what would happen if entire books or ideologies never saw the light of day.
So by killing the vehicle for the transmission of the fail, one would cut off the means by which the idiocy would persist.
You can't decide to engage in some specific brand of idiocy that you have no concept of - hence the idea that eliminating the delivery mechanism of the idiocy would have been for the best.

Re: 10 Books that Screwed Up The World
The author of the list is an idiot; we should make an example out of him, for academia!
