| Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference. |

Better grades through passing chemistry or ITT we do DiStoRtioN's chemistry homework
Write a balanced chemical equation describing what happens when liquid oxygen is used to light charcoal.
Write a lewis dot structure for each of the products.
Determine the hybridization of each product.
If 4 gallons of liquid oxygen (density 1142 kg m-3) are used to light 50 pounds of charcoal.
Determine the limiting reagent
Calculate the mass of all reactants and products when the reaction is complete
Calculate the volume (at STP) of any gas formed by this reaction
Calculate [delta]Hrxn for this process.
Calculate the amount of heat released using the amounts given above.
Calculate the amount of water, with an initial temperature of 10 °C, that may be brought to boiling with this amount of energy.
Calculte the amount of water, with an initial temperature of 10 °C, that may be boiled with this amount of energy.

Re: Better grades through passing chemistry or ITT we do DiStoRtioN's chemistry homework
you gotta be joking dude!
take it one step at a time.
first, write a balanced equation.
now, do up the Lewis structures (easy) and the hybridization (easy to cheat on)
then do the density-to-mole conversion on liquid O2 and find the number of moles of charcoal (just use the atomic mass of carbon I guess, even though charcoal is a lot more than that),
assume the reaction goes to completion and then figure the limiting reagent and amount of CO2 given off (moles --> volume)
from enthalpy tables figure the delta-H (products - reactants) and plug that into some Gibbs-derived equation for T.
then take the energy derived figure, and apply it to the heat capacity of water + all that other stuff to find how much can be boiled.
i don't know how to do the last part. but you ought to know how to get at least most of the way through this problem.

IN BEFORE LOCK LOL! Really bored though so...
Write a balanced chemical equation describing what happens when liquid oxygen is used to light charcoal.
Pure charcoal is just carbon, otherwise they would have indicated what formula it has
C(s)+O2(l)->CO2(g)
Write a lewis dot structure for each of the products.

Determine the hybridization of each product.
sp hybrid
If 4 gallons of liquid oxygen (density 1142 kg m-3) are used to light 50 pounds of charcoal.
Determine the limiting reagent
Oxygen
Calculate the mass of all reactants and products when the reaction is complete
39.97kg
Calculate the volume (at STP) of any gas formed by this reaction
12104 L
Someone else do the rest oh yeah and gtfo
