Default Why would Odinists ask for "protection"?

I have terror staves, and a valknot (death knot) tattoo. But a very generic tattoo that odinists get is that little snowflake charm. It's supposed to mean protection in battle.

But why would you want that? If your protected in battle, you'll never die in battle (wich should be the main goal for people who follow this). On top of that, it's giving some power to something that cant help you. And I know there was a smaller branch of Odinist in Europe who worshipped Frigga or something instead of Odin, and they didn't believe in being aggressive and all of this other stuff. And I'm guessing thats where this nonsense came from.

As far as terror staves, there is such thing as an aura. There might actually be something to it. If not, it's part of the culture. Asking god to put fear in your enemies isn't wrong. Asking him to protect you is, and it's stupid. You are the only person with power over your own situation. Protection from pain or something I understand, but why the hell would want protection in battle, if the only way to get into Valhalla is to die in battle? Besides, there is no such thing as protection in battle. The best fighters win (that is nature). A higher being protecting someone, thats just like alot of these contradicting christian concepts. Odinism is about nature. The strongest win, and people who die fighting go to Valhalla.

Maybe you're fighting for something other than yourself, or your desire to go to Valhalla?

Being a practicing Odinist, why are you not finding battles in which to die a glorious death in?

Why are you not in Iraq, or a Merc, etc.

I think as an Odinist you fail. Take your magical sticks, throw them in the garbage, and grow up a little.

People still worship Odin? I'm assuming Ragnarock hasn't happened yet then?

Shit, I thought Ragnarock was what killed off all the old gods, destroyed the old world, and paved the way for Christianity.

The Valknut is not for 'protection'. It's the knot of the slain - the slain.

It's to show Odin that you're ready for him when ever Wyrd decides that its your time to die and come to his side in Valhalla. But while still in Midgard it shows that you're loyal to him, it's pretty much an instant oath. Even with your bullshit knowledge you should still know that breaking an oath is a very serious matter indeed (karma/wyrd will bite you in the ass, and no one will trust you)

As an Odinist/Asatruar, I'm still yet to abuse/enlighten you about your racist shit in your other thread. But I'll do so another day when I'm in the mood for a rant

As an Odinist, I think I speak for the majority of other Odinists when I say that Ace is an idiot and should not be payed attention to as a representation of our faith. He makes us look bad.

I have no doubt that life is eternal, death an illusion.

I still carry various protective stones, and a gun when I'm working.

I would guess that an Odinist in battle might want protection from just being maimed or mutilated , as opposed to being killed cleanly.

I wouldn't think it would be enough to die in battle to get into Valhalla. Only the bravest warriors get into Valhalla. So, yeah, I would think an Odinist would want protection, so he could kill as many enemies as possible before falling.

What would Odin do with a follower who fell in his first fight? Welcome him into Valhalla? I don't think so...

Odin is playing a joke on you, he lawls everytime someone dies in his name.

Every religion has its wackjobs. You, OP, are that guy.
