Ubuntu is great for linux n00bs. You can just use the Wubi installer after you get your Ubuntu ISO to install Ubuntu just like a standard windows program.

If you use slackware as your first distro you'll end up shooting yourself.

Go with Ubuntu or maybe Fedora.

Fedora is not minimal by any stretch of the word.

Puppy linux is good...if you can get it to recognise your hardware. DSL makes a few too many concessions for me (if only they still updated DSL-N, I think 100mb is a better target)

He never said that drive space was an issue. If he's going for "everything except games", he'll need a real distro.

I think most distos will run about the same if you have the same window manager.
I think its more of a question of how to configure your shit.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and recommend Fedora (again). It's just a good general use distro. Just wap through the installer with pretty much the defaults. (except for setting up dual booting)
