Lightbulb music server - recomend a solution

Recomend me a solution concisting in music server (linux) + music player for streaming over internet.

I wan't to install a streaming server at home to play my music while I'm away through internet. I will need that a compatible audio player exists for windows. Right now I'm just using ftp+queuing by hand.

Which is the simplest solution?

Simplest is probably Ubuntu, best on GNU/Linux is probably Gentoo, and best overall is probably OpenBSD. I've heard good things about the filesystem on OpenBSD.

Remember to get Ubuntu-server if you get Ubuntu, and remember to make the filesystem on the drive(s) that'll be doing the music ReiserFS (on GNU/Linux).

Not really sure what you could do to actually get access to them, at that point.

Thanks Prometheum, but I was not asking about the distro itself(that will be my already installed Debian) , but an application/protocol that would suit my needs. For example http://www.icecast.org/
I was wandering if someone had experience on this, and which method would be recommended (and sepecially which wouldn't ). Unfortunately my music is already there in an ext3 fs. What is the advantage of reiserfs?

.

ReiserFS is better with smaller files, like music files.

Icecast might be good; If you want to you could hack around with Drupal and/or VLS.

I'm gonna get hit for saying this here, but unfortunately the easiest way to do it would probably be to set up a Windows server with IIS, streaming as WMA, which you could then open with pretty much anything.

I could not get a fucking Icecast server setup for the life of my mother, on windows! I was trying to set it up with xbmc, so maybe that was the issue, but perhaps not.
The only thing I did get working was iTunes shared library.

I was going to recommend mt-daapd, which is a Free DAAP server (the iTunes shared library system), but it seemed like you wanted something accessible over the internet, not over a LAN.

If its a LAN, you wan mt-daapd. It has a web interface, it can convert OGG or FLAC to WAV so that shit like iTunes can play it, it comes with a kitten, etc.

Look into slimserver. It seems like exactly what you're looking for.

I use MPD. It allows me to connect to my desktop from any computer on my lan and play music (through the desktop). It's really nice if you happen to have a lot of speakers around your house - you can listen to music wherever you go. I'm not sure if mpd allows you to play music on the client computer - that's something to research.

Thumbs up Re: music server - recomend a solution

Thanks all for the input, actually I want to use it over internet. I checked for slimserver, it is in the stable repositories but for some reason not in testing (which I'm using) so finally I tried gnump3d and it is quite good, the only defects so far is that it lacks of any authentication other than ip allow/deny, and it seems that when creating a custom playlist I can select directories but not single files. Deus, I doubt that the windows option is simpler than this, It was just apt-get install gnump3d, change 2 lines in the config file and restart it...
