| Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Please try to keep your conversations "theoretical" in nature, since this is an open conference. |

kava and life
My father just shared some stories with me about his trips to fiji and his love for kava from there, and he hasn't had any in about 20 years.
I can't seem to find anything on erowid about the specific chemicals in it, or their effects on people. This leads me to think it's not BLTC material.
However, BLTC is about "living" through chemistry, so it's not all hardcore 24/7 is it? Has anyone had any of this stuff? Should i buy it online, or should i be able to buy it at a local vitamin store.. etc.?
It sounds like a nice chill way to spend a weekend evening, by his storytelling.... what do you think about it?
EDIT: I say this because i'm thinking of buying him some for his 50'th birthday and maybe sharing a buzz with the old man

Re: kava and life
First off, Robinhoody's Kava article http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/189661/beginners_guide_to_kava.html
I bought a few ounces a while ago to try out. I couldn't really notice any affect on me, however. Maybe a slight feeling of relaxation, but that was about it. I don't know, the strength of the effects vary from person to person.
The best place to buy it is online. Don't purchase the extract in capsules from your local vitamin store. It's not real expensive and there are a couple good vendors out there. The root is fresher than the powder. I used a mortar and pestle to grind down the root and it was a bitch to do. I'd recommend using a coffee grinder to make it into powder. Just make sure to clean it out thoroughly before the next morning ;)
The experience probably won't be like the one he had in Fiji years ago, from what I've read, their shit blows your socks off. But that doesn't mean you won't be able to experience it and have a good time.
It's used in social ceremonies so I'm sure it'll be great to share the experience w/ your dad for his 50th.
I got mine from gaianbotanicals.com btw

Re: kava and life
Kava is one of my favorite things, although it took a long time to develop a taste for it. Get your dad some of the Hawaiian Kava (awa). Its better than the Fiji stuff IMO, and i've done loads of both.
Also, like thatcoolkid touched on, dont buy any extracts. Just Buy the root. I bought a bunch of Kaviar once and it just wasnt the same. Made me ill.
If you dont want to go to the hassle of making the drink, just put a few table spoons of root in a glass of water and force it doen. Then have a glass of milk or eat some fatty food. Good times.

Re: kava and life
This kid in my math class buys ounces of Kava (woodchip form) for about $4.50 and chews it constantly. It makes your mouth numb, it's cool.

Stay away from the local store sold kava -'tis weak
buy your kava strictly from ethnobotanical vendors.
There are plenty of vendors - just do a simple search,
and if I was you, I'd look specifically for 'Vanuatu' kava or
'Fiji' kava, both are my personal favorites.
Lastly, make certain to obtain crushed root
as opposed to powdered material.
.peace.

And I'm not about to be insulted by a "internet weed dude."

Re: kava and life
Don't worry about that little shit IWD... this is what he does.
Also, I love Kava, since the first time I tried it, I loved it! So relaxing and so... worth it, no bad effects, no hangover.... I love the stuff!
If you are planning to get your pops a hefty bag of root then by all means, buy it through my link to bouncing bear botanicals.
I get paid for referals... and I can vouch for their customer service and good products.
So if you do get him that gift, please order through this link.
Thanks!
