Installing xubuntu on a PS3
Hey guys I'm wanting to install Linux on my brothers PS3. He's been wanting to get a computer but he would only use it for internets and porn. I figured I'd save him the money. Plus Linux on a PS3 is bad ass. I would like to install Ubuntu on it but stability is a must here. I've seen a lot of different tutorials but I've never done this before and I've seen a lot of threads about it fucking up based on these tutorials. I just want your opinions on what works best with the PS3 right now and a good tutorial on installing it so he can dual boot his PS3 OS for gaming shit and then Linux when he wants to fap to some tranny porn or whatever.

Re: Installing xubuntu on a PS3
I don't know if you can dual-boot a PS3, though you might be able to. Normal Xubuntu won't run on it, you'll need a distro that works for the powerPC architecture. Gentoo is good for that.

Op, your doing it wrong.
First off PS3 uses Power PC arch along with smaller cores.
Now there is a Linux distribution made entirely for PS3. you should check that out.
Also using Linux on PS3 might look cool but its not worth it.
Get him some decent computer its far better then PS3.
Not kidding.

Yeah YDL. Also most distros have a PPC version.
PS3 and linux = fail. Well mostly. It's just not that ideal atm.
But if you really want to. Gentoo I believe is pretty good. I never managed to get it set up though so you'll probably have a hard time if you don't know how.
I've tried Ubuntu and YellowDog and I'd say YD is better. You don't have to worry about fucking up your ps3 as Other OS has no access to anything really other than it's own partition on the HDD.
Anyway, what's wrong with the ps3 browser?

No, you're wrong. You can run Linux on PowerPC, its been done for years. Almost every distro has a PowerPC build, especially the bigger ones. Including Ubuntu, might I add.
Linux on the PS3 is so good that companies sell clusters of PS3's as enterprise grade hardware. That's a 400$ cell processor and its great. You won't find better performance cheaper. Some x86 piece of shit will never be able to compare. OP has a great idea, and to be frank you're being an idiot.

Thats the main point of putting linux on it. Why should he have to go out and spend money on a normal computer he wouldn't really use for much other than standard things when he has a perfectly capable (some might argue a beast) sitting in his living room. Sony could pull way ahead in the console war if they offered a RAM upgrade of 2GB and started making Open Source drivers for their hardware. To bad they've lost the ingenuity I thought they once had. I'd definitely buy one if they offered a RAM upgrade.
EDIT: or if I found out a way to upgrade the RAM in them.

No, i am not saying that Linux can't run Power PC. what i am saying is running Linux on PS3 isn't a good idea right now. But Linux would run fine in any case but not that good.
The best thing would be, to install Linux on PS3 and check it out yourself.

This guy has the right idea. I would love to have a PS3 and Linux, I'd use it to do all my audio/video editing, as well as transcoding. That cell processor's a fucking beast compared to my lowly AMD3200+ single core.
