Opium poppy cultivation
i know several of you grow and harvest your own opium. Im currently looking for a house with a nice sized back yard and i would like to begin this as well.
a few questions:
- how many poppies can you grow in a given square foot measurement? (i.e. 3 poppies per square foot or whatever)
- how long do they take to go from seed to harvest if growing outdoor in a cold climate in CA?
- what is the average yeild per poppy at harvest?
- how sensitive are they? do i need to do anything to them besides water them?
- what kind of dirt will they grow best in?
..as you can tell i dont know much about this subject so any help is appreciated
(P.S. Mods, im also going to post this in Great Out Doors so if it doesnt fit here just close it, thanks)

Re: Opium poppy cultivation
I just chucked all the seeds from 2 pods into my garden, and now I have fucking loads which have germinated and are about 4cm big now.
I can't wait. I think poppies aren't too fussy where they grow

Re: Opium poppy cultivation
- how many poppies can you grow in a given square foot measurement? (i.e. 3 poppies per square foot or whatever)Ideally, one per cubic foot. They do best spaced at least 6" apart, with at least 6-12" of root room. Note, that's one plant. Depending on the strain, each plant will produce from one (I think Gigantheums are a one-pod strain) to a dozen or more (like Hen's and Chicks) pods.
- how long do they take to go from seed to harvest if growing outdoor in a cold climate in CA?Depends on the strain and the exact growing conditions, but roughly 3-4 months. Last time I started them indoors in February, moved them out in April, and they were ready in July.
- what is the average yeild per poppy at harvest?Depends entirely on the strain and the growin conditions. There is absolutely no way to estimate.
- how sensitive are they? do i need to do anything to them besides water them? No. They're extremely hardy. They're literally a "sprinkle and wait" kind of crop.
- what kind of dirt will they grow best in?Slightly sandy, from what I've heard, but I've always started them in peat pots and then transferred to organic Miracle Gro and had great results.
(P.S. Mods, im also going to post this in Great Out Doors so if it doesnt fit here just close it, thanks)This is definitely best suited for TGO.
