I installed the Chaser MP demo, ran just fine except the server menu just lags, but when you get into a server, it runs fine.

I had that problem too. I tried running the steam installation off of my Windows partition, but that didnt work, because Wine is not compatible with the ntfs-3g drivers.
But after I copied it to my linux partition it worked specifying any options.

Short version: I didnt install Steam with wine, I copied the whole Valve folder off of my window drive.

at wine app DB it says it should install and run just fine.
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=1554

the thing about ubuntu is everything takes a lot of time to get updated. I have gutsy myself and my wine version is 0.9.46

the versions in the link i gave are 0.9.58 and 0.9.59

there's some instructions here on getting the latest wine version for hardy
http://www.ubuntu-unleashed.com/2008...in-ubuntu.html
check those out. [it's basically just putting a new source for wine]

so you can either upgrade gutsy to hardy and get the new wine version like that, or find your own source for an updated wine for gutsy.

PS: I have not tried this myself.
