Default Cool things a dekstop user can do with bash scripts?

Can anything nifty be done with them?

Yes - especially in combination with cron.

I back up all of my firefox addons and preferences, my pidgin preferences, and other preferences, every 12 hours in the 7zip format using a shell script and cron.

I also have a script that sets up SSH tunnels so that I can browse Totse from behind censoring public WAPs or sign into plaintext-auth sites on untrusted networks.

You are a little paranoid.

No I'm not. People sniff public WAP's all the time. Hell, I'm one of those people.

Proactive security is always a good thing.

Think of anything you do repeatedly or could/want to do repeatedly. You could script that. Think of anything that you would want to do regularly and do often. You could make that script a cron job and have the entire process automated.

My backup script is an example of that. Instead of pulling all the files I need into a folder and then zipping it manually every 12 hours, I set up a script and set it to run every 12 hours.

Another thing you could do is set up a script to download the image files from certain webcomic sites into a set folder at certain times, so you could just go to ~/webcomics to see the latest of each one.

I've got my computer hooked up to my surround amp.
Using bash and cron, I wrote up a little alarm clock.

So yeah, every morning I get woken up by 500W of music.
...I have a hard time getting up in the morning, okay?

So there you have it, cron + a few lines in a bash script = a better alarm clock than money can buy.

Code:
1       22      *       *       *       sudo /etc/update_TextMate_snippets.sh;
One of my cron jobs I have that run's my script that I created to update my TextMate bundles.
