Legalizing Heroin
I have to do a persuasive paper for English and it has to be on some kind of social issue, but his rule was no legalization of marijuana papers.
So I went up and asked if I could do a paper on legalization of a different drug, such as LSD. He still said no, but then he came up and said if I were to write one on Heroin and actually give good points, he'd let me do it because it was a far-fetched idea.
So I need a couple more reasons for it's legalization. So far I have:
Fentanyl and Morphine are both legal analgesic drugs, why not use Heroin too if Fentanyl's more potent?
If it was legal it wouldn't be mixed with other drugs, which are the main reason for heroin overdoses (the other drugs acting with heroin). If it was legal you could get pure amounts and actually know what you're buying.
It's addictive qualities are wildly exaggerated by the media. It's easier to quit heroin than cigarettes(Not sure if this is true, I read this in a book in our library about).
Any help would be appreciated
EDIT: Oh and my other point was if it was legal, users wouldn't have to use the unsafe method of injecting, thus decreasing the spread of Aids and Hepatitis. Yeah, I know I'm really stretching this, but I need to write a five page paper on this.

Re: Legalizing Heroin
epic fail.
Ya.... stopping an IV heroin habit is WAY easier then quitting cigarettes (which don't even get you high).
My advice is choose a new topic, because heroin should not be legalized. Except maybe for medical use, but even then, very few people would actually be prescribed heroin.

I hope your not being serious. Either that, or you have no fucking clue what a heroin addiction is like, especially one where youve been banging the shit for a while. Cigarette addiction is bad, but its like a cakewalk compared to getting off that chiva.

no i think... like he said...this is a fictional story.

You clearly don't know what sarcasm is....
Thats why I started with 'epic fail'....
I assumed most people would be able to piece it together.

Yeah, I didn't believe the thing the book said about the addiction being less than cigarettes. I was in awe when I read that.
But can anyone think of any more points?

In that case there's a good point for the essay: It's used elsewhere, why not in the states? Not sure if that would fill up 5 pages though.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll definitely use that one, too.
I have a feeling this paper's going to end up being really ridiculous...
But you'd be surprised, my school library has some really pro-legalization books for Marijuana and Cocaine as well as others. I'm sure I can find some sources.
If anyone can think of anymore, that'd be awesome.

I think that you should argue for the legalization of all drugs on the basis that the government does not have the authority to control what we put into our own bodies. You can make it into a philosophical debate about human rights, the role of government, autonomy under the law, etc. But that's just my suggestion...

Re: Legalizing Heroin
look for the article on the clinics in the uk that provide a sanitary environment and pharmaceutical grade heroin to addicts... people started getting jobs instead of turning to crime, rate of disease went down among the intravenous drug users, and many decided to get help and go to rehab or put more of an effort into getting clean and back on their feet...

Re: Legalizing Heroin
Me and another poster have a debate on heroin legalization here:
http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2108000&highlight=legalize+heroin&page=2
While I'm against it, the person I debated with did bring up excellent points and a few sources that you could use to great effect.
Most of the thread is legalization of marijuana, but on post 72 I bring up heroin and the rest of the thread is based on that.

Re: Legalizing Heroin
Because prohibition leads more people to use Heroin abusively and dangerously than if it were legal.
Because it is dangerous when not regulated and used in safe/clean environments.
Because junkies get thrown in jail, go in withdrawl without proper care, and get shoved back out onto the street without the knowledge of how to live in society without heroin.
Because dirty needles are commonly exchanged and dangerously disposed of. Clean needle exchange could have drastic impacts on aids/hepatitis numbers of heroin addicts.
I've written convincing papers on things hundreds of times more rediculous than the legalization of heroin.

Re: Legalizing Heroin
Well I don't have any extra reasons for legalizing heroin, but I can give you a counter to one of the more common reasons people give against legalizing it. That argument, which is used against legalizing heroin for pain patients or even terminally ill patients, is: They are already in great pain [or dying], why add to their troubles by getting them addicted in addition to everything else?
If heroin were legalized medically, it would be for people who have conditions that are going to be with them for the rest of their life. If it's going to last their life, then they'll be in pain the rest of their life. If they're in pain the rest of their life, they'll need the heroin for the rest of their life. If they're already going to be using it for the rest of their lives, then why even be concerned about addiction since it would be redundant anyway. So the point is moot.
And for those fuckers whose concern is only that the pain patients would be getting high, anyone who has needed pain killers - correctly - knows that if you take the proper dose, you don't get high; that it goes to the pain before it goes to the head, so to speak.

I was able to quit heroin but it was not an IV habit. My brother still cannot quit smoking and he has been trying to for a year atleast now. But there could be different factors invovled.

I used heroin - never needles though - for over 15 years. But I quit over about 3 weeks to a month and with hadly any w/d - I basically detoxed myself but with heroin not methadone. So yeah, it can be done.

Re: Legalizing Heroin
well u can use the old "the government can tax it and make money, since its going to be used anyway"
and that it would help control the spread of HIV and Hep C in addicts, if they could could do Heroine in a controlled environment like how some methadone clinics, have people come in everyday and get there "fix".
I dunno its a really hard point to argue.

Re: Legalizing Heroin
and argument against would be that it could become expensive because of teh tolerance built up over time and therefore the greater amount needed.
and arument for would be that legal acess to drugs sis a basic human entitlement that should not be infringed on by the government ( especially if its a democratic one in which the majority are in favour of drug use/a certain drug.).

Re: Legalizing Heroin
You need to look up why we should legalize ALL drugs for your arguement on why we should legalize heroin. You should probably make that the focus of your paper instead; all drugs should be legalized including heroin.
In short, the reason all drugs should be legal and controled is because when you make drugs illegal you create a black market for them, in every instance. What that means is, criminals are allowed to rack in all the profits, set the prices, battle for selling territory, sell to any age group, etc. If we legalize heroin (and all drugs for that matter) you take the profit motives away from these criminals and they aren't sold on the streets anymore.
Think of it like this, when they made alcohol illegal, over night a HUGE illegal alcohol industry was created and ran by criminals (like Al Capone.) Our country eventually realised that prohibition doesn't work and made alcohol legal again (just like they should do with drugs.) Then, over night, Al Capone and his gangsters were put out of business because honestly, if you can go buy your brew from the store up the street, why would you go buy it from Johnny on the street corner?
See what I mean? That is a MUCH better arguement than any of the others mentioned.

I don't have time to do a full rundown on it right now, but look up the Widnes Clinic Trials.
It pretty much disproves every common argument against heroin legalization.

For your paper, heroin, compared to morphine, is a much better pain reliever, with less side effects.

Yeah, I was definitely going to use the whole Prohibition only leads to shady people making money and people abusing it dangerously approach. I wish I could just do it on all drugs and make broader points but my teacher didn't even want me to do a legalization paper in the first place. He just wanted to see if I could actually do one about Heroin, which he knows is the most frowned upon drug in the mainstream.
Oh and to the person that mentioned the articles about the UK, I looked and I couldn't really find what you were talking about. Do you happen to have the link anywhere?
Thanks for all the help, I just turned in my proposal and he approved.
