Default Shrooms Schizophrenia Trigger?

Hi, I'm thinking about trying Shrooms. I have a safe place to do it with people who know what they're doing. The problem is, I have slight schizophrenic tendencies (Pushing things into reality and then have a slight amount of trouble disbelieving them, etc) and have a family history of mental illness.

I know some drugs can act as triggers for major schizophrenic attacks... or any mental disorder. I'm freaked out as it is.

Does anyone have any information on this? For any kind of mental illness? Links to pages or something? I'd really really appreciate it...

if your worried its gonna make you go crazy then dont do it, the simple fact is if you have any remotely bad thoughts it could make you have a bad trip, and shrooms are not a very fun trip anyways, if your gonna trip out get some doses or something

you dont have schitzophrenia. if you think you may do, see a psychiatrist. if he/she gives you an antipsychotic, dont do psychedelics.

Shrooms are a good trip. Just take a comfortable dosage and be in a comfortable setting.

No one can tell you if it is safe or not.

No one can say you have X risk of developing X mental illness because, quite frankly, no one knows what the fuck is going on.

All we know is that some people who used some drugs developed some mental illnesses. No one knows if the drugs caused the disorders, or if they merely exacerbated a pre-existing condition, or if it's all just an unfortunate coincidence.

I mean, if it makes you feel better, people have been using shrooms for thousands of years, and the number of people to develop schizophrenia is pretty low. Any risk of mental breakdown is probably quite small.

But only you can make that decision for yourself. You know yourself better than anyone here does.

If you're hesitant, though, that's generally a good idea to not go rushing into anything, you know? Take your time and weigh things out.

I've heard all about good and bad trips and the stuff about shrooms, so I'm not gonna do it if I have a note of a bad thought.

I don't know... So it's a go?

Thank you guys for your reply!

What mental illness runs into your family? Honestly it sounds like a bad idea to me if you think you may have mental issues. If you do and something happens it will be very bad. When i was in high school there was this stoner kid i was friends with who was schizophrenic and had a hard time staying away from acid & hallucinogens for some reason. Once a year he'd take one it seemed and he'd go missing for a month or sometimes more. And by missing i mean he wasn't in school because eh was locked up in a psych ward ; his trips wouldn't stop for 2 weeks+

i havent seen him since highschool i wonder whats become of him

Oh my God... Well that's scary... Except I don't think I am... I guess it can get pretty bad. But do you know if the drugs are what caused him to crack, or was he already like that before?

I mean a lotta bipolar and manic depression, and a distant cousin who's schizophrenic...

I mean a lotta bipolar and manic depression, and a distant cousin who's schizophrenic...i mean he's a normal kid or well sorta normal when he takes his medication. i and alot of kids honestly didn't know about his condition until his first disapearance to the pysch ward. The hallucinogens caused a pyschotic episode or snap that lasted way long after a while he'd come back to school and be a normal kid again. It just sounds like it wouldnt be any fun to me

also for me personally shrooms effect me very emotionally. lots of ups and downs on my trips sometimes i'll start to tear up but for no reason i just start leaking tears everywhere. so imo shrooms + depression and or bipolar = not a good idea

if your not sure if you have a problem but reallly really want to do shrooms and nothings going to stop you i offer this advice: start out with a low dose 1 gram and them move up and make sure you have someone close trustworthy and big/strong enough to pyschically over power you incase things do go wrong

Wait, so, he was normal. Then he took the drugs, and they made him snap, so he went to a psych ward? Or was he schizophrenic before, the drugs made him even worse, and then he went to the psych ward?

Nah, I'm not bipolar or a manic depressive, I don't think I have a lotta trouble there.

There's a heck of a lot that would stop, I'd certainly like to try them though....

Thanks for your feedback man

Eat the shrooms. Have a good time :) Don't let it scare you and more or less gain from it.

Wow. Did you just attempt to diagnose someone and then tell them to go and see a psychiatrist? You're a smart one.

He didn't say that he had schizophrenia either. He said he had "schizophrenic tendencies". Guess what, that symptom alone describes most disorders on Axis II (specifically Cluster A) in the DSM-IV(assuming you believe in Nominative Diagnostics).

Sure, if serious mental illness is your goal, go ahead, use psychedelics. Their is a BIG reason you shouldn't, and obviously you've read so.

God damn it. Every little teenager thinks they are fucking "different" and "mysterious". Then that combines with all the fucking television and fantasy novels they read to cause them to have forced mental episodes and placebo like signs of schizophrenia. Stop it with this Russell Crowe/John Nash bullshit.

Where'd you hear this? Do you mean like, as a trigger, or the drugs alone causes the MI?

Psych is my major and I say look on pubmed for clinical studies.
Drugs that deal with dopamine are pretty bad if you're schizophrenic(Dopamine Hypothesis). Serotonin is sort of mixed.

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you and have you been to a doctor about your "schizophrenic tendencies"?

Oh hey, alright!

Okay... Hm. Does shrooms deal with dopamine? I've smoked pot before, I think that has dopamine, and nothing really bad came of that other then I got even more insomnia for a while...

I'm 16. Nah, I haven't. I have insomnia, so I go through these phases really fast. So sometimes they'll be at the back of my head, and I'll have a little trouble with it, and other times they'll be completely gone. I guess there is the large chance that I'm just making them up cause I'm panicking, but I don't know...

Then take shrooms. My grandmother was schizophrenic and my whole family is full of depression. The truth is if you're schizophrenic it's going to express itself eventually. Shrooms just might make it occur a little sooner. I say you're probably fine, the probability of anything bad happening is tiny. You're a million times more likely to crash and die every time you get in a car then you are to have a psychotic break on hallucinogens.

Honestly weed is bad for schizophrenia too (it increases the chances of developing it by 1000 percent if I recall,) and you seem to do fine when you smoke. If you worry too much about this you'll end up having a bad trip or convincing yourself you're going crazy. Just have a fun trip and take life as it comes.

Thanks man, that helps a lot, it's really reassuring... I'm still not totally sure, but this does help, :)

From my experiences, all forms of diagnosed mental illness and heavy drug use in general do not correspond very well together. It can be the result of any drug's direct effect on the brain's chemistry(both short term and long term), or the potential lifestyle and situations drugs can often put people in that could possibly have a negative effect on somebody "vulnerable", for lack of a better word.

Obviously it varies heavily from person to person, but moderating your usage, knowing your limits, and keeping your head screwed on is all you can really do.
