Default Wireless Issue...

I recently had my laptop crash and decided to finally toss windows aside and install the copy of Fedora Core 6 I had kicking around. Almost everything has been running perfectly since, however I'm having an issue with my wireless internet. The laptop, a Gateway something or other (it was a gift, I can find the documentation if necessary), has two networking options built-in. An ethernet port and a wireless card. Both were detected by Fedora. However, both were also detected AS ETHERNET ports. Thus, when trying to connect the wireless, I receive an error, suggesting an unconnected ethernet cable. I have had no luck in changing the hardware "type" to wireless, rather than ethernet.

Suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks,
A&E.

Upgrade to fedora 8 and then see if the problem still exists.

I upgraded to Fedora 8. The wireless card is now recognized as a wireless card rather than an ethernet, however it still refuses to connect to my wireless network. I am trying to start the connection using the network device manager. Perhaps there is something I am missing here, but I find myself quite perplexed.

You may need to configure the card for your network (essid, WEP/WPA key, etc).

You may also need to obtain drivers for the card. The best way to do this is to search on the distributions documentation for the card chipset (not model or vendor!) and see where to obtain the drivers.

Generally if you can see the card, you have drivers for it. However, some drivers may recognize cards and not allow them to connect.

If you cannot find any documentation on your card, post the chipset here, as well as in a question thread on the Fedora forums. You also might want to try the Fedora IRC channel.

You can find the chipset of the card by using the lspci utility (if the card is PCI or MiniPCI) or lsusb utility (if the card is USB).
