Better Living Through Chemistry Discussions of any and all sorts of mind-warping chemicals, pills, booze, mind machines, trippy stuff, current street prices, importing pharmaceuticals, smart drugs, nutrients, herbs, and altered states. Default Using wellbutrin xl to stop smoking

Would it be safe to fuck around with this antidepressant at age 17 to quit smoking. I saw some pamphlets claiming it's alternative to nicotine gum or patches. It just so happens my mom was prescribed it when she got in a car accident (long story booze and jumping out of a moving vehicle on the highway) and its just laying around. I'm getting awfully sick of being out of shape and wondered if this would work without completely ruining my mind

I assume you mean smoking cigarettes?

Anti-depressants alter your brain chemistry to allow for more absorption of norepinephrine and dopamine, and wellbutrin also acts to block absorption of nicotine in your brain. If you really want to take the risks involved then I suppose it could work.

Just a warning though, you will still have withdrawl symptoms, it's just that smoking won't do anything for you. I'd say you would be better off trying to go cold turkey, or using nicotine replacement products.

I'm fine with cold turkey but alittle aid would help. I just dont have it in me to unleash a drug that alters with my serotonin and dopamine levels just so i can get off easy with quitting cigarettes. I just was hoping there was a golden ticket with this shit

i say dont take anti-depressants unless they are prescribed to you because if you get physically dependent on it (not like you abuse it, but youll have withdrawal symptoms coming off it) you cant go to the doctor and ask for more to get yourself off them

oh and wellbutrin alters norepinephrine and especially dopamine levels, not serotonin, it aint no SNDRI.

ive heard of people getting ativan (lorazepam) for anxiety caused by quitting weed. Just don tell your doctor you have an addiction problem, tell him you were using the weed to manage your anxiety. he will give u ssri's and some crap first, but just keep saing they dont work (if they do, than by all measn keep using them), but you could get ativan if you tried. maybe something stronger if you get panic attacks.
