Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
I don't have that great understanding of this and I'm wondering if you guys could help me out...
Basically, I read that the more one drives while high, the better they get at it, the safer it is. So people have to re-learn day-to-day activities, for them to seem normal while high. Is this true?
For instance, I used to socially smoke pot but now I only really do it at night before bed. In this way, I am not practicing speaking with anybody or regulating self-conscious activities that'd I'd need to mask being high around my parents (eg. body language, holding my eyes in a sleepy "high" look, and talking without going on random tangents). Is this the reason why when I socially smoke now it's really ackward, because I associate a more introspective/self-conscious state of mind (as I do before I sleep, reflecting on my day etc..) than a social, I-can-talk state of mind because it's very ackward now socially smoking and even talking while I'm high, it seems like I have to manually determine my state of mind, my body language, it's like I can't respond or react to anything I have to bring it out of my 'haze'. Would a "cure" for this to just basically be constantly high for a week?
Also, does anyone know if I learn a lot before I go to bed (do my HW/read), and then I smoke, will my subconscious not process the memories as well while I sleep because I smoked?
Finally, concerning learning, is it possible to learn (not just mental, social & physical skills too) just as good as when one is sober?
I've tried to answer these questions through research but there is so much contradictory bullshit and 'studies' that I think subjective experience would really reveal more than what I've read.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
I'll admit, I didn't read the whole post. But my experience is - if you're attempting to learn, don't get intoxicated. If you're getting intoxicated, don't attempt to learn. They just don't mix. And it's too important to fuck around with.
This, however, is only my personal experience. I like to get fucked up as much as the next guy in BLTC, but if whatever you are learning is important, the two have to stay separate.

I know exactly what you mean by this and I have experienced the same awkwardness. The more often you smoke the more normal it feels to be stoned. Simple as that.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
i actually learn alot better high. really you dont have to re-learn anything, shit i know someone i wouldnt trust behind a wheel unless they were high.
i personally do alot of things alot better high, i have a much more concentration instead of wondering off( ADD possibly?) and ive had SO much better grades BEFORE I sobered up
but i smoked up pretty much everyday so yea...you get used to it.
if you smoke alone alot, well obviously it will become awkward to be talking to people, and shit thats how i was, but just start getting high with people more often, or talk to people high and you'll learn how to handle yourself

Really? Thats odd. Is he an aggressive person when hes not high?
My driving is exactly the same, other then I miss turns sometimes. It definitely impairs my learning abilities. I can still learn when I pay attention, but I space off a lot. People talk to me sometimes, and I nod my head, but all I dont hear a damn thing they say. Like Im on auto-pilot.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
I can learn but it seems to be subconscious. I won't be able to repeat facts but I'll be able to perform a given procedure or give you the general idea of the text (without going into details). Later when I'm not stoned I'll remember seemingly random stuff I learned while I was high and forgot about. So I guess it all gets filed away but when I'm high the secretary in my brain does away with order and uses the pile system.
Edit: Oh and if I drive stoned I'll feel like I'm driving like shit when I'm not. It makes me too paranoid about everything associated with driving. I tend to stay away from driving while high.

The more you do something whilst high, the better at it you'll become. Like anything else. At first you'll be worse at something than if you tried it sober, but you'll get it over time. The best way to do it is to learn before you get high, then use your new state to look at the situation in a different way.
For instance, I used to socially smoke pot but now I only really do it at night before bed.
I used to do that, but now I'm trying to bond with my dreams, and marijuana was holding me back.
In this way, I am not practicing speaking with anybody or regulating self-conscious activities that'd I'd need to mask being high around my parents (eg. body language, holding my eyes in a sleepy "high" look, and talking without going on random tangents). Yep, thats why pretty much. I think esoteric smoking is much better than exoteric smoking.
Would a "cure" for this to just basically be constantly high for a week?
I suppose so, but your high wont be as special as it is now.
Also, does anyone know if I learn a lot before I go to bed (do my HW/read), and then I smoke, will my subconscious not process the memories as well while I sleep because I smoked?
Works fine for me.
Finally, concerning learning, is it possible to learn (not just mental, social & physical skills too) just as good as when one is sober?
What do you mean by just as good? It won't be exactly the same, but it can still be a useful experience, with a twist.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
I used to go to History class every day in grade 10 high as hell. I didn't learn shit. Looking back on it (this was just last year) I can't even remember what topics we learned about. I barely passed the exam.
A little high is fine though, for example I went to Art moderately high and did fine. I guess their way different subjects though.
It's probably different from person to person, as we all learn in different.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
I know what you mean by "auto-pilot".....I just look like a deer in the headlights when peeps talk at me while im high. As far as learning is concerned, I used to smoke in college before all my classes and i completely fucked that up because i was just too lazy, didnt care, and i just could not remember anything they talked about.....but then again it was a fucking mission to just PAY attention.
I know marijuana affects my concentration, it affects everyones. Here is a GREAT example.....I play football....flag football... When im sober i catch every pass that even touches my hands because of my ability to concentrate on the ball. When im high...the ball is coming....and i lapse a lot in my concentration. I usually drop a couple passes while high.
but i can drive fine on anything but alcy.

Ok I kind of have the same shit going on, Basically I get really high at night, in the morning before school, during the day, all the time, but my night time smoke is the most special. I see a bunch of shit that I don't remember until like mid-day the next day. Definitely not a good idea to study blazed, but I find I crank out my best essays when I'm high, but I've come down from the intense first 30 minutes.
All in all though, I've smoked all but two or three days before school since after Xmas break. In that quarter I raised my average from a 85 to an 89, but that doesn't mean I learn anymore. School is basically a game to me now, I can appreciate doing well on shit, I do all my homework in the afternoon so I can smoke and chill at night, and I never study for tests. Idk why, but the less I comprehend everything the better I can bullshit assignments, get things done because I don't know how to do them/don't check them, cheat occasionally and be generally more efficient and resourceful. It always comes down to me pulling a cat out of a hat on the test with some highly, highly archived info. it's one way to live. Cheese.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
Holy shit, you're really smart OP.
I had a vape last year and smoked it every night before I fell asleep, I didn't have to talk to anyone, I didn't have to worry about anything, I could just kick back, spin some vinyl and fall asleep. Long story short, I got rid of the vape and smoked a couple bowls out of a bong at this party thinking my tolerance was high enough that I would be fine and just be able to kick back and mack on the honies; I was so wrong. All I wanted to do was chill out and eat because I realized I couldn't carry on a conversation without spacing out or making no sense at all.
Thankfully, I realized I had to get high and be personable before I could even think about getting high at school and trying to learn.
Anyway, kind of just lost my point, but theres some pretty crazy psychological shit in there.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
Your body learns through experience. If you get high, and talk a lot, then your body will associate being high with talking. If you get high, raid the kitchen, and fall asleep, then that's what will become normal everytime you smoke. The more you do these things, the more it becomes muscle memory. You could even try smoking placebo weed and the same thing theoretically will happen.
If you smoke weed almost every waking hour of each day, then your body will get confused when it's not high. It adapts. So yes, you can learn much better while high if that's what you always do.
At least, that's my pseudo-science understanding of how we adapt to psychological changes.

Re: Learning While High Vs Learning While Sober
I never smoke weed before lectures in a day but as soon as I get back I start smoking. I actually make assignment work a smoking session in itself getting stoned with my mate working on our assignments together and taking turns working and hitting the bong! We both find that being stoned helps us concentrate on our work and find it easier to think clearly and flow. I also draw a lot when stoned and find things I can see things better in perspective they fit into place a lot easier, colours are more vibrant and easier to place and shade and the pen flows straighter and smoother.
All of the assignments iv done whilst stoned as well as drawings are a hell of a lot better than those when not stoned. I tend to go into detail a lot more when stoned and do a lot more work.
I would post a few examples if anyone wanted!

I'm really familiar with the auto pilot shit. It's how I usually end up making it through most of my day. I don't know how related it is to weed smoking, though. I've always sort of been like that. Or at least, I've always had my head in the clouds, and came off as kind of spacey or really self-contained as a kid. I'm pretty used to unconsciously tuning people out.
I don't know if it's just because I'm a pretty good learner in general, but I find weed only noticably compromises my cognitive abilities or work ethic when I've been doing it way too much... like 8 times in a day, or something ridiculous and unnecessary. At this stage it usually amounts to a sort of cognitive fog, and I do often feel more apathetic. I'm also a bit more out of tune with my surroundings, than normal. But even then, I tend to be pretty good at concentration, so as far as attending lectures and such goes, I'm still pretty good. Granted I don't go to lectures high, as it's somewhat of a waste.

High scores != Good grades.
I've always seen that as a pun. Yeah, it's taken as verbatim in the movie, but it's a fucking comedy.
