Default Drugs Altering Your Personality

Just wondering do you think drugs have altered your personality for the better or worse? In my experience Ecstasy changed me completely for the better. Before using it I was shy, introverted, and pessimistic. Now even when I'm not on it I'm extroverted, more confident, and have a better view on life in general. My friend also used to be a very angry person and always got into fights and suspended from school before he started smoking. Weed has made him a more controlled mellow person. So share your experiences.

I would argue that all drugs alter your personality. Even if it's simply opening your mind to that particular drug; whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is subjective. If you try something, there'll always be another occasion when you might do it again; if you never try somthing, then... err.. you'll never try it :S.

MDMA changed me: it made me more comfortable with people; I discussed things I otherwise wouldn't have while taking it for the first, second, and third times. The others (who were also on it) listened and gave me support. The next day I felt genuinly closer to them.

Coke alters your personality. It turns you into a lying, twitchy, and aggressive person. I definitly think coke changes you for the worse if you use it too much. I've used it, but not regularly. I know others who have (and do) and they've changed a lot.

Cannabis, that which I use daily, doesn't really change me. I still get up in the morning, work hard at uni, and maintain healthy relationships. Beyoned being more open minded to cannabis and its effects, I don't think it really alters my personality. That might not be the same for others, though. Some people take it the wrong way...

That's just three of the big ones. I guess that whether a drug effects you negatively or not is all down to how much you let it dominate your life.

I can see how each individual substance affects my personality. And one thing i notice is that MODERATION IS KEY.

Most of the time i smoke way too much weed and i feel sluggish....because thats how much i need to get to the level i like.

but if i just smoke sparsely i achieve a high to the point of feeling ultimately confused and i wonder why i dont notice the confusion/haze when i smoke more weed. This is usually when I decide that I need to cut back or quit smoking. then the whole cycle repeats again and again because this place is dull, boring, and full of empty potential.

Drugs didn't alter my personality, I had the ability to alter my personality while thinking from different perspectives from said drugs.

Except for DXM and Adderall. Those made me boring and unable to think very clearly, let alone feel like I had anything to say.

LSD, MDMA, Psilocybin, DMT and other Research Chemicals, Ketamine, Nitrous and Marijuana have allowed me to alter my perception to the point of seeing the flaws in my personality and being able to alter them while finger fucking my subconscious and my cosmic consciousness if you believe there to be one.

Opiates, Meth and other Uppers, Alcohol and Cocaine all made me drop my personal inhibitions (for better or for worse) and before I developed a better set of personal values, they made me act like an extremely extroverted, overly confident fool.

After I did enough self-work through psychedelic use I don't change on or due to any substance. I always am having fun.

Except Pot, pot makes me lazy. Can't get around that one.

Default Re: Drugs Altering Your Personality

i tried mdma for the first time yesterday and i feel that that and mushrooms have been the most eyeopening experiences i've had. both of these were with very close friends whom i felt close with to begin with. while the mushrooms opened my mind, the mdma left me with a completely new and honest outlook on life. i was surprised to have absolutely zero negative comedown and instead have just felt better every second of the past two days. i can feel my thoughts vividly and clearly. i'm already feeling more sociable and loving towards everyone around me and i generally feel better than i have in a very long time. 1 early on in the day and one in the evening, which was a diminished effect but still certainly noticeable and enhanced with some nice herb of which i hadn't smoked in about a week.

i did mushrooms with the same friends plus one more, just 1/8th but i certainly had somewhat of an "ego death." i'm not sure my mdma experience would have been as profound if i hadn't experienced the mushrooms first.

my first experience with lsd was amazing, again with some old friends including a bunch of people i was really missing from home but i didn't feel like my mind had been blown or anything. my second forced me into dealing with some personal issues that i was hiding from myself. it was my second experience with any kind of psychedelic, both time at that point having been acid. again, i couldn't say if my other experiences would have been as eyeopening if i hadn't been forced into the self exploration i had experienced with that trip.

i used to smoke cannabis every day, and a fair amount of it. i started feeling a little burnt lately, so i cut back and now only smoke when i really feel like it. my thoughts became cloudy and i was getting so used to the effects that it became the norm. as much fun as it was at the time, i wholeheartedly agree that moderation is the key with pot as it is with everything. sometimes including moderation itself.

i never really abused alcohol though one of my best friends (and probably the sharpest and brightest guy i've ever met) jumped into it with two feet and now drinks more on a daily basis that i do on a good weekend of drinking. he handles it pretty well but it's clear that his memory is impaired and getting worse, which hurts me a lot to see. i love a nice cold beer with a meal or a glass of wine, and even getting pretty drunk on a weekend or even sometimes on a school night (woo college!), i just have no desire to drink all the time.

basically, i like drugs.

GBT4Chan

And drugs have generally changed my personality for the better. Since starting to use MDMA and LSD I have become a much more talkative and social person, where before I was very shy around new people and didn't talk too much unless it was with people I knew well.

Drugs in general change people for the worst. Most people here dont want to hear that, but its true. Just have to keep moderation. Once you lose that it all goes downhill. The people around you will usually notice a change more then you.

Im not saying that mushrooms or rolls or whatever cant be a great learning expereince. I decided to quit doing painkillers when I was rolling on some molly's. The reason I decided to do that, is because I was rolling and it helped me realise how much they were affecting my life.

Most of the people I hung out with in highschool are dead to me. Its because their addicts, and they put drugs first in line in their lives. Soon a lot of you will probably see the same things going on around you.

If your like getting fucked up, MODERATION. You dont want to become a statistic.

They are words. Take it however you take it.

I agree with you and agree with what you're saying, it's just everybody else is ignoring you, so you might actually want to explain a little more in depth.

If they would rather ignore my advice and live a fantasy where they are willing slaves to material, it makes no difference to me.

But why not. Another quote:

"Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them."

This is a way of saying that you don't have to suffer, ever. It is another way of saying I may not be able to control the rest of reality, but I can control how I react to it. Even if I was a crippled slave, I could still be content and happy.

This can also relate to drugs. Drugs don't cause your personality to change, you do. You may be unable to change the effect of a drug, but you are in complete control over how you react to it (No, not like a bad reaction or overdose, I mean how you react to the situation. How you act. How you feel about it.).

You could blame drugs for turning you into an asshole, just like I could feel miserable all the time for being a crippled slave. But I also could choose to be happy. And any of you could also choose to not be assholes. And its the exact same thing with positive situations, too.

"If, therefore, any be unhappy, let him remember that he is unhappy by reason of himself alone."

The problem with this theory is that the mind is just as dependent on the physical form as the physical form is dependent on the psychological. In other words, yes the mind can control your state, just as physical drugs can control your state. If you're lacking the proper physical nutrients and chemicals for a happy state, it can be extremely difficult to "will" it into existence by using mind power alone. It's symbiotic.

Some people are born without the part of the brain that allow for natural coping mechanisms, all the wishful thinking in the world will not make life easy for them. Blind people cannot use the power of their mind to see again, let's not forget the importance of the physical realm.

edit: so I guess what I'm saying is that, yes, drugs can change who you are. It is not always your own will or your own actions. There is a very important physical factor.

They've probably changed me, but I dunno. I thought about drugs a lot more after I started using them, other than that, not sure. After an intense salvia trip I'll seem different, like an important life altering event type shit, but that feeling fades and I dunno if it affects me in the long run.

I agree. I am not saying something contrary to that.

What I am saying, if applied to the blind man, is not that he can will himself to see. But that he can allow himself to be happy. To live just as well as any man.

Perhaps drug use has made you irritable, paranoid, arrogant, or a crook, or added some other horrible feelings to your life that you feel you must act on. That would be the effect. But you do not have to let it affect you. You can still try to be nice. You can try not to steal, or be a dick or whatever. You do not have to be this horrible drug creature. Who 'you' are is not set in stone. Hell, some people can't even help it. Thats called dissociative identity disorder.

On the flip side, perhaps drug use has made you charming, outgoing, loving of everything, or a stranger-hugger, or added some other wonderful feelings to your life that you feel you must act on. But you could have done that all on your own.

I think thats pretty close.

They may 'usher' you towards 'better' characteristics, but I believe you always had the option of doing it yourself. There was nothing keeping the door locked, but yourself. You were the lock. And you never had to be.

I also believe that they may also 'usher' you towards less desirable characteristics, but you always had the option of going there yourself. And you have the option of not going there, as well. You may feel a need to be grumpy and snap at people, just as a crippled slave may feel miserable. But you have the option of ignoring that and doing what you feel would be better, just as the slave can choose to be happy anyways.

So your basically saying that you can be optimistic about any situation drugs, no drugs, no eyes, or even no freedom? Am I close? If so I would agree with you in saying you have the choice between the angry addict and the peaceful stoner, and choosing a positive view on life.

Close, yes.

Optimism (expecting better) and pessimism (expecting worse) are masturbation.

I believe its better to accept the things you cannot change, and realize which things you can change: how you react to the those things you cannot change. No matter the situation, you do not have to suffer. You do not have to be affected. You can be happy. You have choice. You already are free.

btw you should be a psychiatrist

No, I shouldn't. And I don't believe anyone should allow themselves to believe anyone else really has that authority over them.

Hmm, and in response to the OT (Original Topic) ... yes, certainly drugs can alter you mindset / perception in terms of how you perceive things and thus affect your personality

Whether or not the change is for the better or worse is solely the dependent on the individual and how he/she approaches the situation.
