Quitting
This is for those of you who are incredibly sick and tired of being a junkie/crackhead/drunk/etc.
If you are coming off of alcohol or benzos, do so in a detox center or a hospital - the withdrawals are potentially lethal.
Days 1-7 - Drink lots of water, eat lots of ice cream, smoke lots of cigarettes, call non-using friends/family, stay occupied with anything you can.
Days 8-Rest of life:
1. Quit lying to your self. Getting fucked up won't fix a single problem. There is no problem in life that drugs can not make worse.
2. You are the cause of your problems.
3. Wake the fuck up, try telling the truth.
4. Do something that doesn't fuck people over.
5. Continue to talk to your family and clean friends.
6. Learn to enjoy the sunlight (Chances are you'll need to see light every now and then as you start to grow up and take on responsibilities)
7. Pray if you pray (or do it just to help focus your thoughts)
8. Meditate
9. If this doesn't work, get your ass into a support/recovery group like one of the _________ Anonymous groups. There're groups for coke/crack, various narcotics, alcoholics, gamblers, etc.
10. Once you've recovered, help any and all addicts that wish to recover do so. (Do not give them money or a place to stay, most of them will lie about wanting to sober up so they can rob your medicine cabinet, etc.)

Re: Quitting
Getting fucked up makes you happy.
happiness is good for your mental health.
therefore getting fucked up is good
:D
..from a non-addict point of view anyway.
But anyway, your post sounds pretty solid.

11. Workout, and run, all the time, until you can't anymore because you've maxed your body out. Then eat great food, grow stronger, and do it all again.

Re: Quitting
People who don't know anything about addiction write stuff like this and think its helpful. Or new.
People use drugs for a lot of different reasons. Addicts become addicts for a variety of reasons.
I'm a former Heroin addict. I wasn't shooting dope to hide/run from/mask problems. I've always used drugs to make life more enjoyable. Heroin makes life infinitely more enjoyable. I stopped using because I couldn't afford to keep up a habit and was not satisfied with going sick 1 or 2 days to save up enough money to get enough dope for 1 day. Sure, withdrawal was horrible. So was having to 'hide' my use from bias, ignorant preachy assholes like you.
Some people use drugs to kill emotional pain. I don't think any less of anyone for it. You shouldn't either. Mind your own fucking business, people can live the way they want to.

Re: Quitting
I agree with Tchort. It sounds like you've never been addicted to anything in your life.
Your mind doesn't tell you, "Hey, I should call some people who don't do what I'm trying to quit." It says...."Fucking get some NOW....no matter fucking WHAT you thought before...I am your best friend, your lover, your god, everything to you."
I call BS.

Re: Quitting
You are right Tchort, people can live how they want, but when fucking crackheads start infringing on MY fucking rights, by stealing from me in what ever manner, or trying to accost me at a god damn ATM (that's happened TWICE now), I say fuck that shit. And the thing is, with hardcore addiction, people will do ANYTHING to feed it, which Hexadecimal KNOWS as per the suggestion of NOT lying and NOT fucking someone over for once.
I think it is you, and krees that have no fucking clue about real addiction and the social, and personal problems it can cause, as well as the effects on the addicts family and friends.
If you have not experienced true addiction and withdrawal, have never dealt with it, or are not going through it right now, well then anything you have to say on the subject is pretty fucking useless huh?
Either that, or you are drug addicts still in denial, and offended that someone doesn't want to waste their lives in the same way you are.
Hexadecimal, I don't know if you are coming off drugs, or planning on it, or have, but that is some good advice and I congratulate you for your efforts in trying to be a better person.
But remember, it's not about abstinence, it's about responsible use. For some people that IS abstinence, but many others can do perfectly fine having one or two drinks, even after having had a serious problem with alcohol, or any drug for that matter.
Humans change and grow, and for a person to live their life, and never grow past the desire for a single chemical is just fucking pathetic.

Re: Quitting
Just for the record, I'm an alcoholic and drug addict. I drank daily for five years, did coke every opportunity I had the money for it, choked down benzos like they were pez, had my way with opiates, and rolled my head to the moon. I've done my share of hallucinogens, from shrooms, to acid, to DMT, to 5-meo-DMT, 2ce, and more.
I was a junkie to the max. I was homeless off and on for 3 years. The last time I was homeless, I decided I needed to end this shit once and for all. Life with or without drugs was worthless - I needed something different. And Krees, you describe the underlying mindset to addiction pretty damn well. I do know what it's like; I know that my mind lied to me constantly...it would find any justification possible to excuse another high.
You want to really know how I quit using drugs? I started praying because people sure as fuck couldn't help me. I was forcing myself to hang out with straight-edgers (even though I hated them), started meditating to the best of my junked out ability, and reading tons of books.
When I found that this wasn't enough, I started going to 'meetings'...I'm guessing many of you have gone to these meetings on court orders, so you know what I'm talking about. In there, I went ahead and started working their 'program', and I haven't had a drink or a drug since.
And stupid noob, I know that there are many out there who are heavy drug/drink users that can return to drinking/using in moderation. I'm not one of them, though. I tried it after the first time I sobered up because I wasn't sure if I was a real alcoholic/addict. I have no doubt in my mind today, though. (The distinguishing factor between an alcoholic/addict and someone that is simply physically and psychologically dependent on a drug is that the craving is permanent in an alcoholic/addict. Any reintroduction of the chemical into the body will bring on the craving, followed then by the pattern of unstoppable usage.)

Re: Quitting

This, I'm afraid.
I'm sure the post was well-intentioned, but when I see "do something that doesn't fuck people over," my first thought is "get high" - not even because I get high all that much anymore, but simply because it really does fit in with most of Hex's descriptions of what s/he thinks "the opposite of drug use" really is.
I've known hardcore heroin junkies that were the kindest, most decent, harmless people one will ever meet. I've known hxe sxe shitbags for whom a meth/crack/whatever-addicted lifestyle would just give them an excuse, and a thin one at that. Well-intentioned... but advice cannot be applicable until it is based in the real experience of the reciever - and what makes great anti-drug propoganda often makes a shitty model as far as trying to connect it to the real world.
News flash : drugs don't make people shady, shady people blame shit on drugs. 'n just to expand on that theme - some of those shady people happen to be in office, funding ONDCP budgets so they can try to inflate the world's largest prison population for sub-minimum-wage labor for their companies and first dibs at "snowflaked" consumer goods.
Sorry. Nice thought, bad TV backing.

Re: Quitting

I try to deny this to myself daily, because my mother and brother are those pieces of shit using drugs as a thinly veiled excuse for being said pieces of shit. Honestly, it's just easier for me to blame the drugs. It allows me to keep that pristine mental image of my mother, and it lets me keep caring about her. Whenever THAT type of mindset kicks in for me though, I'd rather not have anything to do with either of them.
Yes, I live in denial, but I can admit it.

JoePedo, you can discount my suggestions all you want, but they sobered me up. I'm not here with any motives. This is take it or leave it information. If you want to sober up badly enough to try this shit, despite the naysayers who think it's some impossible feat; or the ignorant who think sitting around talking nice somehow makes a heroin addict decent (nevermind that many would sell their daughter's pussy for a fix if they didn't have the means to pay for it themselves)...you can think this shit is propoganda, feel free to. Feel free to think it won't work, or can't work, because it sounds too simple. Quitting is as simple as this: Find something to believe in, and put every last fucking ounce of your being into it. If anything in your past prevents you from doing this, find those you have harmed and set things right on YOUR side of the deal without expecting forgiveness or anything else. Let go of your expectations of other people and focus on what YOU can do to better your life...because nobody is going to give you a break when all your problems are of your making.

Re: Quitting
A couple good sessions of MDMA-induced psychotherapy followed up by an LSD psychotherapy session should cure up the addiction problems. Except then they'll have connections to go seek out those drugs, and likely end up back on the drugs they were originally addicted to from still being involved in the illicit drug trade.
We need to end this fucking War on Drugs.

Agreed; rehab centers, incarceration, and their kind do absolutely nothing to help someone out unless they want to quit...and putting them in a jail really just teaches them how to be better criminals up until/if they reach the point where they genuinely want a different life style.

rehab centers work for alot of people who are serious. not by themselves tho, and not state funded centers or court mandated shit. incarceration does absolutely nothing your right, when i was locked up all i could think about was getting high and i was making all sorts of new hookups and learning new shit.

Jail only makes you a smarter drug user and possibly dealer with the connections you get.
Prison, on the other hand, will give you a PhD in Street Pharmacy...and a torn sphincter!

Re: Quitting
Man, reading this made me depressed.
It's strange, I seem to be able to ignore the physical addiction, but then the psychological addiction gets me.
4-6mg xanax daily is what I'm prescribed. I tend to overdo it though when I feel down, I just get really.. depressed, and want to black out for a while.
So I've run short before, had a seizure, and gotten to the point where I felt completely fine physically. Maybe takes 2ish weeks. Then the day comes that I can get my refill. Without even really thinking about it, I've filled it and have popped a few.
Problem seems to be that I have no desire to quit.
