Talking Yay! I'm a Linux Nerd Now! (sorta...)

So after almost giving up b/c I don't know shit about programing (besides using fdisk when reinstalling Win98) and getting pissed b/c I couldn't find a detailed enough manual that covered everything starting with partitioning, I finally found one and got Ubuntu installed!

I wasn't wanting to start off w/ Ubuntu b/c it seemed like a lot of people didn't recommend it to people new to Linux, but it was the only one that my comp could run (old 500MHz AMD). I was wanting to try PClinuxOS but my cpu couldn't support the kernel or something, or Linux Mint but the only place I can find to get it is through torrents but my uni blocks p2p.

The manual that came with it actually ended up being sufficiently detailed and was just what I had been trying to find all along.

I now have Ubuntu dual booting with Win98. I'm going to be changing it to just Ubuntu soon, I was just wanting to see how it was with dual boot. Will Ubuntu run faster when it's the only OS? It seems pretty slow now.

Ubuntu is actually the best way to start with linux.

You can move up to debian once youre comfortable, its what ubuntu was based on and is much more powerful.

500MHz won't be too fast with anything. Also, the default ubuntu GUI is a bit bloated. You might want to try Fluxbuntu, which is Ubuntu with the Fluxbox desktop manager.

i may suggest jumping in w/ Debian, its light and should run faster. it might take a little getting used to, but you will learn much more.

If you want to stay with Ubuntu go to System>Preferences>Sessions and uncheck anything you don't use. These are items that are running in the background and you may not need.
